Bio: RICHARD BENDER CARPENTER, SR., 93, of Hancock, Md., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md. Born Aug. 21, 1924, in Maugansville, Md., he was the son of the late Paul “Doc” and Alice Carpenter, and the widower of Alma (Bernhard) Dyer Carpenter.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War 11. Over the years, he worked at Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown; and Morgan County Schools in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Washington County Schools in Hancock, Md., as a custodian and bus driver. After his retirement, Richard enjoyed his yard work, his plants and taking care of his fish. He was a member of the American Legion Post 26 in Hancock and the James W. Bowers Masonic Lodge 173 in Hancock.He is survived by his children, James Carpenter Sr., Edwin “Dean” Carpenter, John Dyer, Betty Foster and Janet Truax, and Ina Potter; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by a son, Richard B. Carpenter Jr.; brothers, Charlie, Paul “Willy” and Donnie Carpenter; and sister, Nancy Hahn.Funeral services will be held at the Grove Funeral Home, Hancock. Bio: Hancock, Maryland Alma G. Carpenter, age 93, of Hancock, died on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at her home. Born February 12, 1922, in Gettysburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Franklin B. and Bertha Brady Bernhard, and the wife of Richard B. Carpenter, of Hancock. She was a Christian. She was retired from Londontown Mfg. Corp. in Hancock, where she worked as a seamstress. Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Betty Foster and Janet Truax, both of Hagerstown, Md., and Ina Potter, of Hancock; one son, John Dyer, of Hagerstown, Md.; two sisters, Vivian Killette, of Land O Lakes, Fl. and Mary Hanks, of McConnellsburg, Pa.; and seven grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two grandsons, David Potter, and Matthew Truax and an infant daughter Joyce Dyer, a brother Melvin Bernhard and a sister Virginia Mellott. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock. Burial will follow in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park cemetery, 17636 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, Md.
