LT. BERNHARD(T)/BERNARD ZIMMERMAN was
the progenitor of a family who became widely established
in Pine Grove, Wayne, and Washington Townships,
Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Bernhardt/Bernard
Zimmerman (1744/45 -1818) was married ca 1768 to Maria
Eva Gebhardt ( 1748- I 8 I 8), daughter of Phiilip Gebhardt
and Anna Margaretha Masseau/Massa of Tulpeliocken
Township, Lancaster County (now Berks County), Pennsylvania.
Bernard's will and estate papers are in the Register
of Wills, Schuylkill County Courrhouse. His will is
filed in Will Book #1, p. 2l , drawn up on December 18,
I 8 I 7, and filed January 31l, I 8 1 8. He had requesred burial
at the "new church in Pine Grove." His wife is not named.
Witnesses were: Johan Adam Lingel and Jacob Christ.

On February 21, 1818, an inventory and appraisement
of Bernhard Zimmerman's estate was submitted by
Jacob Christ and Frederick Schnoke. The value of the estate
amounted to $3,279.95, including amounts due from
Phillip Zimmerman, Bernhard Zimmerman, Henry
Zimmerman, Peter Zimmerman, Jacob Zimmerman and
John Zimmerman.
On March 26, 1823, a second account filed by
Henry Zimmerman and Phillip Zimmerman, valued the
estate at $3,279.03,Iess expenses of $2,639.81. This left
a balance of $639.22. Distribution was made to rhe
following heirs:
l. John Hand and wif'e Margaretha
2. Bernhard Zimmerman, Jr.
3. Phillip Keyer and wif'e, Eva
4. Jacob Hubler in trust for his children
5. Henry Zimmerman
6. Peter Zimmerman
7. Jacob Zimmerman

On April 15, 1845, Phillip Zimmerman of Pine Grove
Township died.
On May 9, 1845, I found a renunciation of widow
Elizabeth Zimmerman and sons, John Zimmerman, peter
Zimmerman, and Henry Zimmerman. In the inventory and
appraisement by John Strin-rpfler and Jacob Christ the
value of the estate totaled $860.55.
On June 14, 1845, a vendue list was filed for a sale
held on May 23, 1845. The value of goods sold totaled
$107.24. Among the buyers were Peter Zimmerrnan, Henry
Zimmerman, the widow Zimmerman, and Henry Zimmerman
(son of John Zimmerman). Numerous books, pictures,
weaver tools, ar.rd a surveying book were just a f'ew of the
items sold at auction-
On January 24, 1848, an account was filed by
Samuel Guss, with the valuc of thc estatc amounting to
$1,595.76, less expenses of $ 1,140.52, which left a
$144.76 balance due to the accountant from the heirs. Income
of the estate included amounts received from the sale
of real estate as follows:
1. one lot sold to John Zimmerman for $l0l
2. one piece of land sold to Joseph Brubaker,
Joseph Lengel, Henry Hubler and M. Minnich
for $40
3. one piece of land sold to Jacob Heberling for
$3s
4. one piece and lot sold to Henry Zimmerman

5. one tract of land sold to Henry Heil for $ 110
6. one tract of land sold to Jacob Heberling fbr
$40
7. one tract of land sold to Peter Filbert for $35
8. interest in land (not specified) sold to Jacob
Snyder for $17.75
The accountant added interest in the coal company
of Bonawitz, March, not included in the inventory and
valued at $66.46. Paymenrs were made to phillip
Zimmerman, John Zimmerman, Anna Zimmerman. William
Zimmerman, and Henry Zimmerman.
On January 8, 1883, a petition of William
Zimmerman, nephew of Phillip Zimmerman, deceased,
listed the following heirs (Phillip Zimmerman's brothers
and sisters):

Bernhardt/Bernhart was the son of Johannes Peter and Ann Bricker Zimmerman. He was born in Cocalico, Berks Co., PA. Siblings were Elizabeth, Peter and Margaretha. Bernhardt was wed to Maria Eva Gebhardt about 1768 at Rehrersburg, Berks Co., PA. She was born November 3, 1748 to Philip Gebhardt and wife in Tulpehocken, Berks Co., PA.
They became the parents of Eight children: Anna Margaretha (John Hand), Johannes (Catherine Buchler), Bernhardt (Elizabeth Maria Holm or Hohn), Maria Eva (Philip Keiser), Heinrich (Eva Brenner), Magdelana Elizabeth (Johannes Jacob Hubler), Peter (Catherine Zerby) and Eva (Died Young), and George Philip Zimmerman (Question this child as Maria would have ben 46 yrs old) (Wife Elizabeth Ulrich). Bernhardt served in the Revolutionary War - Two different campaigns. He served with the 6th Battalion, 5th Co., in Captain Michael Bretz's Co. under Col. Henry Spycher. Also the 2nd Battalion, 5th Co., under Capt. Philip Hedrich. In 1783 - Bernhardt was a member of the Building Committee of the St. Jacob's White Church - one of the oldest in the state of Pennsylvania. Son-in-Law Philip Keiser was the first burial in the graveyard. Daughter Maria Eva married Philip Keiser - Their Daughter - Margaret was wed to Henry Eckler - Their Son - John Franklin Eckler was my Great Grandfather. Maria Eva Gebhardt/Gebhart was born to Johannes George Philip and Anna Margaretha Jeanne Massa/Massau Gebhart - Natives of Rheinland-Phaltz, Germany. Among her siblings were Johannes, Anna Maria Barbara, Jonnanes Heinrich, Johannes Peter, and Valentine Gebhart. Maria Eva was wed to Bernhart/Bernhardt Zimmerman in 1768 at Altalaha Rehrersburgh, Berks Co., PA. - They became the parents of Anna Margaretha (John Hand), Johannes (Catherine Elizabeth Buchler), Bernhardt/Bernhart,II (Elizabeth Maria Hohn), Maria Eva (Philip Keiser), Magdelena (Johannes Jacob Hubler), Heinrich (Eva Brenner), Peter (Catherine Zerbe), Jacob (Barbara Buchler) and Philip George Zimmerman (Elizabeth Ulrich). Capt. Bernhart Zimmerman - Revolutionary War Patriot - passed away on January 31, 1818 - Maria Eva passed away on November 3, 1818. They are interred at Gunkles Old Cemetery - Across the road from St. Peters Lutheran Church. A memorial has been erected to honor all who served in the Revolutionary War. Few stones remain - Those that are there are very hard to read and in German script. Hi Autumn, I think I know a little more about this Richard Carpenter. I think he was Richard Hezekiah Carpenter, born June 3, 1858. I believe him to be the son of Alexander L Carpenter, who is buried in Pisgah Cemetery in Avery Co., North Carolina, and Kesiah Vance

Matilda Carpenter and Richard Carpenter were the parents of Arbie Carpenter and Edward McCoy Carpenter.

Another daughter of Matilda and Richard was Nellie Carpenter Taylor.

In a 1930 Census Altamont, Avery Co., N.C., Matilda Carpenter, age 68, is a widow; she is living with her son, "Ed" Edward Carpenter, daughter in law, Pansy, and thier family. The census stated Matilda was age 15 when she first got married.

On October 26, 1944, Banner Elk, Avery County, N.C., Matilda Dixon Carpenter, a widow, died at the age of 82.
