Notes

40. Reuben Lee Carpenter

Confirmed  as a child of Thomas Carpenter.

NAME: Reuben or Reubin. Middle name maybe Lewis.

BIRTH: AF has birth in Walton county, GA. AF has death year has 1865.
He had 11 children from 1848 to 1863.

MARRIAGE: 21 Jan 1848 per Donna and April 27, 1833, in Gwinett Co., GA per
Sharon.  Lineville, ALA [LDS File] note: Jordan Dobbs dates it 1-22-1849.
This Reuben was born 1828, thus the 1833 date would be incorrect.

Enlisted 17 APR 1862 AND died 21 JUN 1863. He was with the CSA  25th AL INF Co. G.

DEATH:
His death date might indicate he died in or of one of the battles for Shelbyville, TN.

NOTE: The lineage of Reuben L. Carpenter who married Emily Garrett was covered in a work called "My Ancestry" by Mattie Bell Carpenter Ross 1974. Ms Ross did a lot of work and most of it is accurate. However, she had mistakes, one of which was the parents of Reuben L. Carpenter. If anyone used Ms Ross's work as a reference, you might want to review it.   Donna Cuzze

E-MAIL MESSAGE: 27 Apr. 1998: Bev,
SPECULATION:  John L. is listed with his family in 1900 Clay Co. Census with
mother Emily living with them.  All born in ALA except Emily who was born in
GA. (Emily has a child Elijah Thomas in the Baptist cemetery in Clay Co. The
headstone lists  R.L.   [Reuben L.] as husband of Emily).  I suspect this
Emily in this census  is wife of Reuben L. and therefore John L. would be
their son.

John,
I haven't worked on my genealogy in quite awhile.  But today I decided to try
to work on it some, so I have some new/additional info for you.  Hope you can
use it.  Unless otherwise stated, I think it probably comes from John McClure
who was researching the Carpenters in Alabama.
Sharon
Reuben L. Carpenter - His body was interred in Murfreesboro, Tn,
Murfreesboro, TN, Military Cemetery. Reuben served in the CSA as a member of
Company G 25th Regiment Alabama Infantry.  His name appears on a record of
officers and soldiers who were killed in battle, or who died of wounds or
disease, which states he died June 21, 1863.  Tradition is that Reuben L. had
a weak stomach not adapted to army food.  A neighbor returned home from the
war and said his weak stomach caused his sickness and death.  One report said
he died of typhoid fever, but service records do not state death cause. (My
footnote on this reads "John McClure -- Note from book:  Some Descendants of
Joseph Carpenter Edward Garrett etc.").   ...
(THIS MEANS HE WAS A CSA CIVIL WAR VET!!! jrc)
... He married Emily Garrett, on (NOTE THE DIFFERENT MARRIAGE DATE!!! jrc)
April 27, 1833, in Gwinett Co., GA. She died on May 31, 1915.  I also have
the following children listed for him that you do not:
1.  Nancy Jane Carpenter, born Sept. 9, 1851.  She married Gee Jathro Hamlin.
I obtained from a marriage record book a marriage date of Aug. 27, 1879, for
a C. J. Hamlin and a Mary J. Carpenter.  I wonder if these are the same
people.
2.  Jonethy Carpenter born June 8, 1855.  She married Dixon Hall McCain on
Dec. 15, 1869.  Dixon served in the CSA in Co. C 54th Regiment Alabama
Partisan Rangers.  They had the following children:
   A.  Edward McCain
   B.  Donnie Elvir McCain
   C.  Hiram Sanders McCain
   D.  Emily Abigail McCain, born on Nov. 10, 1872, died April 8, 1932.
   E.  Reuben Glover McCain, born on April 29, 1875, died on Nov. 10, 1948.
   F.  Osie L. McCain, born in 1880, died July 14, 1883.
   G.  Willie P. McCain, born 1884, died Feb. 19, 1885
   H.  Beula Arminda McCain, born March 3, 1894, died Jan. 19, 1966.
   I.  Molly Clementine McCain, born Nov. 12, 1896.
3.  Julia Ann Carpenter, born March 22, 1858.  She married James "Jim" Pitts,
Clay Co., AL, May 5, 1881. Record # 510 James Pitts to Julia Carpenter on May
5, 1881, by H.S. Manning, MG, at residence of Bride's father.  Bond: James

4.  Sara Armenda Carpenter was born 1860.  She died 1958.  She married Glenn
Hudson. [Note to myself:  I wonder if this is Lacy Hudson's brother (J.G.).]
5.  Sophronia Carpenter was born 7 June 1861.  She married John H. Harris
Clay Co., AL, Nov. 9, 1877. Record # 41-450 John H. Harris to Saphrona A.
Carpenter on December 9 1877 by G. B. Knight, OM, at residence of Emily
Carpenter. Bond: Jno. H. Harris, J.L. Carpenter and D. C. Creed. [My
footnote:  Same as for # 3.]  Sophronia and John had one known child.

Subject: CARPENTER maybe you know?
Hi John & Terry,
...
Some of our line is a best guess based on circumstancial evidence. Keep in mind that Abigail Jordan & Unknown Carpenter had 3 sons: Reuben, John & Thomas.
...
THOMAS had a son in his 1830 census born 1825-1830. Reuben L Carpenter b.1828 GA was mentioned in a law suit with Warren Carpenter. Warren is son of Thomas. Both Warren & Reuben moved to Talladega AL about the same time. Reuben named his first born son Elijah Thomas Carpenter. Elijah was his wife's father and assume Thomas was for his father. Reuben's son Elijah Thomas was buried in Old Macedonia with Warren Carpenter & family. Tombstone reads: "Elijah Thomas 4-27-1849 4-13-1855 Son of R.L. and Emily." Reuben L's wife was Emily GARRETT. Her sister Nancy married the son of Warren's brother Zach. Sounds convincing but I would love to find a descendant of this line to prove it.
note: Thomas & John's children were born in GA while Reuben's children were born in SC. Actually they lived across the river from one another. The river is the state line between GA & SC.
THOMAS had a son Thomas M. Carpenter b.1810 GA. When Thos M died in 1853, he left 11 children.
The younger boys were:
1. James R b.1839 GA was in house of his "brother in law Joseph Tanner's uncle, J.G. MORRIS in 1860. Died CSA 1863.
2. John W. b. 1840 AL was in house of his "brother in law Joseph Tanner's uncle, J.G. MORRIS in Carrol Co GA 1860.
"POSSIBLY the J.W. died in Civil War, bur: LaGrange GA. Nothing else known.
3. Joseph b. 1842 AL may have died CSA Apr 10, 1862 ? Nothing else known.
4. Lewis b. 1845 AL cannot find in the 1860 census. May have gone to TX with his Uncle Zach Carpenter.
5. Zachariah b. 1849 AL cannot find inthe 1860 census. May have gone to TX with his Uncle Zach Carpenter.
...
Thanks, Donna
