Recorded in "Rooks County Record, Friday, May 26, 1911"  She was 38 yrs, 10 months, 21 days at the time of death.  Her entire life was lived in Kansas, except one year during infancy when her parents lived at Rockwell, Iowa.  Her home was again at Oak Hill until she was 11 yrs. old, when with her parents she moved to Clay Center where she lived seven years, after which her home was at Clifton.  Here she met Mr. Andrew S. Foster and was married to him at Concordia, July 25, 1894. Clifton continued to be her home until March 19, 1900, . . . then to Stockton, Kansas for the past 11 years. . . Leaves four children, S. Muriel, age 15; John B. age 9; Vivian E. age 6 and Ilah Ann, age 4 yrs. Her parents Mr. & Mrs. J. B. Allen of this city suffer very deeply the loss of their only daughter.. . .She leaves 4 brothers, Edward, Wallace, Walter and Bently all of Stockton, except Walter who lives in Downs.

Catherine May Yoder

Her obituary stated they moved to Stockton in 1902 and about a year later to Trego County where they resided until 1908, then returned to Stockton. She was 49 yr. 5 mo. 5 days.  Surviving are her son Arthur W. of San Francisco, Calif., serving in the U.S. Navy on the U. S. S. New Mexico; the daughter, Merle in the home who has been a close and constant compainion; two brothers, Elmer and Grover Yoder, two sisters, Mrs. Sylvis Byrne and Miss Mattie Yoder all having residence at Clyde.

Article about his death was in the Rooks County Record, Aug 16, 1934.  . ". . .Resident of Stockton for many years . . .leaves widow, Mrs. Jessie Allen, he leaves five children, Mrs. Edith Rea, Mrs. Opal Hamilton, Charles, John and William.  Two of the sons, John and Charles are in the U. S. Navy were unable to attend the funeral services.  Charles who came here three weeks ago . . . returned to his ship last week.

Obituary, he was 53 yrs, 8 months, 22 days at the time of death.  Came to Stockton 32 years ago (1901) and married Miss Jessie Wentz, Nov. 10, 1910. Five children were born, Mrs. Danton Rae, Grand Island, Neb.; Charles Bentley Allen of the USS Dobbin now located at Province Town, Mass; John F. Allen, USS Texas, now located at Hampton Roads, VA; Mrs. Leon Hamilton, Stockton, and William Arthur of the home address.  Mr. Allen was engaged in the plumbing business with his father in Stockton from 1914-1918 at which time he took over the business. . .(until) Jan1934. Jessimine May Wentz

58 years, 9 months, 24 days at the time of death. Article was in the Rooks County Record, September 19, 1942.  Came to Stockton 34 yrs. ago and was in the Millinery and dress making business.  Married Bentley Renrick Allen on Nov. 10, 1910. (He died in 1934, 8 yrs. earlier.) Five children:  Mrs. Edith Louise Rea of Albuquerque, N. M.; Charles Bentley Allen, aviation pilot, U.S.Navy, at Pearl Harbor, territory of Hawaii; John Elbert Allen, Bell Gardens, Calif; Mrs. Opal Hamilton of Stockton, and William Arthur Allen, corporal in the U.S. Army, now stationed at Ft. Mason, Calif.  Surviving are two brothers, Walter Wentz, of Long View, Oregon, and William Wentz, Present address unknown.  Three nephews, one niece, four grandchildren.

We had been given birth as 1883, tombstone sadi 1882.

OBITUARY.  Coldwater Daily Reporter, Monday, July 11, 1932.  Lula Pierce Dies Today.  Lifelong resident of County Succumbs to Long Illness.  Mrs. Lula May Pierce, 50, wife of William Pierce, 191 Henry Street, and resident of Coldwater and Branch County her entire life, died at 8:45 a.m. today at Wade Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for about ten days.  Death terminated an illness of more than a year family members said.  Mrs. Pierce was born May 8, 1882, in Coldwater Twp..  She married Mr. Pierce September 24, 1899 and of this union three daughters and five sons were born.  She lived in Coldwater 30 years and in Union City a shorter time.  The daughters are Anna Gower of Milwaukee, Wis., Kathryn Brickley of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Marie Zabonick of Albion.  The sons, all of who live in Coldwater, are Ledger, Zolvey, Russell, Orville and Lewis Pierce.  Mrs. Pierce's mother, Mrs. Sadie Thayer, of Union City, also survives, as do one sister, Viola KenKnight, and a brother, Earl Carpenter, also of Union City.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. EST Wednesday from the chapel at McConkey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wm. N. Vincent, First Presbyterian pastor, officiating.  Burial will be made in Batavia Cem..

OBITUARY.  Coldwater Daily Reporter, Wednesday, July 13, 1932, p. 1.  Pierce Funeral is Held Today.  Funeral services for Mrs. Lula May Pierce, 50, lifelong Branch County resident, were held at 2 p.m today from the chapel of McConkey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wm. N. Vincent, First Presbyterian pastor, officiating.  Burial was made in Batavia Cem..  Many of Mrs. Pierce's numerous friends and acquaintenances were present at the rites.  Mrs. Pierce died Monday at Wade Memorial Hospital.  She had been ill about a year.  She was born in Coldwter Twp. May 8, 1882, married Mr. Pierce in 1899, and leaves her husband and eight children.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.  Coldwter Daily Reporter, Tuesday July 12, 1932, p. 4, Batavia News Notes.  Will Pierce and children of Coldwater have the smypathy of Batavia.  Mr. and Mrs. Pierce at one time lived in Batavia on the farm now occupied by Mrs. Mary Pifer and children, and he was a former Station schoolboy.

On June 3, 2000, a visit was made to Batabia Cem. which is located in Section 26, Batavia Twp., Branch County, Michigan.  There is a marker for Lula Mae Pierce, Mother, 1882-1932, in row 13, of the south section.  Also in this row are her husband, William E. Pierce, Father, 1871-1952; and son, Lewis R. Pierce.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. The Coldwater Republican, Friday, 17 Nov. 1893.  United in marriage in Bethel Nov. 11th by Rev. R. T. Martin, William E. Pierce of Batavia and Miss Gertrude M. Colgan of Bronson.

Marriage license was listed in "Coldwater Daily Reporter" with a date of Sept 29, 1899.  The Courior Paper p. 5.

On June 3, 2000, a visit was made to Batavia Cem. on the east side of Batavia Road in Section 26, Batavia Twp., Branch , Michigan, between M-86 and US12.  In Row 13 in the south section there is a marker which reads:  "William E. Pierce, father, 1871-1952."  In the same row are markers for Will's wife, Lula Mae Carpenter and one son, Lewis R. Pierce.  There is also an individual marker for Lucy A. Pierce, 1851-1919 plus a tall marker which says Lucy A. Pierce, 1851-1919, daughter of W. R. Card.

In 1932 Anna Gower was of Milwaukee, Wis., according to her mother's obituary.  In 1938 Anna Gower was of Union City according to her brother's, Ledger', obituary.  In 1947 Anna Snyder was living in Union City according to her brother's, Zolvy's, obituary.  In 1972 Mrs. Howard (Anna) Snyder was of Coldwater according to her brother's, Louis', obituary. In 1973, Mrs. Anna Snyder was of Coldwater according to her brother's, Orval's, obituary.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1976, p. B-1, Coldwater, Mrs. Anna G. (Pierce) Snyder, 75 of 483 Lake Drive, died Tuesday in a nursing home in Zephyrhills, Florida.  She was born in Branch County and resided in Union City until moving to Coldwater in 1946.  She was a member of Coldwater First Baptist Church and the Kinderhood OES Chaper and was a charter member of the Idlewild Extension Club.  She was the widow of Howard K. Snyder of Hollywood, Fla.; two stepgrandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Zabonick of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Kathryn Brickley of Fort Wayne, Ind.  Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Putnam Funeral Home.

OBITUARY.  Coldwater Dialy Reporter, Tuesday, Febraury 3, 1976.  Anna G. Snyder, 75, of 483 Lake Dr., Coldwater, widow of Howard K. Snyder and lifelong Branch County resident, died this morning at the Zephyr Haven nursing home in Zephyrhills, Fla., following a year's illness.  Funeral arrangements, being made by the Putnam Funeral Home, were incomplete today.  Mrs. Snyder was born Aug. 29, 1900 in Branch County, daughter of William E. and Lula (Carpenter) Pierce.  She attended school in Coldwater and lived in Union City, moving to Coldwater after marrying Mr. Snyder Sept. 21, 1946 in Angola, Ind.  She was a member of First Baptist Church, Kinderhook Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and was a charter member of the Idlewild Extension Club.  Survivors include a step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Steffey, of Coldwater Lake; a step-son, Robert Snyder of Hollywood, Fla; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Zabonick of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Kathy Brickley of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and two step-grandchildren.  Five brothers preceded her in death.

OBITUARY.  Coldwater Daily Reporter, Monday, May 7, 1973, p. 2.  Orval W. Pierce.  Jackson - Orval W. Pierce, 52, of 131 Perch Lake, Cement City, died suddenly Friday evening at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Wetherby Funeral Home in Jackson with Capt. James Robbins in charge.  Burial will be in Riverview (should be Riverside) Cemetery in Union City.  Mr. Pierce was born on Dec. 12, 1920 in Hillsdale, the son of William E. and Lulu (Carpenter) Pierce.  A veteran of World War II, Mr. Pierce was a member of the Cement City Lodge F&AM No. 435; the Jackson Chapter No. 3 RAM; and the Scottish Rite Body, Moslem Temple Shrine; and the past president of the Jackson Shrine Club.  Mr. Pierce was also a member of the board of advisors of the Salvation Army in Jackson.  Survivors include his wife, Marguerite; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Snyder of Coldwater, Mrs. Kathryn Brickley of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Mrs. Marie Zabonick of Phoenix, Ariz; and one brother, Russell of Coldwater.

OBITUARY.  Union City Register-Tribune, Oct. 22, 1957.  Succumbs at Age of 73.  Union City - Earl R. Carpenter, 73, retired farmer and resident of this area up to seven years ago, died early today at University Hospital, Ann Arbor, where he had been a patient for one week.  Mr. Carpenter was taken to Ann Arbor after suffering a head injury in a fall at the home of a son, Carl, who lives on Division St. here.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m.  Thursday at the Jenkins funeral home.  Other arrangements were incomplete at press time today.  Mr. Carpenter was born in Calhoun County on March 14, 1884, son of Robert and Sadie (Place) Carpenter.  He married Ethel A. Johnson on July 23, 1910, she survives.  After retiring from farming, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter moved to 127 West Bidwell, Battle Creek.  In recent years he has driven a truck, picking up milk from area farms.  Also surviving are:  a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Helen) Menek of Kalamazoo; three sons, Carl and Louis of Union City, and Sgt. Charles C. Carpenter of Rapid City, SD; 11 granchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Emerson KenKnight of Coldwater Twp..

Carpenter.  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Helen) Menek of Schoolcraft; a son, Charles Carpenter of Manassas Park, VA; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Arden Johnson of Union City, and sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Lila) Dulbee of Athens and Hazel H. Johnson of Chicago.  Services will be held at 11 a.m.  Friday at the Jenkins Funeral Home.

OBITUARY.  Kalamazoo gazetter, Tuesday, January 5, 1999.  Menck, Helen Margaret, Portage, MI.  Died Sunday morning January 3, 1999.  Helen was born September 28, 1914 in Union City, MI, the daughter of Earl and Ethel (Johnson) Carpenter.  A resident of Schoolcraft for 31 years, she worked as a clerk at the Schoolcraft Post Office for 13 years;  the past 5 years she has resided in Portage.  She was formerly a member of the Comstock Rebekah Lodge #441.  In 1938 she was united in marriage to C. Harold Menck, who preceded her in death in 1985; also preceding her in death were 3 brothers, Louis, Carl, & Charles Carpenter.  Surviving are two nieces whom she raised, Sue Garvey and husband, Les Minor of Schoolcraft, Waneta Menck of Kalamazoo; and many other nieces and nephews.  Services will be held 1:p.m.  Thursday at the Langeland Family Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre St. Kalamazoo.  A private interment will be held in Mt. Ever-Rest Cem..

Eliza St., Schoolcraft, Mich.  Passed away Sunday morning, Dec 1, 1985.  Mr. Menck was born August 27, 1909, in Kalamazoo, son of Charles and Cora (Delphine) [Cora's middle name was Delphine and her maiden name was Jenkins]  Menck and had been a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area, the last several years living in Schoolcraft.  He retired from Hammond Machinery Builders after 30 years of service, and was a volunteer member of the Comstock Community Center.  In 1938, he married Helen Carpenter, who survives.  Also surviving are two nieces who resided the majority of their lives with Harold and Helen, Sue Garvey of Schoolcraft and Nita Menck of Lansing; one sister, Vivian Hartman of Kalamazoo; two nephews, Vaughn and Charles Menck of Kalamazoo; several other nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester.  Services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at the Langeland Memorial Chapel, 622  S. Burdick, with Rev. Dr. Lowell S. Walsworth of Vicksburg United Methodist Church officiating.  Interment in Mt. Ever-Rest Cem..  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Schoolcraft Ambulance Service of the Comstock Community Center.  Friends may call at the chapel this evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

WEDDING.  (Paper found at Branch County Library, Coldwater - date of issue in 1908 must be re-checked)  KenKnight-Carpenter.  The home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carpenter, west of this city, was the scene of a very pretty wedding last Thursday evening, when their daughter, Miss Viola Carpenter, was united in marriage with Mr. Emerson KenKnight.  About forty relatives and near friends were in attendance to witnesses the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. F. Cookson, of this city.  A wedding supper was served, and the bridal gifts were many and beautiful.  The bride and groom are well-known and popular young people of this vicinity, and they have the best wishes of their many friends in their new relation.

KenKnight, 94, of 60 South Clay St., died Mondy afternoon at the Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility after a two month illness.  Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Gillespie Funeral Home with Father Roderic Wiltse in charge.  Burial in Riverside Cem., Union City.  Mr. KenKnight was born Dec.15, 1879, in Union Twp., Branch County, the son of Edward and Martha (Feller) KenKnight.  He married Viola Carpenter on Oct. 22, 1908, in Branch County.  A lifelong resident of Branch County, Mr. KenKnight made a living as a farmer and thresher.  Survivors include one son, Gordon of Coldwater, two granddaughters and one great-grandson.  Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Saline Observer, Thurs. July 13, 1911, told of an accident he had with his horse, and another from a hay loft a few years earlier caused sixteen fractures and was unconscious for 3 days.  The acticle said, "It will be money in Elwood's pocket if he will take the old brute (colt) into a ten-acre field, fill him with dynamite, attach a long fuse, set a match to it, then make his escape."

C. Rogers of Lodi, and Mr. William C. Burkhardt, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Burkhardt were married on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 1918.  . . .after the ceremony Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Burkhardt and Mr. & Mrs. John Finkbeiner went to the bride's parent's home for an "elaborate" supper.  Bride and groom were to reside with his parents.  (E.
