From the Stanly  Herald - 07/17/1923
Old Veteran 80 Years Old Run Down by Auto, Sunday
A most deplorable accident happened on Sunday afternoon near the Efird Graded
Scholl building in West Ablemarle when an auotmobile driven by Miss Mary
Milton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Milton of Eastern Stanly, ran down Mr Allen
Carpenter of this
place, an old Confederate Veteran about eighty years old, inflicting injuries
which resulted in his death shortly after noon today. Medical aid was summoned
as quickly as possible after the accident and everything possible was done for
thinjured man's
relief. One of his legs was completely crushed and one arm sustained a badly
shattered bone. Mr Carpenter was also injured internally aand sustained several
bad bruises about his face. From the beginning Dr. C.M.Lentz who attended Mr.
Carpenter, held
out very little encouragement for his recovery but the olf veteran was a better
fighter in his last fight than his physician expected, holding ht "Grim Reaper"
at bay for nearly 48 hours before the end came.
Just how the accident happened no one seems to be able to tell. Another young
lady was riding with Miss Morton at the time of the occurence and it is
understood that they both claim the deplorable crash was entirely unavoidable.
Near the point where
the deplorable crash came the street which is the one used for main travel from
Albemarle to Saulsbury, is intersected by another street running dowwn from in
front of Efird Graded School and the embankment is so high that travelers on
either of these
streets cannot see cars on the other until within a very few feet of each other.
It is reported however, that witnesses will be produced  tending to show some
degree of recklessness of the driver of the automobile on this occasion. At any
rate circumstances are such as to lead the officers of the law to give the
matter a thorough
investigation. A warrant has been issued against Miss Morton and she has been
placed under bond of $1,000 which, since the death of Mr. Carpenter, will
possibly be increased to a larger amount. She will be given a preliminary
hearing possibly one day
this week. The young lady will no doubt be required to defend herself against a
charge of manslaughter.
As we go to press no arrangements have been made as to the funeral servives,
which will probably be held sometime tomorrow.

The ninety-five volunteers who enlisted at Albemarle July 29, 1861, adopted .the rather impudent nickname "Stanly, Yankee Hunters" and included among their number the subject  of this image, Private Allen Carpenter (born March 1841).  The "Yankee Hunters" traveled to Camp Fisher, Near High Point, and in September became Company D, 28th Regiment, N.C. Troops. In March 1862 the 28th North Carolina joined the brigade commanded by General L. 0 Bryan Branch (7th, 18th. 28th, 33rd, and 37th North Carolina) and as part of that command served three years with the Army of Northern Virginia. Engaged on virtually every battlefield of Lee's army from Hanover Court House to Appomattox Court House, Branch's regiments (commanded after his death at Sharpsburg by General James H. Lane) probably sustained the greatest loss from battle and disease of any brigade in the army. (Mortality in the five Tar Heel regiments exceeded thirty-three hundred men, including 710 from the 28th North Carolina.)
Despite those horrendous casualties, Allen Carpenter's military records disclose few details: All surviving muster rolls of his company report him as present or accounted for, and he surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. (Muster rolls for the "Yankee Hunters" are missing for a large part of the war, including January 1863-August 1864, however, and it is possible that Carpenter suffered a wound or serious illness that was not recorded on a subsequent roll.)
In later years Carpenter spoke little of his war experiences but did recount one shattering incident. During the Pettigrew-Pickett Charge at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, the 28th North Carolina, having advanced near the Federal lines on Cemetery Ridge, retreated. As the survivors fell back, covering the same ground over which they had moved forward, the dead and wounded lay so thick that they could not walk on the ground. Glancing down, Carpenter was horrified to find himself standing on the dead body of his younger brother, Private Churchwell Carpenter.
On July 10, 1923, Allen Carpenter was struck and run over by an automobile near Albemarle. Suffering from internal injuries, as well as a crushed arm and leg, he died on July 15.
Carpenter, clad in a dark sack coat and light-colored forage cap, is shown holding a D-guard bowie knife and a Smith & Wesson "Model No. 1" rimfire revolver, caliber .22. (Nothing in this image indicates where it was made or the identity of the photographer, but one can speculate that the photographer may have been Private W. B. Morton of the "Yankee Hunters," who listed his occupation as "daguerran artist" when he enlisted the same day as Carpenter. Morton died of pneumonia and diarrhea on January 30, 1862).

Subject: Re: Limestone Carps #1
First thing I see is this error:
4) Albert L. Carpenter-73496 of
Allen Richardson Carpenter-73481 of
Thomas J. Carpenter-73418 of
Simeon Carpenter-73148 of
John Carpenter-5351 b. abt 1764 Nash, NC M. abt 1790 , Greene, AL ****d. 1824 Newman,, GA*** Spouses: Elizabeth UpChurch, Mary ? and Mary Lee ?. AND way to many children!!! of Thomas “Jack” Carpenter-5337 b. 1740 Botetourt, VA d. 6 Aug 1803 ,, NC - See Group 13.

This line was supposed to be members of Group 2, but ...
Genetically tested descendants of Thomas "Jack" Carpenter-5337 are in Group 13 and Group 16. We do not know if this was an adoption situation or what. This line went from VA through Nash County, NC, to Greene County, AL (some alternating between NC & AL and one dying in Newman, GA - note this last one wrong - see below)) then Albert born in LA before winding up in TX.
Someone got that all messed up. This was one of those "somebody said" and everyone copied it, including me at one point. However, now we know the John who died 1824 in Newman, COWETA, GA was John Carpenter the son of Abigail Jordan. He was definitely not the John of NC. Anson Co NC had both an Allen & a Thomas Carpenter listed in 1840 Anson Co but that Thomas was still there in 1860.

There was also a Thomas Carpenter in Wake Co NC in 1840 that was of right age to be Allen's father. Some folks on Ancestry show Simeon of Franklin Co NC as his father but no one has any sources. Thomas was in Sumter Co AL by 1850 where Allen b.1832 is in household. Then Allen is found in MS then LA with son Albert. Then Albert is found in Limestone. So, the latter part was pretty simple to piece together.

Here is what I show for the Greene Co AL Carpenters (Sumter is next to Greene, Montgomery & Washington. BLM shows no old deeds for Carpenters in Sumter):

1. Jubal, Benjamin & Churchwell Carpenters "all" deeded Greene Co in 1823. Records show them born in NC.
2. John Carpenter deeded land in Greene Co in 1828 & 1831 which is hard to do if he died in 1824. He is said to have married Elizabeth Upchurch.
John is said to be older than the other 3 and presumably their father.
John is said to be the son of Thomas Jack Carpenter. This info from others, I've not researched it.
3. Thomas Jack Carpenter d.circa 1803 in Nash Co NC.
4. I found the following land patents for Carpenters in 1830s Greene Co AL:
SIMEON (1830 1837) THOMAS (1834 1837) BENJAMIN (1835) CHURCHWELL M. (1832 1833)
FURNEY L. (1833 1834) JOHN R. (1834) JOHN (1831 1837) JUBAL Jubill? (1837)
KENNITH (1837) PHILLIP (1837) LEE (1834) LEROY (1837)
and SHADRACH (1834)

Thomas Carpenter (1811 or Feb 1908) might be the one listed in the 1830 Greene Co AL census (of right age with a wife and one young daughter). His son Allen stated he was born in AL so Thomas had to be there by 1832.

The Thomas in question (1811 - Feb 1809) was in Sumter in 1850 with Allen in hshold and then still in Sumter Co in 1860 and Allen was not (Allen was in Lauderdale MS). So it is very possible that Allen (1832) 's father Thomas (1811) was of the Greene Co Carpenter line. But if Thomas's father was John of Greene Co, his father did not die in 1824 GA. John of Greene Co was alive in the 1830 census, age 60-69.

If you want a descendant of Albert, you might try contacting the owner of this tree:

The screen name is jackiepassey40 and has lots of family details.
However, I don't think this person is related to Group 16. As noted in my previous email, I think Albert descends from the Greene Co AL Carpenters who were all from NC.
