I would like to get something put together before he dies. I have done genealogy research for about 30 years now so I am pretty experienced but am stuck. This is what I have so far. Most of this research I did and some I copied but very little. If you can help thank you if not that is OK. I have read that Thomas might not be Thomas Jackson and that his father might not be Solomon from VA there is a lot of mis-info. out there on the Carpenter family from the research I have done it appears that to this point most of what I have is right but when it comes to the generations that follow Thomas there is some wrong info. out there. If you can help it would be great. If anything that I have is wrong info. let me know.Thank you so much for your timeDebbie CubbedgeMy email cubbed4@aol.com 1 Thomas Jackson Carpenter --------------------------------------------------Birth: 1740, Botetourt, VADeath: 6 Aug 1803, Nash, NCMississippi State and Territorial Census Collection, 1792-1866 about Thomas CarpenterName: Thomas CarpenterCensus Date: 1841County: ChickasawLine: 27Roll: v229_1Abstracts of records of Nash Co. If this is this Reuben then he was born closer to 1765 and the birth date online that I found from another researcher was 1776 the 1765 date I think would be the correct date for birth since his first wife was born 1766 which was Mary Butler.A lot of people have copied there info. in the family trees on Ancestry and this info. is probably not right.Spouse: Mary ButlerBirth: 1766, Edgefield, Edgefield, SCDeath: 1838, Edgefield, Edgefield, SCFather: Thomas ButlerMother: Sarah Jane SempleChildren: Reuben (1800-1853)1.1.1 Reuben Carpenter--------------------------------------------------Birth: 1800, Edgefield, Edgefield, SCDeath: 1853, Gilmer, Upshur, TXReuben CarpenterDeloresAlbright40added this on 13 Feb 2007On August 28, 1832 in Edgefield, South Carolina, Reuben received $400 from his father's estate. Reuben Carpenter Jr., born c1790-1800 in SC, died in Upshur Co. TX in 1853. He married c1821 to Sarah Leatha _?_. In 1832 in Edgefield Co. SC he received $400 from his father's estate. He was taxed in Choctaw Co. MS in 1835, was in Chickasaw Co. MS at the 1840 census, and was in Upshur Co. TX at the 1850 census.QUESTION:
Reuben Jr receive $400 from his father's estate in 1832 while his father was still living? I assume the estate was actually from his mother's death as she died between1831-1839. Reuben "Sr" was alive in 1840 when he married Mrs. Henderson and was also listed in the 1840 census.

Hi Jan,
Since John Augusta Carpenter's sister Charlcy was born Feb. 22, 1840 I
believe that all the postings on Gus Carpenter's parents are incorrect.
Researchers in Camp County, where Gus lived most of his life, married
Sarah Cope, reared their children and finally died in 1881 have Gus's
father as Rueben Carpenter, Jr. and mother as Leatha (I believe that one
of the Carpenter kin there in Camp County gave me her maiden name as Faulkner.NAME: Sarah Aletha (Leathe) Faulkner

Subject: CARPENTER maybe you know?
Hi John & Terry,
...
Some of our line is a best guess based on circumstancial evidence. Keep in mind that Abigail Jordan & Unknown Carpenter had 3 sons: Reuben, John & Thomas.
...
REUBEN for sure had a son named Thomas named in his estate papers. It is "assumed" the Thomas b.1800 SC who married and went to Chickasaw MS (as did Reuben Jr ) was his son. Thomas had a son named Timothy which is unusual for our line (maybe his wife's family name). They also had 3 daughters: Caroline, Lucinda and Rebecca. "None" of them are found after the 1850 census. Timothy was listed as a soldier in the CSA and may have died. But what happened to Thomas & Avey and the girls? And are we sure this Thomas who lived in MS was the son of our Reuben Sr? Did he have sons born after 1850 ? Would love to solve this mystery.
...HISTORY:
Henry County, Georgia was created by the Georgia State Legislature in 1821 from land acquired from the Creek Indian Nation by the First Treaty of Indian Springs. Henry's original land area was much larger than it is today, stretching from near Indian Springs (present-day Indian Springs State Park) in the south to the Chattahoochee River near Sandy Springs in the north; encompassing most of present day Metropolitan Atlanta. Before one year passed the size of the County was diminished through the separation of land areas which, in whole or in part, became present day DeKalb, Fulton, Fayette and Newton Counties. Later divisions resulted in Clayton, Spalding, Rockdale and Butts Counties. In the beginning Henry County was a virgin wilderness, having just been ceded from the Creek Nation. Prior to 1821, the Creeks and a few trappers and traders were the only residents of this area. The Creek Indians left their mark through place names, a few small Indian Mounds scattered around the County and through the arrowheads and broken pottery which can be found throughout Henry County.
HISTORY:
The land for Lee, Muscogee, Troup, Coweta, and Carroll counties was ceded by the Creek people in the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs. The counties' boundaries were created by the Georgia General Assembly on June 9, 1826, but they were not named until December 14, 1826. Coweta County was named for the Koweta Indians (a sub-group of the Creek people), who had several towns in and around present day Coweta.

Bio: In Loving MemoryThis is a cenotaph created in loving memory of Sarah Ann Tobitha Jennings Carpenter [called Tobitha], second wife to Starling Carpenter and mother of several children. Starling Carpenter was a Confederate Civil War Veteran.
Starling and Tobitha Carpenter journeyed with their large family from Chickasaw County, Mississippi sometime after Starling Carpenter sold his land and property there. They journeyed to Angelina County, Texas, where they lived for awhile. Two of their daughters married during those years.
Starling and Tobitha eventually settled in Limestone County with some of their children before 1900. They must be buried in Limestone County, possibly in New Hope Cemetery. New Hope Cemtery is the resting place for at least 5 of their children. Starling Carpenter was a land owner in the 1900 US Census in Limestone County.

This is the family Bev KEY is researching:
1900 Randolph Co. CENSUS
William CARPENTER b.1835 GA
HOLLOWAY, Garrett b. ? ...........uncle
Just thought it would help if you knew how she got to this point.
additional info:
Bev, (from Donna)
Here is what I think I know about her father, Thomas M. :
His father was probably Thomas CARPENTER b. abt 1770-1790 who lived in Henry
Co. GA. Thomas M. was born 1810 in Henry-Lincoln-Walton Co. GA. (The county
lines moved around a lot) Thomas M. moved to Lebanon, AL around 1838. It
looks like father Thomas died or left GA in that same year as no other records
have I seen for him after that. Two years later (abt 1840) James Warren
(Thomas M.'s brother) moves to Lebanon but will leave there in two years and
settle in Clay Co.) Another brother (I say) was Reuben L. CARPENTER who also
moved to Lebanon about the same year as James Warren. Thomas M. will settle
in Randolph. I believe I saw a cemetery list some time ago showing Thomas
M.'s name in a Lebanon Cemetery. I will have to look back thru my saved stuff
to see if I can find it.
Not to confuse things, but some CARPENTER ancestors have this Thomas M. tied
to different parents. The reason I believe him to be the son of Thomas and
brother of James Warren is because Thomas M. is definitely listed on some land
transactions with Thomas Carpenter of Henry Co. GA along with a Zachariah
Carpenter (either a brother, son or parent of Thomas). The 3 are constantly
named together and Thomas M. lived on land owned by Thomas.

Hi Terry,
Couldn't remember if I sent this to you already.
Wayne Carpenter (who matches my dad's dna) sent me a photo of his great grandpa JAMES HENRY CARPENTER b.1862 and family [who Wayne says is a son of Ezra Carpenter]. The larger photo is one taken in Clay County AL of Sally (Harlen) and James Warren Carpenter relatives.
If I were just looking at these photos and nothing else, I would swear it is the same family. Amazing isn't it!
BTW: I finally am getting my gen files back online at www.tourlv.net/genealogy.html

Sarah Abigayle "Sallie" Harlen
NAME: HARLEN or HARLIN. Sallie wrote a letter in
1911 which was published in the Primitive Baptist Newsletter. She was
born in Oglethorpe or Wilkes GA. She moved to Henry Co. when she was five.
Her father died making the trip. Sallie and her brothers
David (Jered) and John were put under the guardianship of Mr. John R. Wilkens.
Later John R. Harlen was put in the guadianship of William J. Fears
Sallie married Warren when she was nineteen. They lived two years in
GA, then moved to Alabama border and shortly thereafter to Clay Co. Ala. where
they raised 9 children. Had 55 grandchildren, 174 great grandchildren
and 22 grt.grt grandchildren. Making 260 in all. Sallie and Warren were
active members of the Macedonia Church throughout their lives. Part of
Sallie's testimony in the letter stated, "I am obliged to praise Him if
He takes all I have, for He does all things well. He gives and the
right to take when it pleases Him." She is buried along side her husband at
the "old" Macedonia Cemetary, with her mother Judith (Morgan ?) Wilkens,
daughters Marthena, Emaly Caroline and Mary Ann; grandaughter Lucy M
Ponder; nephew(?) Elijah Thomas and husband Warren.
DATA:
When Sallie was about 5 yrs old, her father Zachariah HARLEN
died enroute from Wilkes Co., GA to Walton Co., GA. She told a
grandson that the "whitecaps killed him." Sallie's mother's
maiden name was Juda WILKINS. Sallie had two brothers, David Jered and John R.
Harlen. A $1500 bond was entered between Thomas CARPENTER and John R.
WILKINS, in Henry Co., GA. for the guardianship of the HARLEN children. Later,
Sallie would grow up and marry the son of Thomas CARPENTER, James Warren
CARPENTER. Her mother would remarry Elias C. MORGAN. In Henry County,
Elizabeth CARPENTER (possible daughter of Thomas) marries William WILKINS on
Mar 06, 1838, their relationship to Juda is unknown.
Was John R. WILKINS her grandfather? her uncle? How did Thomas CARPENTER tie
to the family? Questions I am trying to solve.
LETTER:
When Sallie was 90 yrs old, she wrote the following letter to her church.
This letter was copied from the Tuesday, May 2, 1911 Edition of the Primitive
Baptist.
THE PEACE
I have sat down to try to write a little for you all to read when I am gone.
My maiden
name was Sallie HARLEN. My father's name was Zachariah HARLEN, and my
mother's name was Juda WILKINS. I was born in Georgia in Oglethorpe or Wilks, I
can't say which. Was brought from there to Walton before I was five years old,
and from
there to Henry County before I was six. I lived there until I was grown. I was
raised by a
good widowed mother, my father being killed in the move from Wilks to Walton.
I married a good man named WARREN CARPENTER in 11-11-1838 in my nineteenth
year. In 1848 my dear husband and I joined the Primitive Baptist Church and
were
baptized by Elder Allen CLEVELAND, the second Sunday in February. It was a cold
day, but to me it was the most pleasant day I ever saw. That fall after we
joined the
church at Lebanon we made our first move to from Henry County to Alabama. We
just
got over the line and put our letters in Bethlehem Church. We were in Alabama
but the
church was in Georgia. We only stayed there two years, when we moved here, in
six
miles of Macedonia in 1850. I only had the pleasure of living with my dear
husbad
eighteen years and two months. He left me with nine children - six girls and
three boys.
By the help of the good Lord I raised them all to be grown, and then they begin
to die
and leave me to mourn and I now have but four left. But, oh, how good the
heavenly
Father is. He has held me up. He never let me sink under. I am obliged to
praise Him if
He takes all I have, for He does all things well. He gives and he has the right
to take
when it pleases Him. I have my dear husband, three daughters, one grandchild
and my
mother in one graveyard; one daughter in another and one son in another. It
seems like I
am staying here a long time. If I live until the first day of March I will be
ninety-one
years old. My offspring is large. I now have but four living children out of
nine. Of my
grandchildren there are fifty-five; great-grandchildren, 174; great-great
grandchildren,
twenty-two; making in all 260. Of this number there are, as near as I can
count, thirty-six
of them dead. My oldest child is in her seventy-second year and is still able
to come
from North Alabama to see me. My youngest is nearly fifty-five years old, and
is the
father of thirteen children. I beg the prayers of all Christian people, that
when I have
stayed my stay out here that I may be prepared to say, "Come, Welcome death, I
will
gladly go with thee." I know that within myself I do nothing. I hope my loving
Jesus will
be near that I may lean my head on His breast and breathe my life out sweetly
there,
and waft my soul to that home where there will be no sorrow nor sad farewells.
Your sister in hope of a better world, SallieCarpenter Ashland, Alabama
P.S. I have been a member at Macedonia sixty-years this past January, and I
sometimes
fear that I have deceived those good people that I so much love and have
permitted me
to live with them all this time. I had a big family, nearly all of whom have
passed away to
that happy home, as I hope, and are at rest, and I hope to meet them some sweet
day
when we will all be the same.
LOCATION: I have been told that the original church was established in 1843 two

We just got OVER THE LINE and put our letters in BETHLEHEM CHURCH. We were in Alabama BUT THE CHURCH WAS IN GEORGIA. We only stayed there TWO YEARS, when we moved here, in SIX MILES OF MACEDONIA IN 1850."
In 1857, Sally's husband died leaving her to raise the children. She was a strong Christian woman. In another part of her testimony (written 1911), she writes, "I only had the pleasure of living with my dear husband eighteen years and two months. He left me with nine children - six girls and three boys. By the help of the good Lord I raised them all to be grown, and then they begin to die and leave me to mourn and I now have but four left. But, oh, how good the heavenly Father is. He has held me up. He never let me sink under. I am obliged to praise Him if He takes all I have, for He does all things well. He gives and he has the right to take when it pleases Him. I have my dear husband, three daughters, one grandchild and my mother in one graveyard; one daughter in another and one son in another. It seems like I am stayig here a long time. If I live until the first day of March I will be ninety-one years old."
Sally lived another 3 years, dying in 1914 just one month short of her 94th birthday. She had saved letters written to her by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She estimated she had over 260 descendants.

NAME: Mary Jane or Nancy Jane?
MARRIAGE: Sharon at Mhbthor@aol.com has marriage date to William J.
Willoughby as Sept. 9, 1877.
PARENTS:
Not proved as a child of Thomas Carpenter (1775/1780 - 1838/1845).
Not proved as a child of a George Carpenter (1785-1850).
The next generation is our best guess as to the father of Charles K. Carpenter.
Option 1. Thomas Carpenter of Henry County, Georgia. (b. 1770 to 1780, d. about 1838)
Option 2. George Carpenter of DeKalb County Georgia (b. 1770 to 1780, d. about 1848)
From census records, we know that Charles K. Carpenter was born in Georgia in 1816. We also know from census records, that his mother and father were also born in Georgia.
Family stories indicate that Charles K. Carpenter had at least 2 if not 3 brothers and that the family had come to Georgia from Pennsylvania, however their names are not known.
We are very excited about the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project and are anxious to learn the results and discover unknown ancestors. We would like to be able to contact other in the project or have others contact us to compare notes, once our test results are known.
Thanks, Samuel Glen Carpenter
