1376. Addie Amelia Carpenter

Information received from descendants of Addie's father, indicated Addy (their spelling) was a twin to Addie C. Carpenter.

Addie's record is identical to her husband's documentation.

MARRIAGE.  Allegan County Clerk, Allegan., MI  Vol. 6, page 99 # 1472   Clifton A. Ryder, age 23, of Chicago, IL, b. Penn. married Addie A. Carpenter, age 20, of Plainwell, MI, b. 1910 U. S. Census, Easton Twp., Ionia  Vol 34, Ed. 14, no sheet or house number because this was the Michigan Reformatory and Clifton A. Ryder age 42, md. 18 yrs., b. Penn, father: b. NY, mother: b. NY was a prisoner.  There was some numbers, not sure what they  meant. 15-5-9-7or 8.  He was #7901 on the page. The warden or guard was Louis Carl Ruthmiller.

1920 U. S. Census we found two possibilities.  I believe it is the first one because he gives his birth place as Penn.  However, even though the census were taken days apart, it is possible they are the same family even though there are a few descrepancies. His age should only be 50 or 51 if birth month and year was correct on the 1900 census. Lansing City, Ingrahm Co., MI. Soundex R-360 Vol 38, Ed. 93, Page 1 Line 95. Census taken: 29 Jan.. (Soundex)  A.C. Ryder,  age 53, b. Penn  father: b. NY;  mother : b. NY  Addie, wife, age 48, b. MI, parents both b. NY.  William, son, age 15, b. MI;. father b. Penn, mother, MI.   A C Ryder's occupation was a plasterer.  (If he had recently gotten out of prison, he may not have wanted to use his name, and used initials instead--backwards.  Lansing is not far from Ionia  where the prison was located.)

Second one: !1920 U. S. Census,  Otsego City, Allegan, MI.  Vol. 2, Ed. 30, Sheet 32, Line 25. Census taken 31 Jan & 2 Feb. .  Ryder, Clifton age 52, b. MI. parents both b. MI.  He is a mason by trade.  Addie, wife, age 48 b. MI, both parents b. MI. William, son, 15, b. MI. parents b. MI.  (All b. MI?)

Both of these census could be looked at again to see if it gave an occupation for Addie.  We know she was a dressmaker in 1910.

Which one is it in 1920? Or are they both the same family, taken twice? Further research is needed.

Addie’s middle name was Amelia.  Her husband’s name was alternately Archie Clifton and Clifton Archie.  He was son of Henry Nelson Ryder and Emeline Foy.

She and Clifton Ryder had a difficult marriage.  I’ve found several newspaper pieces about his being a chronic alcoholic and not able to support his family.  I took special interest because of two historic movements: the strength of the WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) and the woman suffrage movement.  I’ll attach a zip file with the newspaper pieces that tell the story.

In addition, Addie filed for divorce in Allegan county on 29 Jul 1916; the suit was dismissed 19 Jan 1918.

And despite all that, they share a stone at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan, MI.  She’s # 61723085 and he’s # 61723117.

You can request his deceased file. You'll find practical instructions at Message #2112.
