Notes

3715. James Addison Carpenter

COMMENT:
Taken from the Mowrey book, Vol. II:  Many  Carpenter researchers  believe
that James Addison was a son of Old  Jeremiah  after 1830, and tradition says
that his demise occurred in 1832. All available information indicates that
James Addison was born circa 1834/1835. Logic dictates that he would probably
be the son of John S. Carpenter. He is very likely the James who is missing in
the 1860 Census.

NOTE:
Taken from Mowrey book, Vol. II:  James Addison Carpenter married circa 1853
Rosanna Coger (born in June  of 1835 and died 20 December 1903, daughter of
Benjamin and Mary (Hosey) Coger and granddaughter of Peter and Mary (McElwain)
Coger and John and Mary (Cool)  Hosey- two of the oldest families in Braxton
County.

In the Mowrey book, page 171, Vol. III the following is shown:  James
Carpenter, (born 17 May 1835, d: 14 Jan 1914) married Sarah Jane Grady (who was
born 15 September 1837, died 29 July 1918),on  14 March 1853, James was the son
of John S. and Mary Judith (Miller) Carpenter).

This entry does not match earlier records as shown above.  It may be that the
confusion as to exactly who or which James Carpenter married Rossana Coger,
or  Sarah Grady  is shown in the first paragraph of these notes.  In the
entering of the Mowrey book I have given precident of that information to the
information contained in the orginal record, however accurate it may be.  In
this case I am going to add a marriage for James, even though the marriage
dates are obvisouly incorrect.  It will tie the families together for  record
keeping, and won't leave Sarah Jane Grady  in limbo.  <--------- !!!

Sarah Jane Grady

COMMENT:
In
this case I am going to add a marriage for James, even though the marriage
dates are obviously incorrect.  It will tie the families together for  record
keeping, and won't leave Sarah Jane Grady in limbo. (per John E. Proctor
12/1999) To complete this issue is the entry in the orginal record of a
Sarah Jane Grady, with the  same birth date, who is shown to be married to
Elijah Carpenter.  The text from the Mowrey book makes the status of Sarah Jane
suspect.  To whom was she married?  See text below taken from page 182 of the
Mowrey book.  From the information in the Mowrey book I am unable to correctly
determine the marriages of Sarah Jane, or if in fact we are dealing with two
individuals.  I rather suspect that the husbands of Sarah Jane are mixed up.

NOTE:
Jerome R.S. Mowrey, who married Malinda Carpenter, eldest daughter of  Elijah
and Sarah Jane Grady),
Carpenter, is probably the best known of this family-  He
supposedly served in both the Union and Confederate Armies at one time or
another during the Civil War and escaped from Andersonville near the end of the
war. OR ... As a Seventh Day Adventist Minister, he travelled back and forth
between southern  Ohio and the Shenandoah Valley preaching the gospel, healing
the sick and afflicted  and establishing churches. He once burst into a Baptist
Church service preaching  Revelations, was arrested for disturbing a public
meeting and later successfully  defended himself by serving as his own attorney
at his subsequent trial. His power of  persuasion was so great that the jury
deliberated less than half an hour before  returning a unanimous verdict to
acquit him of all charges.

3716. Harvey Henson Carpenter

Harvey Henson (18) Carpenter was born around 1840 and married Mary  Jane
McCort 20 December 1860 in Braxton County. Mary Jane was born circa 1840,
daughter of Andrew and Jane (maiden name undiscovered) McCort.

Hanson Carpenter in the 1870 Webster County census is identified as Harvey
Carpenter in the 1880 Webster enumeration by comparing his wife and children.
The  only other children of John S. and Sydney (Cowger) Carpenter for whom
information  has been found are Emeline who married James McCourt, Cain who
married Corella McCourt and Love who married Luverna (Maiden Name Unknown).
(Taken from the Mowrey book)

In another part of the Mowrey book there are 11 children listed for John S.
and Sydney.

CENSUS: 1850 US Census - with father. See father's notes.  Listed as Hanson age 10.

3718. Emaline Carpenter

Emaline (18) Carpenter was born around 1847 and married James J.
McCort circa 1866 in Braxton County West Virginia. James was born circa 1840,
son of John B. and Mary (Burns) McCort.

There was two Emaline Carpenters - one generation apart.  Which one married
James J. McCort is the question.  It may be strange but did the younger one
marry her cousin named James A. McCourt?

CENSUS: 1850 US Census - with father. See father's notes.  Listed as Emaline, age 1.
CENSUS: 1860 US Census - with father and step-mother. Listed as Emeline, age 13.

3728. Nancy Tanner

Roane County VA became Roane County WV in 1861.
Nancy Tanner was born circa 1823 and married William Brannon Starcher.
Roane County VA became Roane County WV in 1861.

PARENT: Jesse "Ike" or Jesse "Buffalo" Tanner?  The same person?

William Brandon Starcher

Children of Jesse Tanner Jr., of Jesse Tanner Sr., of Samuel Tanner/Sudna
Elizabeth (16) Carpenter.  (This is taken from page 96 of the Tanner book.  It
appears that there is confusion in the families of Jesse "Buffalo" and Jessie
"Ike" Tanner and their children, as well as who they married.  In entering this
information I, John Proctor, am unable to determine which is accurate, so am
going by the consistancy of the Mowrey Book, even though it may be inaccurate.
All of the children given in the orginal record for this family are  shown  in
the Mowrey book, however there are 3 additional children in the orginal record,
Jesse, Henry and Rebecca Tanner, none of these children are shown in the Mowrey
book,  however I am leaving them in the family.
Jesse Tanner Jr. was born in February of 1825, died 1907 and married  Sarah
Jane Greathouse 4 November 1845.

3730. Mary Tanner

This marriage continues the confusion between ""Buffalo" Tanner (RIN 39221)
and "Ike" Tanner  (RIN 28455)  The orginal record had Mary in the family of
Buffalo, but the Mowrey book had her in the "Ike" family.  I have continued to
follow the Mowrey book and changed Mary to that family.  The reference is
found on page 98 of the Mowrey book.  Then under presure I had to switch her
back.

Mary Tanner was born about 1826 and married Isaac Starcher 10 June 1846.
Children of Mary Tanner, of Jesse Tanner Sr., of Samuel Tanner/Sudna
Carpenter (16).

3732. William Tanner

William Tanner was born around 1834 and married 1st 8 March 1858 Isobel
Booher (daughter of John and Elizabeth Booher) 2nd 22 September 1865 Hannah
Sherman (daughter of Abraham and Rebecca Sherman) and 3rd 22 September1867
Malissa (Booher) Starcher, widow).

William was married first to Isabel (_________) they appear on the 1860
census along with children Martha age 5 & Alex age 2. William married second
on 22 Jan 1865 to Hannah Sherman in Roane Co. He was age 29, she age 21.
William married a third time in ,Calhoun,WV. 22 Sept 1867 to Melissa Booker
Starcher, d/o Jacob & Nancy Booker. William was a Confederate
soldier during the Civil War.  He served in Co. G. 60th Va. Inf. CSA.

This marriage continues the confusion between ""Buffalo" Tanner (RIN 39221)
and "Ike" Tanner  (RIN 28455)  The orginal record had William in the family of
Buffalo, but the Mowrey book had him in the "Ike" family.  I have continued to
follow the Mowrey book and changed William to that family.  The reference is
found on page 98 of the Mowrey book.  Then under presure I had to switch him
back.

information other than their birth years.

3736. Abraham Brooks

(daughter of Robert and Rachel (Perrine) Green).
