2247. Elaine Brownell

THIS FIRST SENTENCE IS INCORRECT, BUT LEFT HERE BECAUSE IT WAS PUBLISHED THIS WAY IN 1999,  ( before I found the letter.) Elaine is the mother of Floyd Batty of Wichita Falls, Texas in 1969 who has the Capenter/Pierce Family Bible.  INCORRECT--The pages of the family bible were sent from Mrs. Roy Batty Jr. of 3012 Cunningham, Wichita Falls, Texas 76308 in 1969.  Her name was Garvene Batty.  In a letter of April 11, 1969, she said, ". . .my husband's mother Elaine had the bible rebound and it is so tight that it would break the back to flatten it.  I have access to a Xerox machine and also our college has copy machines, but the book must be flattened.  I may be able to get a photography place to copy it, but the dates are in the fold and will be difficul to do even that.  I'll keep trying. . ."  She did get it copied and sent to Donna H. Hellewell. A copy did not get into the Calvin book published in 1999,  I apologize. It had been copied with black showing the names in white and was difficult to reproduce on a large scale.    I thought it came from Floyd Batty, rather than from Roy Batty Jr.  The letters from Garvene Batty had been "lost" until now, Aug., 2000.

Elaine appears on the Calvin L. Carpenter Family reunions in Athens, Calhoun, MI in 1906.  She attended others also.

The Athens Times, Friday, May 3, 1912.  Elaine Brownell of South Bend returned with her grandparents Friday night for a short visit.

The Athens Times, Thursday, May 15, 1924.  Neil A. Snyder Held Up In KalamazooSaturday Night.  Was Preparing to Close Standard Oil Filling Station When Bandit Appeared.  Neil A. Snyder, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Snyder, of this place, was the victim of a daring hold-up in Kalamazoo Saturday night, as will be seen from the following story from the Kalamazoo Gazette. Judging from the description, it was the same hold-up man who robbed two Battle Creek oil stations the same night.  "Forcing Neil A. Snyder, in charge of the filling station at Harrison and Main streets, into the building at the point of a revolver, a lone bandit Saturday night obtained $75 from the safe and from Snyder's pockets.  The holdup occurred at 10:45 when there was little pedestrian or auto traffic at the intersection. Snyder was preparing to close the station when he was approached by the bandit and ordered to throw up his hands.  Turning, he stared into the barrel of a blue steel automatic.  Snyder was backed into the station, where the robber ransacked his pockets.  Keeping Snyder covered with the revolver, the holdup man opened the safe and drew forth all the currency he could find, jamming the money into his pockets., He next approached the station manager and ordered him to back into the anteroom.  The bandit then closed the door, warning Snyder to 'stay there,' and then the robber made a hasty getaway.  Snyder immediately left the anteroom, but could find no further traces of the bandit.  He attempted to notify the manager of the oil company for which he worked, but failed to locate that individual.  He then drove to the corner of Main and Burdick streets and there gave the alarm to the police.  Detectives were sent to all parts of the city in an effort of obtain some clue as to the whereabouts or the identity of the bandit."
