Progenitor of Group 16 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.

Notes

4. John Carpenter

Compare to John Carpenter-5351 - one of his wives belong to this John.  More research needed.

BIRTH: abt 1776-1794 per 1820 census. His spouse (name unk) born about 1776-1794 also. However, Abt 1772/1776
seems a general consensus.  Probably born in Edgefield County, SC. Migrated to Lincoln Co GA and Coweta?

DEATH: Died after 1820 maybe in Lincoln County Georgia?

TAX RECORD: 1803 GA TAXROLL: John, Reuben and Thomas were listed on GA taxroll.

CENSUS-1: 1810 GA, Lincoln Co. Capt Jordan Leverett's District 1.  Lived next to " JOHN C. JORDAN. " Also a Edward MORGAN in Dist 3 and a John MORGAN is Dist 5.

CENSUS-2: 1820 John Carpenter 1776-1794, spouse 1776-1794, Son 1802-1804 (Unknown), Son 1795-1805 (Thomas).  Daughter Abigail had already married.

LAND-1: 1792 GA, LINCOLN, James MOFFET of Wilkes Co to Thos Moffett, 250a in Wilkies on Wells Crk. Wit: JOHN CARPENTER, Sarah McClendal & Henry Ware.

RECORD-1:  "Diary of Josephine C. Robinson" stated Abigail Jordan Carpenter had three sons named Thomas, Reuben and John.

NOTE:  Info on John's children from Terry L. Carpenter and Greg Nabors.

MARRIAGE:  Wife unknown - born about 1776-1794

CHILDREN OF JOHN & UNKNOWN CARPENTER

Abigail? Carpenter circa 1795-1800 m. Ellis Lott
Thomas Carpenter b. Oct 1, 1801 m. Luvenia “Lovie” Johnson
Unknown Son circa 1802-1804

I don't have much info on John.  He disappears after the 1820 census. Per Donna Carpenter Cuzze.
In 1818 I only found record of, John Carpenter listed in LINCOLN GA, no township. In that same tax list were JORDANS: Levi, John C., Jacob & John.

Leon,
You show Abigail's son John Carpenter b.1774 with connections to Franklin Co GA. However, I don't think so. Here is why:
Although the John in Franklin County was about the same age and had kids born about the same time, there are a few differences.
1) John of Franklin was listed in the 1810 tax list while our John was listed in the 1810 & 1820 Lincoln Co tax list.
2) John of Franklin was still there in 1830 while our John supposedly died 1824 in Coweta.

Hi John & Terry,
...
Some of our line is a best guess based on circumstancial evidence. Keep in mind that Abigail Jordan & Unknown Carpenter had 3 sons: Reuben, John & Thomas.
JOHN appears to have had an Unknown Son b.1802-1804 in his house in the 1820 census but we don't know who he was or if he died young. John died before 1830 and his known son Thomas Carpenter b.1801 moved to Coweta GA as did his sister Abigail. Then Abigail and some of Thomas's children moved to Talladega AL. Anyone have suspicions as to who the Unknown Son may have been?

Hello Group 16,
Here is what we need to look for in the way of other descendants of John, Reuben & Thomas. Assuming that each of them named a son after the other, plus popular names down the chain, a process of elimination left me with some logical guesses as to their names.
All of them had a Thomas so we are NOT looking any Thomas's.
Son b. 1800-1810 SC possible names: John, Starling, Robert, Zachariah, Warren (or James W.)
Son b. 1800-1810 SC possible names: John, Starling, Robert, Zachariah, Warren (or James W.)
Son b. 1795-1805 GA possible names: John, Starling, Reuben*, Robert, Zachariah, Warren (or James W.)
Son b. 1815-1820 GA possible names: John, Starling, Robert
HERE IS HOW I ARRIVED AT THIS CONCLUSION:
...
JOHN - 1 Unknown Son
Based on the 1820 Lincoln census, John had a spouse and 2 sons. Abigail had already married and moved out.
1 Son 1802-1804 (Unknown)
1 Son 1795-1805 (Thomas was born 1801 which is close to the 1802 date, so could be either category)
So we are looking for 1 son born in GEORGIA.
Son b. 1795-1805 GA possible names: Reuben, John, Starling

5. Rueben Carpenter Sr.

NAME: Middle name maybe "Lee".

ANCESTRY:
Reuben who died in Edgefield circa 1840 was ""NOT"" a son of Thomas Jack Carpenter & Mary Lee nor is he known to be any part of the Nash County Carpenters. Reuben was listed in 1800 & 1810 in Edgefield while the other Reuben (son of Jack) was listed in the Nash Co census of 1800 & 1810. To say he was accidentally double enumerated twice in two decades in two different counties and states is hardly likely. An 1884 diary indicates Reuben of Edgefield was the son of Abigail JORDAN and an Unknown Mr. Carpenter who died in the American Revolution. Reuben was probably born in SC or at least lived there in childhood. DNA of descendants of Reuben of Edgefield do not match the Nash Co NC Carpenters either. Donna Cuzze
CHILDREN: Reuben, John & Thomas were listed on the 1803 GA tax roll.
Rueben L. Carpenter Sr, was supposedly listed as a farmer in Edgefield Co.,
South Carolina.  His son Thomas was in Henry Co Georgia during the 1820 and
1830 census.  Thomas did a lot of land dealings in the Land Lottery.  He too
must have been a fanner as in different years his land was auctioned off.
His son Thomas M. Carpenter and James Warren also had land records in GA.
Surprisingly, there is a $1,500.00 bond between Thomas (the father)
and John Wilkens, in Much the agreement states that John Wilkens will
take guardianship of Sallie, David Jered find John Harlen who
were orphaned.  There seems to be a lot of Zachariahs and Reuben Lee
Carpenters.
Trying to figure if they were children. brothers or father is difficut.
I have taken my best guess at putting them where I think they belong based
on dates hearsay, stories and land transactions (which would mean they would
have to be old enough to buy, etc.).
Reuben, brother John & son Thomas were listed on the 1803 GA tax roll.
In 1805 Henry, John & Thomas were listed in the Lincoln Co. Georgia Land
Lottery.

BIRTH: B. abt 1766/1776 Halifax District, Nash, NC may belong to another Carpenter.
Birth about 1770/1774 in SC per Donna Carpenter Cuzze - See NOTES: below.
General consensus is abt 1770/1774 in SC.

Hi Jan,
Since John Augusta Carpenter's sister Charlcy was born Feb. 22, 1840 I
believe that all the postings on Gus Carpenter's parents are incorrect.
Researchers in Camp County, where Gus lived most of his life, married
Sarah Cope, reared their children and finally died in 1881 have Gus's
father as Rueben Carpenter, Jr. and mother as Leatha (I believe that one
of the Carpenter kin there in Camp County gave me her maiden name as
Faulkner). Gus had 8 brothers and sisters. The first five children of
this family were born in South Carolina and the last 4 were born in
Mississippi. I have shared information with the Carpenter kin in Upshur
and Camp counties because of Gus and his sister Charlcy marrying the
sister and brother of my great grandfather. Normally I do not research
the ancestry of those who marry into the Cope family but much
information from family Bible records, public records, and unpublished
and published Civil War documents mentioning the Carpenters have fallen
in my lap and I share it like others have shared with me.

If the Carpenters were in my direct line I would read the deed records
of all early Carpenter land purchases in Upshur and Camp Counties to see
if I could find indisputable proof of Gus's father, but that is not the
case. Usually the passage of title to real estate from parents to
children is the best proof other than wills and probate records.

Per TLC:
- Reuben Carpenter Sr., born c1776-1780, died c1843 in Edgefield Co. SC. He is posited as a son by the preponderance of evidence. The Y-DNA of a posited descendant through his son Reuben Jr. {FTDNA #21005, descendant of son Reuben Jr.} links him with a descendant {FTDNA #78860} of Thomas Carpenter, another posited son of Abigail (Jordan) Carpenter; both are matched 25/25 with another descendant of Reuben Jr. {FTDNA #187121, descendant of son Reuben Jr. through a different grandson than 21005}. {All should match FTDNA #192004 (1 Nov 2010).} Reuben Carpenter Sr. married first c1795 to Mary Butler, who was born c1780. In 1800 he was enumerated in Edgefield Co. SC. He had purchased land in 1805 in Lincoln Co. GA from Thomas Carpenter and others, who had purchased it from Thomas Moffatt in 1803, but sold it in Jan 1809 and left GA not long after, because on 14 Dec 1809 in Edgefield Co. SC he witnessed a deed for 50 acres on the waters of Stephens Creek. In 1810 he was enumerated in Edgefield Co. SC. On 19 Nov 1822 he was mentioned as a landowner on Stephens Creek in Edgefield Co. SC. He was enumerated in Edgefield Co. SC in 1830 and 1840. He married second at the age of 75 on 16 Aug 1840 in Edgefield Co. SC to Mrs. Rebecca Henderson, who was age 72, and the widow of Bennett Henderson. His residual estate was sold in Edgefield Co. SC in 1843, naming his widow Rebecca and nine children.

In 1800 Edgefield SC census is our Ruben Carpenter Sr. living next to Even (Erven) BUTLER and as you know, Ruben married Mary BUTLER.
That same Even (Erven) Butler lives near Ruben Jr in the 1830 Edgefield census. So I do not think the Ruben in the NC census could possibly be our Ruben. I do not believe he was enumerated in Nash and then in Edgefield the same year.
1800 CENSUS : SC, EDGEFIELD, Ruben Carpenter 1755 -1774, Spouse-1774 - 1784, male 1790 - 1800 (Reuben Jr? , male 1790 -1800 (Thomas?). NEIGHBORS: Lewis Martin, Giles Satcher, Wyat? Logan, Evan *BUTLER, Thomas Dison.

RECORD-3:  Someone (sorry I didn't document it) said that on August 28, 1832 in Edgefield, SC, Reuben [Jr] received $400 from his father's estate. He [Reuben Jr] was taxed for it in Choctaw Co. MS.  Reuben Jr was subsequently listed in the 1840 Chickasaw Co MS census.  ***HOWEVER, I show Reuben “Sr” still alive in the 1840 Edgefield census and also marrying in 1840 .  I think the estate may have had something to do with the death of Reuben “Sr's” wife, Mary Butler Carpenter who died 1831-1839?

RECORD-4:  Reuben Sr's daughter Mary married James GRAY.  “They resided in Edgefield County, South Carolina in 1830 next door to Reuben Carpenter.  They were in Chickasaw County, Mississippi at the 1840 census.  In 1843 she and her husband gave power of attorney to John Griffis to collect her share of her father's estate (Reuben Carpenter) in Edgefield County, South Carolina.  They were still in Chickasaw Co, Ms at the 1850 census (National Archives Microfilm Publications (census).  They reportedly moved to Franklin County, Arkansas after 1880 (Jack Gray).”

OF INTEREST EDGEFIELD CO:
Reuben Carpenter Sr deeded land on Stevens & Turkey Creek.  Today that would be near Parksville, in McCormack County SC.  Many of the land features were changed after the dam was built.  Early deeds for this area were considered to be Granville District which was later abolished.  On a map dated 1776 is the name CARPENTER at the head of the South Fork Edisto River which would be in Edgefield/Aiken County today.  The reference was probably to the land of ABIAH CARPENTER and his wife Margaret.  On a reconstructed map of the Long Cane Settlement (called the Index to Abbeville District Colonial Plats), are several persons of interest.  This land was allocated in 1762 to Irish Protestant immigrants following a 1760 massacre of inhabitants by Indians.  One JOSEPH CARPENTER was given bounty land there in 1765.  Near him is John GRAY (remember Reuben Carpenter's daughter Mary married James Gray in Edgefield.  Not too far from him were Phillip and Henry ZIMMERMAN who also obtained their land in 1765.  In 1767 Dazell HUNTER deeded land almost right next to Joseph Carpenter.  In 1775 there was a Capt. David HUNTER who deeded in the same area.  The Moffetts and Hunters had several marriages together and possibly had connections to the Hunters in this area (although the Moffetts owned land in Chester Co SC from 1768-1791).  These Abbeville Colonial plats were a little west of center between the current town of McCormack and Greenwood, SC in probably what is today Troy or Bradley in GREENWOOD COUNTY (almost a straight line across the Savannah to Lincolnton, GA where Thomas, Reuben and John Carpenters deeded land as well as the Moffetts and Jordans in 1803.

... We know Thomas Moffett was living in WILKES / LINCOLN CO GA and that he and Abigail moved to Jasper Co GA after marriage. We know in 1794 that John & Thomas Carpenter paid taxes in WARREN GA and Reuben was living in EDGEFIELD SC in 1800. We know the three brothers bought land from James Moffett in 1805 LINCOLN GA. After that, Reuben lived in EDGEFIELD, Thomas went to HENRY GA and John stayed in LINCOLN GA until at least 1820.

10. Elizabeth Carpenter

In 1840, Reuben Sr's daughter Elizabeth who married Geo W Hancock was listed born 1810-1820 and had only TWO SONS b.1835-1840 , no daughters.
1840 CENSUS: SC, EDGEFIELD: George Hancock 1810-1820, spouse 1810-1820, 2-males 1835-1840.
You cite a census record showing that the Elizabeth born 1795 of the Chesterfield Co SC census is Reuben Sr's daughter. I have an alternate suggestion.
I found a George W & Elizabeth Hancock, of the correct age of the 1840 census, listed in Arkansas.
1850 United States Federal Census about George W Hancocke Name: George W Hancocke Age: 30 Birth Year: abt 1820 Birthplace: South Carolina Home in 1850: Tucker, Clark, Arkansas Gender: Male Family Number: 43 Household Members: Name Age George W Hancocke 1820 SC,
Elizabeth 1820 SC,
Dianacias (male) 1838 SC,
Mary Ann 1842 SC,
Frances Ann 1845 SC,
John Washington 1849 AR,
Thomas Hancocke 1831 SC. order listed suggests this is Georges' brother John Thomas Hancock.
The above coincides with the 1840 census of 2 sons born bef 1840 and no girls born before 1840.

Rebecca

Listed as Mrs. Rebecca Henderson, a widow.

6. Thomas Carpenter

Reuben, John & Thomas were listed on the 1803 GA tax roll.
In 1805 Henry, John & Thomas were listed in the Lincoln Co. Georgia Land Lottery.  Upto 1838, Thomas was named in various land transactions in Henry Co. GA along with Zachariah.  He put up the $1500.00 bond with Wilkes for the Harlen kids guardianship.

THOMAS CARPENTER c.1785 of Henry Co Georgia

There seems to be some confusion over the Thomas CARPENTERS who were all born between 1780 and 1811 living in GA.

A few years ago, I gave my original information to John R. Carpenter for his Carpenter CD.  Since that time, I have been able to gather and analyze more records.  In 1999, I collaborated with Terry Carpenter (authored works on Southern Carpenter lines) and also with Steve Mardonak (reasearcher of the Jordan-Moffetts) .  There were at least three Thomas Carpenters in Walton/Henry County area circa early 1800s.  Let me see if I can clarify these three.

We must begin with the story of Abigail Jordan-Carpenter-Moffett.  According to an old diary, Abigail Jordan and an unknown Carpenter ( who died) had three sons... John, Reuben & Thomas.  Abigail remarried Thomas Moffett in SC and relocated to GA.  Steve Martanak and Terry Carpenter believe these brothers to be the children of Henry County GA circa early 1800s.  Records show Thomas Carpenter witnessing a land transaction for Jordans as early as 1805.  There are other records  of the same era indicating the Moffet and Carpenter families are connected as shown on Steve Martanak's website.

 Pages 45-6.

You can see they definitely knew each other.  I suspect that these Carpenters may have been descendants of the Boutetart VA line but it is not proven.  Regardless of their lineage, my work presumes these three Carpenters, living in the same general area of Lincoln / Henry Counties in GA circa early 1800s, were related.  Rueben and Thomas Carpenter's descendants continued using the names Thomas, Zachariah & Rueben through the current years.

THOMAS CARPENTER c. 1780 of Henry Co GA

This Thomas is the purported son of Abigail Jordan and Unknown Carpenter.  An earlier work done by Mrs. E. L. Ross on the Alabama families who originated from Thomas Carpenter of Henry County GA through his son James Warren Carpenter, said Thomas's father was Reuben S. Carpenter of Edgefield SC.  Most folks took Mrs. Ross's work for granted.   However, I found some discrepencies and have made changes to my outline (click to see outline) excluding the idea that Reuben was Thomas's father.   I believe Thomas to be the brother of John & Reuben Carpenters, born circa 1776-1785.  Some of my reasoning is as followis:

 a)  Thomas and his brother Reuben each named a son Thomas and Reuben.

 b)  There was a Zachariah Carpenter born c.1805 living in Henry County GA who is named in fi-fa suits with Thomas & James Warren, Rueben & Thomas M Carpenters as either co-defendants or co-complainteffs.   This definitely proves a relationship.

 c)  Since Thomas was named along with Zachariah in land transactions and witnessed transactions for Thomas and vice versa as early as 1827, and assuming one should be 16 +yrs old to sign, then Zachariah was probably born before 1811. Zachariah sold land to Thomas in 1831 which might indicate he is same age or older than Thomas. Don't know the connection between them, suspect Zachariah was either a father, brother or son.

 d)  My grandfather told me that his brother, Zackie, was named for a
ancestor who went to war and never returned.

 e)  Thomas M., James W. and William Henry Carpenters (William another suspected son of Thomas) all named a child Zachariah. Therefore, I listed him as a
 probable son.

 f)  There was a Reuben L. Carpenter mentioned in some of the later transactions with Thomas and James Warren Carpenters in Henry County.  (see more about Reuben L below).

 g)  My own line is through James Warren Carpenter, the son of Thomas Carpenter (c.1780).  This connection is definitely provable through the published church record left by James Warren's wife Sarah Abigayle Harlen who states her mother was a Wilkin, her father was a Harlan and that Sarah was the wife of James Warren and that she was orphaned in 1824.  Henry County records show Thomas Carpenter and Sarah's maternal uncle, John R. Wilkins, put up bond for her guardianship.  Thomas's daughter Elizabeth married William Wilkins the brother of Sarah Abigayle's mother Judah Wilkins.  Sarah and James Warren sued John R. Wilkins in 1838.

 h)  1838 is the year in which I believe Thomas Carpenter (c.1780) died at approximate age of 58.  He is not found after this in records of Henry Co GA.  Several sons and Carpenter families, believed to be related, moved to Talladega and Randolph Counties Alabama between 1835 and 1840.

Census info indicates Thomas Carpenter (c.1780) had 12 childen.  The ones highlighted went to Alabama:

   Suspected children of Thomas :

Zachariah, Elizabeth (AL) , Thomas M.(AL) , Frances, James Warren (AL) , Samuel (AL) , Charles K.(AL) , 3 unidentified girls, William Henry (AL) ,  Reuben L. (AL)

 THOMAS "M." CARPENTER son of Thomas (c.1780): b. Apr 23, 1810 GA > AL

If one looks at the records of Henry Co GA, you will see almost every time Thomas the elder of Henry Co GA is mentioned, this Thomas "M" is named there with him.  He was probably the son of Thomas Carpenter (c.1780) of Henry County and he was the most probable brother of James Warren Carpenter who married Sarah Abigail Harlin.   This Thomas M. Carpenter was found circa 1836-1838 in Carroll / Heard County GA and in 1839 in Lebanon AL land deeds which is right on the Heard County Ga and Randolph County AL border.  In 1850 he was found in the Randolph County AL census.  He married Lucinda / Ruth Barrow and died 1853 in Randolph County AL.  He left children at the ages of 20-18-17-15-14-13-11-8-6-4-2-1

Children of Thomas M. are:   Mary L/E, William Thomas, Elisabeth, Lucinda, James R. John W., Joseph, Lewis, Martha, Zachariah, Robert A, Nathan.  Luckily, Thomas "M"s daughter, Elizabeth married John Holloway and descendant Bev Key was copied on a Bible record.

The minor children were split up:
-Mary L had married Joseph TANNER and apparently took her 2 yr old brother Robert A. to live with her in Carroll Co. GA.
-James R. (now 21) was living in 1860 Carroll Co GA Censes with J.G. MORRIS
and his brother John W. (now 20yrs) was living with Thos. J. MORRIS.

It is of interest to note that the sons of Thomas M. Carpenter were living with TANNERs.  There was a man called Samuel "Tanner" Carpenter living with wife Elizabeth in 1835 Randolph County Alabama in which Thomas M. Carpenter was also living in 1839.    I believe Samuel was a possible son of Thomas Carpenter (c.1780) and brother to Thomas M. , but have no other proof.

It is also of interest that the sons of Thomas M. Carpenter lived in the MORRIS household.  I have not seen anything to show a daughter of his married any Morris spouses.  "Perhaps" these were grandparents and Thomas Carpenter (c.1780) was married to a Morris?

THOMAS CARPENTER son of Rueben Sr.: b.1800/1 in  SC >GA >MS

According to information supplied by Terry Carpenter, this Thomas is believed to be the son of Reuben Carpenter Sr. of Edgefield SC.  He states this Thomas born circa 1800-1801 left GA and was in the Chickasaw MS census of 1840 & 1850.  According to Terry, this Thomas had a brother Reuben Jr. who went to Upshur, TX.

Children of Thomas son of Reuben:    Rebecca, Caroline, Lucinda & Timothy.

THOMAS CARPENTER son of John Carpenter:  b. Oct 1, 1801 SC > GA > AL

This Thomas was born about 1801 lived in Lincoln Co. GA and Coweta GA and according to descendant Greg Nabors, he was the probable son of John Carpenter. He married Lovenia "Lovie" Johnson.  Greg says this Thomas had a son named Thomas Washington Carpenter b. abt 1832 who went to Marion Co. AL.

REUBEN SR. AND THOMAS (the elder brothers) BOTH NAMED SONS REUBEN.

There was Reuben, of the 1840 Talladega County AL census who lived 2 doors from Charles K. Carpenter .  At first I thought this was Reuben the son of Reuben Sr.  However, most information found online shows that Reuben Sr's son, Reuben Jr., went to Ushur Co TX.  The Reuben listed in Alabama age 30-40 with a female age 20-30 is definitely not in TX.  Also, there is a smear under the male age group 50-60 so it is difficult to tell if the census taker intended for it to be marked or not.  But possibly this Reuben was age 50-60 with another male in the household age 30-40.  In the 1850 census this Reuben is still there, age 43 born SC which concurs to being the same Reuben age 30-40 in 1840 (not the smear mark). He has a wife Ellen born in GA and daughters Sarah J. and Mary A. R..  Talladega marriage records lists a Reuben Carpenter married Ellen Kendrick on Feb 10, 1836.  Another Reuben is listed in the 1850 Talladega census.  He is age 21 born GA with a wife Emily age 17 born GA and an infant son THOMAS age 1 born in Alabama.  He is Reuben L. Carpenter , son of Thomas (c.1780), who married Emily Garrett.

Note :  There were TN Carpenters in the 1840 census named William S & James J. Do not think part of our line.

We can see Charles K of 1840 is the same of the 1850.  It appears Reuben of the 1840 age 30-40 was probably head of household and lines up with the 1850 census.  This means one of the following:  (a) census taker made an ink mark and there was no elder male in the family (b) there was an elder male in the family who died or moved before 1850.  The relationship to Charles K Carpenter and that of the elder Reuben could be cousins or brothers (only 9 yrs between them).  Looking at Charles being born in GA and Reuben in SC makes me tend to lean toward cousins.  Since the younger Reuben L had records in GA and Reuben L Carpenter stated he was born GA, and he didn't marry until 1-21-1848 in AL  and was only married about two years then having the son Thomas in AL in 1839, I do not feel he was the son of the elder Reuben from SC.  However, I feel they were definitly related and he could be a nephew or cousin of the elder Reuben.  He might be his son but I think the younger Reuben went to AL when his father died about 1838.  Reuben the elder definitely did not show a younger male in his household in 1840.  Also, the younger Reuben L. buried his son in the Old Primitive Baptist Cemetery with the James Warren Carpenter family per this inscription:

Elijah Thomas Carpenter 4-27-1849 6 yrs 4-13-1855 Son of R.L. and Emily

It is also told that Reuben L & Emily donated the land for the cemetery.  As a child, my father was taken to this cemetery and told it was where his great grandpa was buried.  (My father being descendant of James Warren).   Reuben L. also had a son named John Lewis Carpenter.  "Perhaps" Reuben's middle name was Lewis?  Reuben L Carpenter died on June 21, 1863 in Shelbyville TN during the Civil War.  He still has descendants in Clay County AL (Clay became a county in 1866 after the 1850 census).

There was Reuben Carpenter, Jr. b. abt 1807, the son of Reuben Sr of Edgefield SC who was purported to have moved to Chickasaw MS according to several other researchers.

CONCLUSION:  I have not done any new research of late.  The persons I communicated with in 1999 may have new information by now.  We all know this is not an exact science but I hope I have made the logical choices based on what evidence exists today.  Please visit my family outline.

That forced me to move my gen files and update them. I am nowhere near done, but I did update and publish my Thomas Carpenter files. Actually, I am very proud of myself as this is the first time I dug out all the records I collected over the years and put them all together. Whew! Took days. I have, to my own satisfaction, proved Thomas M. Carpenter b.1810 GA and James Warren Carpenter b.1813 GA to be brothers. I have, to my own satisfaction, proved their father to be Thomas Carpenter c.1780 of the SC Edgefield Carpenter line. MY LINE:
My Carpenter line spent many years in Clay County Alabama.  JAMES WARREN CARPENTER b.1813 was my 3rd great grandpa.  His wife was SARAH ABIGAIL “SALLIE” HARLEN.  They moved from Henry Co GA to Alabama in 1848.  I have spent eleven years gathering records on this line.  Based on preponderance of the evidence I found, I believe my 4th great grandfather was THOMAS CARPENTER who lived in Henry County GA circa early 1800s.

EVIDENCE:
My 3rd great grandmother, Sallie [Harlen] Carpenter, lived to be 94 years old.  In her 91st year, she wrote a testimonial for the church.  In it she stated her mother was Judah WILKINS and her father was Zachariah HARLEN who died when she was 4 yrs old.  She said she married her husband, WARREN CARPENTER, in Henry County when she was 19 and consequently moved to Alabama in 1848.  That same year she named her baby boy Zachariah Thomas Carpenter which appears to be after each of the grandpas.

I found Thomas Carpenter listed in the 1820 Warren County census [Henry Co. wasn't formed yet] with wife, 4 sons born 1804-1820 and 2 daughters b. 1804-1816.  James Warren Carpenter was born 1813.

Pat Morgan-Lyons found documents that Sarah's father, Zachariah Harlen, was murdered in 1824 Greene Co, GA.  Sarah would have been about 4 yrs old per her testimonial

Richard O. Carpenter found Henry County Georgia court records showing Sallie's guardianship was bonded by: THOMAS CARPENTER and JOHN R. WILKINS in 1828.

I found Thomas Carpenter listed in the 1830 Henry County census with wife, 5 boys, 4 girls and a 60-70 yr old man.  One of his sons born before 1820 had moved out of the home making him have a total of SIX BOYS.  There was only 1 Thomas Carpenter in the census.

I found documents showing James Warren Carpenter was married in 1838  Henry County Georgia to SARAH HARLIN.

I found a WILLIAM WILKINS who married ELIZABETH CARPENTER in Henry Co GA, also in 1838 like James Warren Carpenter and Sarah Harlin.  I believe Elizabeth was a daughter of Thomas Carpenter and William was a relative of Sarah's mother, Judah (Wilkins) Harlen.

In 1833, the GA Telegraph News of Henry County shows tax liens on the property of:
Thomas M Carpenter  -  Zachariah Carpenter  -  & Thomas Carpenter in a FiFa suit over their 25 acres of land on which Thomas is living next to Reuben Turner, Elisha Rogers & John R. WILKINS.
I found Warren Carpenter listed in the 1840 Henry County census with wife and a daughter and another couple living in the home.

I found record that in 1844, Sarah & James Warren Carpenter sued John R. WILKINS (possibly for his Sarah's estate that John R. Wilkins controlled).

I found record that in 1848, Sarah & James Warren Carpenter moved to Alabama and in the Randolph County 1850 census they are living ""next door to Thomas M. Carpenter""  both Thomas M and Warren stated they were born in GA.  In addition, Warren & Sarah's land deed was notorized by William W. WILKINS (spouse of Elizabeth Carpenter).

Photos of Sarah [Harlin] Carpenter in the possession of the family.

BASED ON THE ABOVE AND EVIDENCE IN PART 2, I am convinced that Thomas Carpenter was the father of James Warren Carpenter.

PART 2

WAS THOMAS CARPENTER OF HENRY CO GA
related to
  EDGEFIELD SC CARPENTERS ?

An earlier research by Mrs. Ross on the Alabama families stated Thomas Carpenter's father was Reuben S. Carpenter of Edgefield SC.  However, I found some discrepancies and have made changes to my outline "excluding" the idea that Reuben was my Thomas's father.  However, Reuben Sr. of Edgefield did a son named Thomas born circa 1800.  I believe my Thomas to be the "brother" of John & Reuben Carpenters, born circa 1776-1785 and that their father was Unknown Carpenter and their mother was ABIGAIL JORDAN who married 2nd Thomas Moffettt.

According to a diary written 1884 by Josephine C. Robinson, Abigail Jordan and an unknown Carpenter (who died ) had three sons... John, Reuben & Thomas.  Abigail was a noblewoman and the Carpenters and Jordans were well off.  Abigail had lived in SC, moved to Lincoln Co. GA and remarried to Thomas Moffettt in GA.  Abigail and Thomas Moffettt had four sons, Thomas, Nathan, Jacob and James Moffettt.  Some researchers believe these Carpenter & Moffett brothers to be the children that lived in Henry County GA circa early 1800s.  Records show Thomas Carpenter witnessing a land transaction for Jordans as early as 1805.  There are other indications the Moffett and Carpenter families are connected as shown on Steve Martonak's website http://users.ticnet.com/shmartonak/Moffettt.htm   Steve was so gracious to contact me and share all his research with me.  These deeds are posted on his website showing the many interactions of Carpenters, Moffetts and Jordans:

**Reuben Carpenter is buying out his father's or his brother's (Thomas's) share in 1805.  This Reuben's descendants are probably the ones that  went to Chickasaw MS.

You can see they definitely knew each other.  And if you will notice the name Nathan Jackson, he was Abigail & Thomas Moffett's son in law who was witnessing the deed of the Carpenter boys.  He was the uncle of their half-aunt Margaret Peggy Moffettt Jackson.  My work presumes the three Carpenter boys, the Moffetts and the Jordans living in the same general area of Lincoln / Henry Counties in GA circa early 1800s, were related.  Rueben and Thomas Carpenter's descendants have continued using the names Thomas, Zachariah & Rueben through the current years.

Here are some more records and notes:

In 1803 -John, Rueben and Thomas CARPENTERS were listed in the GA Taxroll.

In 1805 -Henry, John and Thomas CARPENTERS were listed in the Lincoln Co. GA Land Lottery.

a)  Thomas Sr. and his brother Reuben Sr. each named sons Thomas and Reuben.  Thomas Sr.'s sons Thomas M. and Reuben L. both named sons Lewis and Thomas.

b)  There was a Zachariah Carpenter born c.1805 living in Henry County GA who is named in fi-fa suits with Thomas, Rueben L. & Thomas M Carpenters as either co-defendants or co-complaintaints.

I believe Zach was the son of Thomas.

d)  My grandfather told me that his brother, Zackie, was named for an ancestor who went to war and never returned.  That could have been his 3rd great grandpa Zachariah Harlen who we know was killed 1824 by White Caps but I tend to think it was Zachariah Carpenter of Henry Co born c.1805 as he is mentioned in records with Thomas Carpenter and disappears from Henry County about 1838. Then it appears the same Zac of Henry County is  living in Harris County GA in 1840-1850 who has a son named James Warren and a daughter named Abigail.  The son, James Warren Carpenter born c.1833 is living in Calhoun County AL in 1860 and has a son named ZACHARIAH.  He married Nancy Jane GARRETT, daughter of Elijah Garrett and sister of Emily Garrett who married Reuben L. Carpenter.  I believe James Warren (b.1833) and Reuben L (b.1828) to be cousins.  In 1854 Harris County Grand Lodge was listed a Zachariah Carpenter, by trade a tyler or tailor.  I have not found any more records yet of Zach b.1805 after 1854. I suspect he went to war in 1861-1865 and never returned.  However, he may have adopted his brother Thomas M. Carpenter's sons Lewis and Zachariah and moved to Harrison County Texas.

1911 Sallie (Harlen) Carpenter wrote an autobiography and testimony to her church which was published in the Primitive Baptist.  She stated she was 91 years old, her father died when she was about 4 while moving from Wilkes to Henry County.  Said her mother was Judah WILKINS and her father was Zachariah HARLEN.   She said she married WARREN CARPENTER when she was 19.  She stated they moved to AL in 1848.  They put their letters in the Bethlehem Baptist Church which was on the Georgia side of the state line though they physically lived on the Alabama side.  They finally settled within 2 miles of the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church in Clay County AL (where she was buried in 1914).  Stated she had 9 children leaving 266 descendants.  This was a touching and moving testimonial titled “The Peace.”

1998 the LIPHAM Family Bible was transcribed containing the descendants of THOMAS M. CARPENTER.

Armed with the above information and the Abigail Moffettt story and information from Terry Carpenter, Richard O. Carpenter, other cousins and researchers, I was able to put all the pieces together. I have made a time line of the records of these families (below).  Thanks to all who contributed !

THE RECORDS TIMELINE

1780's  :  The only Carpenter in the Reconstructed Georgia census is Baley (Bailey) Carpenter in Burke County.  This is consistent with the theory that our Carpenters were in South Carolina until Abigail's spouse died circa 1782.

1790 SC  :  Only 3 Carpenters are listed in what is left of the 1790 census of SC.  They are as follows:

Pendleton Dist:  BOSTEN CARPENTER born bef 1774, 2 males 1775-1790, 3 females.
Pendleton Dist:  WILLIAM CARPENTER born bef 1774, 1 male 1775-1790, 4 females.
Charleston Co:  JAMES CARPENTER    born bef 1774, 1 male 1775-1790, 2 females.

The man we are looking for would have 3 males in his home in 1790, so I eliminated these.  Our Reuben lived in Edgefield SC in 1800 so that may be where his family was from, but census records didn't make it.

1792 Land:  GA, LINCOLN, James Moffet of Wilkes Co to Thos Moffett, 250a in Wilkies on Wells Crk. Wit: JOHN CARPENTER, Sarah McClendal & Henry Ware.

1801 Land: GA, Lincoln, Thomas Carpenter witnesses Charles JORDAN land sale.  [pg 61][Deedbook D, 1803-1805]  Charles Jordan and Amey his wife to John Chancey Jordan (could this be Rev. John C. JORDAN buried in Clay Co. b. 1784 d.1866?).

1801 Land:  GA, Lincoln, Deed for 100 acres, part of 750 acres granted to Zachariah JORDAN 17 January 1787. It is on Cherokee Creek adjoining Thomas WADSWORTH, Elijah OFIELD, and TRIPLETT. Charles & Amey JORDAN witness

BASED ON PREPONDERANCE OF EVIDENCE, I BELIEVE THE FOLLOWING TO BE TRUE:

* THOMAS CARPENTER of Henry Co GA c.1785 was probably the son of Abigail Jordan & Mr. Carpenter.

* Thomas had brothers named Reuben & John Carpenter as well as Moffettt 1/2  brothers.

* Brother Reuben died in Edgefield County SC and some of his sons went to MS and on to TX.

****My father's DNA matches a descendant of the Reuben Carpenter who went to TX***

* Thomas had a total of "6" sons born between 1804 - 1830.  I believe 4 of them were:

ZACHARIAH Carpenter c.1805
JAMES WARREN Carpenter b. Jan 21, 1813
THOMAS M. Carpenter  b. Apr 23, 1810
REUBEN L. Carpenter b. Dec 14, 1828

He had 2 other sons.  One was born 1804-1816.  The other was born 1820-1825.  He may have had sons between the 1830 census and 1838.  He should have a son named John after his other brother.   I have considered whether "any or none" of the below could have been sons:
John B. Carpenter           c.1820 GA lived in Randolph Co AL in 1860.
Eli (Eleazer) Carpenter    c.1823 GA deeded land Randolph Co AL 1851.
William Henry Carpenter c.1825  ? died CSA 1861-65 buried TN.
William Carpenter            c.1830 GA living in Randolph AL 1850.

* Thomas had "4" daughters born 1810-1830.  I believe one of them to be:

                                   ELIZABETH Carpenter c.1820

Thomas Moffett was born circa 1760 in SC.  His father, James Moffett, had immigrated from Scotland; first living in SC and finally in Wilkes/Lincoln County GA.  Josephine C. Robinson's diary stated that James' son, soldier Thomas Moffett, married the widow Abigail Jordan Carpenter after the American Revolution ended.  Josephine went into a lot of detail about many descendants but I am only going to list Abigail's children briefly as they are half-siblings to our Carpenters.  These children were all born in Jasper Co Georgia where Thomas and Abigail had relocated and were subsequently buried.

Margaret “Peggy” Moffett circa 1784 m. Nathan W. Jackson
James Moffett circa 1785 m. Sarah “Sally” Bellamy
Jacob Moffett circa 1790 m. Sarah H. Saunders
Nathan Moffett circa 1790 m. Mary
Jane Moffett circa 1794 m. David Hunter
Elizabeth Moffett circa 1796 m. Elijah Boynton

NOTE-1:  Nathan Moffett moved to Talladega Co AL and lived near Thomas Carpenter's son Reuben L. Carpenter b.1828.

NOTE-2:  Margaret's spouse was a JACKSON.  When Thomas Carpenter's son Thomas M. Carpenter died, a Thomas JACKSON was administrator.  I am unaware of any relationship between Margaret Moffett Jackson and Thomas Jackson but trying to find one.

BURIALS:  Josephine C. Robinson's diary states that Thomas Moffett died age 59, Abigail Jordan Carpenter Moffett died Nov 4, 1822 and were both buried in a Baptist Church yard in Jasper Co GA.

After that, Reuben lived in EDGEFIELD, Thomas went to HENRY GA and John stayed in LINCOLN GA until at least 1820.
...
**OF INTEREST !! In 1794 GA, WARREN CO, Thomas Carpenter was listed in GRAY's Dist . (Reuben's daughter married a James Gray). However, Thomas was born at earliest 1775 which means he was only 19 when taxed. There was also a JOSEPH CARPENTER on same page** Abigail was already married married to Moffett by 1794 but Joseph may have been a brother or grandfather of her unknown husband.

*Note Mary Carpenter is "selling" her interest as probable wife of Thomas.

MARY* CARPENTER  also signs as a grantor and by mark.  Witnessed: Nathan JACKSON and Edward Hardy. Registered March 4, 1806. Pgs 43-4.  Mary was giving up her right to the land and thus was probably Thomas's wife, mother or sister.

1810 Census:  GA, Lincoln Co. Capt Jordan Leverett's District 1.  JOHN CARPENTER lived next to  JOHN C. JORDAN. " Also there was  an Edward MORGAN in Dist 3 and a John MORGAN is Dist 5.

Thanks to Robert Sprayberry for transcription.
1923 Record:  The Lineville Headlight printed this announcement: John L. Carpenter married Mary J. Hamlin on 11 Nov 1873 in Clay Co, AL recently celebrated their 50th wedding Anniversary. He was the son of REUBEN CARPENTER, an early settler of Alabama who was killed on the battlefield while
serving with the CSA.

1928 Record:  The family of Mary Jamima Hamlin and John Lewis Carpenter are all identified in The Ashland Progress while reporting on Mary & John's 55th wedding anniversary.

1998 Record:  The Thomas "M." Carpenter b.1810 lineage is confirmed by the Thomas Newton LIPHAM Family Bible record.  The family Bible of Lucinda (Carpenter) LIPHAM transcribed by a HALPIN descendant, lists Thomas M. Carpenter's wife as Lucinda BARROW and also supplies names, birth and death records of the family.  Some of the Liphams lived in Randolph Co AL and were still living in the area of the 1880  census and 1912 when Simon Lipham wrote Sallie Carpenter.

* Thomas had a total of "6" sons born between 1804 - 1830.  I believe 4 of them were:

Subject: CORRECTION to Unknown sons of Carpenter
HERE IS HOW I ARRIVED AT THIS CONCLUSION:
...     ...
THOMAS - 1 Unknown Son
Based on the 1820 Warren census, Thomas had 4 boys & 2 girls.
1820 GA, WARREN, Thos 1775-1794, Spouse 1775-1794, Boy 1804-1816, ZACH Boy 1804-1816, THOS M Girl 1804-1816, ELIZ Boy 1810-1820, JAS WARREN Boy 1810-1820, ???? Girl 1810-1820 ABIGAIL [4-boys, 2-girls].
Based on the 1830 Henry Co census, Thomas had 5 boys & 4 girls with the same unknown boy born 1815-1820.
So we are looking for 1 son born in GEORGIA.
Son b. 1815-1820 GA possible names: John, Starling
