William N. Carpenter was born ca 1835/36 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
William was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census, and was with them in 1850.
William married Mary Wise on 1 Apr 1862 in Mitchell Co, NC. However, this date seems to contradict the fact that they already appeared to be married, and together on the 1860 census. It is possible that he was married to another woman named Mary, prior to Mary Wise. She was listed as "Mrs" on the marriage record, possibly indicating she was widowed from a Mr. Wise.
There was a curious marriage record in Burke County in 1860. On 6 Mar 1860, a "William Carpenter" obtained a marriage bond in Burke County to marry "Lousind Stamy". That is probably a badly misspelled "Lucinda", or possibly "Louisa". If her name was also "Mary", then that may be who is with William on the 1860 census. They did appear to be newlyweds, and to add to this, William's sister Sophia Carpenter married George Stamey in 1859 Yancey County. This could be a case of two siblings marrying two other siblings.
Regarding the Stamy / Stamey family, there were none in Yancey County in 1850, but the closest was in neighboring Caldwell County and several in neighboring Burke. None of those had a daughter "Mary" or "Lucinda" or anything close. Nor a son George. The next nearest ones were in Lincoln and Haywood County. None of those matched up either.
William and Mary were listed on the 1860 census in Yancey County, next to his parents.

Assuming that "Mary" of 1860 is a different person than "Mrs. Mary Wise" who William married in 1862, then that means the first Mary died before 1862.Mary Wise Carpenter also apparently died in the 1860's in Mitchell County. I'm not at all sure if I have the spouses sorted out properly or not, so keep that in mind. One of the Mary's (assuming they are different people) was the mother of Thomas Carpenter, born ca 1862.
William was back home with his parents for the 1870 census. He had his young son Thomas living with him.

William apparently married his cousin Margaret Elizabeth Carpenter in the 1870/73 timeframe. She was a child of Samuel Carpenter.
