2097. Maudie M. Carpenter

1900 U. S. Census, Gun Plain Twp, Allegan, MI. Vol. 2, Ed. 10, Sheet 3 Line 87.  Maudie was 6 yrs. old, and in the home of her parents, Byron and Alice Carpenter.  She was b. Sept 1893 and is "Maudie" on this census.

MARRIAGE.  Allegan County Clerk,  Allegan., MI  Vol 7, page 222.   Harly Bender, age 23, married Maude Carpenter, age 19, Nov. 2, 1912.  Parents of Maude:  Byron Carpenter and Alice Pierce.

East Martin Cem., Martin, Allegan, MI, her tombstone is by her parents and says, "Maudie, dau of B. and A. Carpenter 1893-1915", so one cannot tell if she had been married or not as it does not give her last name. (We just found the reference to her marriage, June, 1993, see above.)  She is not in the Allegan, Barry, or Kalamazoo death records under Carpenter, and now we know why.

Bernard Byron (Bender) Carpenter who is listed as Byron and Alice Carpenter's son, was Maude's child. (Byron and Alice were Maude's parents).  Bernard Byron was born in March 1915 and Maude died in June 1915.  Her parents, Byron and Alice Carpenter  raised Bernard Byron Bender as Bernard Byron Carpenter (possibly legally adopting him), but his blood line would be Bender.  Bernard Byron will be put on the family group sheet with his real mother for the purposes of this record.

The family descendants sent this in 1993, "Maudie had one son, Bernard Byron Bender.  When Maudie died, Bernard (nick named Peely) was adopted by grandparents."

She was 21y9m1d when she died.

Marie E. Holub

Date of birth and death was from her death record.    She was 69 years old at death.

2099. Verne William Carpenter

Although Verne is listed as Verne in the census records, and his marriage record, he gave his name as LaVerne on his father Byron's death record.  Verne also named a daughter Laverna.  LaVerne may be his legal name.  This could be researched, but he obviouly went by Verne throughout his life.

MARRIAGE.  Allegan County Clerk, Allegan, MI,  Vol 10, p. 119,  Verne W. Carpenter, 25, of Martin, MI, b. Plainwell, MI, married Jessie Jordan, age 17, of Wayland, MI, b. Wayland, MI.   Married,  3 July 1923.   Parents of the groom:  Byron Carpenter & Alice Pierce.  Parents of the bride: Glen Jordan & Jane Sliter, witnesses Ada Shekil(?) of Allegan, MI, and Roberta Schaub of Allegan, MI.  Married by: ___.

Family records sent from descendants in 1993, said, "Verne William, was  born April 17, 1898 at homestead in Shelbyville, married Jessie Mildred Jordan on July 3, 1923  of this union came 11 children.  Verne & Jessie lived on the old homestead until buying Byron's home on old U.S. 131. Both Verne & Jessie worked at the State Mental Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. In the winter of 1961 they sold their home in Shelbyville to son Verne William Jr., had an auction sale and moved to Bradenton, FL for the winters. In summer they spent time with their children. Verne was a big man, with thick head of red wavy hair, a very quiet gentleman, who loved everyone.  He loved the outdoors, enjoyed fishing and hunting.  Jessie was a short and stout, a very jolly outgoing person. Verne suffered and was hospitalized for liver trouble in Nov. 1970 Bradenton, Florida.   There he died of heart failure.  His wife Jessie, sister-in-law Dorothy Witcomb and daughter Jerry Demereck were with him until his death.  His body was flown home to Michigan.  Funeral services were held at Archer-Hampel Funeral Home, Wayland and he is buried at East Martin Cem..  He was survived by many who loved him, including his wife, children, grandchildren other relatives and friends."

DEATH.  Allen County Clerk, Allegan, MI.  Death Records, show three children of Verne and Jessie, who died young: Laverna age 6y4m25d  d. 27 Apr 1933;  Betty M (Jayne on tombstome,) d. 7 July 1933, age 3y4m3d, died of poisoning from medication; James, d. 27 Apr 1947, 12y9m24d, died of a broken neck.

Another child Wlilliam was born and died same day in 1931 according to family records sent in 1993.  We did not find this in the Allegan Death Records.

East Martin Cem.  was visited May 1993.  Graves are together, with two military stones to one side of Verne (1898-1970) & Jessie (1905-1983) Carpenter, one, Bernard B. is Verne's nephew (raised by Verne's parents), the other Gerald Verne Carpenter is Verne's son.  Verne's brother Floyd is buried by these military stones too. Byron and his wife Alice, parents of Maudie, Verne, Floyd, and grandparents of Benard Byron (raised as their son), are close also.   Neither boys, Gerald Verne, or Bernard B. are in the Allegan Death Records.  We were informed that military stones were sometimes placed at the family burial site, even if the person was buried elsewhere.  Verne's daughter,  Bertha Washburn has a stone there but with no death date.  She was contacted, and was very instrumental in our receiving a lot of new information by referring our inquiry to Kathy Crow, of Climax, MI, who sent us a lot of information.

We could not find Verne's death record on either Index of Allegan or Kalamazoo Counties.  Family records confirm he died in Florida.

Jessie Mildred Jordan

In East Martin Cem., Martin, Allegan, MI.  Stone has dates 1905-1983 for Jessie.  A visit was made in  1993 and pictures were taken.

Family records sent by descendants in Dec.1993, gave information about Verne, his illness and death and said this about Jessie, "Jessie was short and stout, a very jolly out going person."  After telling about Verne's death it went on to say,  "Jessie remained in Wayland, MI to be near family and friends.  She lived for 12 years after Verne.  She remained active, traveling and visiting friends and relatives. Jessie died on Jan 11, 1983 of a massive heart attack at a Grand Rapids, MI hospital. Funeral Services were held at Arch-Hampel funeral home in Wayland, and she was laid to rest next to her husband at East Martin. Jessie was born Nov 16, 1905 to Glen and Janie Sliter Jordan. She had one brother John, and one sister Dorothy.  Glen - born April 30, 1882 to John and Marion  Denora Abbott Jordan, died April 6, 1923.  John Jordan born 1839 - died 9-27-1921,  82 yrs. old.  Married Marion Denora (Abbott), b. 1843, she died 11-15-1924, 81 yrs old.  Marion had one sister that we know of - Frances Elizabeth (Abbott) Misner, d. 9-27-1925. 'John and Marion's sons, Glen born April 30 1882 married Janie Sliter who was born Oct 7, 1882,  They had 3 children, John, Jessie and Dorothy. Glen died  April 6, 1923   Janie died May 4, 1908.  Dorothy Jordan Witcomb" The above was recorded here for those who may be researching this line.
