Jennifer “Hope” Carpenter
Birth: 28 Nov 1949 Brazoria County, Texas, USA
Death: 23 Mar 2015 (aged 65) Montgomery, Montgomery County, Texas, USA
Burial: Unknown

Memorial #: 144422108
Bio:
Jennifer “Hope” Carpenter, of Montgomery, Texas lost her courageous battle on March 23, 2015.

Hope was born to Odis and Gladys Carpenter in Brazoria County on November 28, 1949.

Hope spent her last 20 years with Karen Herzik in Kemah, Houston, and Montgomery. She is survived by her sister, Jaymie Morris and husband Wayne, a brother Odis Carpenter; nephews Terry Morris and wife Lindy, Scott Morris and wife Ginger, Kelly Morris and wife Nikie, as well as nieces and nephews, Carl Dale, Cindy, Carla, Karen, Teresa and Cheryl. Hope enjoyed golfing, boating, camping, singing and listening to music around the campfire. She had a passion for helping those less fortunate than her. She regularly donated to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and on her twice a week trips to Houston for her blood transfusions, she never missed the opportunity to donate at least a couple of dollars to a particular homeless man. On occasion she would pack a homemade meal and insist that Karen go deliver it to a homeless lady living in the nearby woods. She was always ready to cook a good meal and surround herself with friends for a fun evening.

A memorial service honoring Jennifer Hope Carpenter will be held at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery, Texas on Friday, March 27th at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or make a donation of Hope’s true Gift of Life – the gift of donating blood.

COMMENT:
The Lost Battalion (Pacific, World War II) was the 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery, 36th Infantry Division (Texas National Guard) of the U.S. Army. The men of the battalion, plus the survivors of the sunken Cruiser USS Houston, were captured by the Japanese on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in March 1942. It is called the lost battalion because the fate of the men was unknown to the United States until September 1944. They were prisoners of war for 42 months until the end of World War II. 534 soldiers from the battalion and 368 survivors of the Houston were taken prisoner. Most of the men were sent to Thailand to work on the Burma Railway, the building of which is portrayed in the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. Of the 902 soldiers and sailors taken captive, 163 died in captivity. Most of the prisoners of war were from western Texas.

601. Bonnie Dell Carpenter

GRAVE:  picture of the couple
Bonnie Dell Carpenter Atkins
Birth: 17 Mar 1934 Limestone County, Texas, USA
Death: 22 Mar 2013 (aged 79) Old Union, Limestone County, Texas, USA
Burial: Wilson Chapel Cemetery, Donie, Freestone County, Texas, USA
Memorial #: 108518784
Bio: Bonnie Dell Atkins, 79, of Old Union, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Walker officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2013. Burial will take place in Wilson Chapel Cemetery.

Bonnie was born in Limestone County, Texas, to the late Coleman Carpenter and Odel (Walker) Carpenter. She attended school in Groesbeck until the family moved to Robinson, where she graduated from high school in 1952. In Robinson, she met her future husband, Thomas (Tom) Atkins, who was stationed at James Connelly Air Force Base. She was a beautiful blue-eyed, dark-haired, 97-pound young lady.

Tom's mother came down to visit him in Texas from his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Bonnie made the train trip back to Minnesota with her in the summer of 1952. Tom came up to St. Paul on leave, and they were united in marriage on December 27, 1952. They came back to Waco to live, just in time to survive the tragic Waco tornado of 1953. Their son was born while in Waco. After Tom's discharge from the Air Force, they moved back to St. Paul, where she was a wife and mother, with four girls being born in Minnesota. They finally decided to leave the cold winters behind and come back to Texas around 1976.

Bonnie attended cosmetology college in Waco and remained there as an instructor for ten years. She also worked in several local shops around Groesbeck for awhile.

Bonnie loved to travel, and with the girls living in other states after they were grown and married, Tom and Bonnie visited each one every year and also took their children and later the grandchildren on many trips. In addition to travel, Bonnie loved to fish. She loved to be out on the lakes in Minnesota fishing, with her boat full of children. She remained a beautiful lady all her life, who was happy- go-lucky, and had a wonderful smile. She deeply loved her husband, children and grandchildren, and was concerned and worried about all of them until her final days.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her son, Lawrence "Larry" Atkins who passed away April 19, 1980; and by her grandson, Shawn Morgenstern.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Thomas Atkins, of Old Union; daughters, Joyce Gray and husband, James, of Denison, Pamela Hayne, and Dana Daly and husband, Mike, both of Minnesota, and Melody Ryan and husband, Richard, of Wisconson; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Taylor, of Fort Worth; many other relatives and friends.
