NEWSPAPER:
DOCTOR SAVES MAN'S LIMB BY. BAKING AND FREEZING
By Associated Press, New York, NY
May 6, 1908
Policeman Coles Carpenter , while stepping out of a car last July, Policeman Coles Carpenter fell on a rusty nail, wounding his right leg. Mortification set in and last December that amputation was necessary.
After he had been told by experinced Surgeon's that his leg must be amputated and that even then his life might not be spared Policeman Coles Carpenter is about again on crutches and will soon be able to use both his limbs as well as ever. A priest had been summoned to administer the last rites of the church to Carpenter. before an operation when Dr. Raymond Sullivan. a young Intern at St. Mary's Hospital. said he thought he could save both life and limb. By alternately baking the leg, which had been poisoned by a rusty nail, to a heat of 200 degrees and then plunging it Into a freezing ammonia tank, the blood was driven out, carrying the impurities along with it and halting the mortification. which had set in. Physicians who were 'called into the case said that the policeman undoubtedly owed not only saving of his limb, but his life to the young intern.

GRAVE:  Excerpt from E-MAIL below.
... we have in fact located the graves of Louisa (the wife of Erastus 3749), his son Erastus 5913 and his wife Maria, all of whom are buried in a "Carpenter" plot in the New English Reformed Church in Ridgefield, New Jersey. There are other Carpenters buried there and I will reterive those records when I visit next. However, we do not yet know where Erastus 3749 is buried. Apparently, the plots were bought by Erastus 5913 (the son of Erastus 3749) in or about 1906 when Louisa passed and she was the first to be buried there with a headstone bearing he Carpenter name which simply identifies her as Grandm

Subject: Carpenter Family History
Greetings. I am the grandson of Louise Maas who was born Louise Carpenter in 1901. She was one of five of the daughters of Erastus Carpenter (my great grandfather) and his wife Maria Carpenter (maiden name Neuscheler). They also had a son Herbert Carpenter, all of which is contained in the 1910 Census for the Town of West New York in Hudson County New Jersey. My Great grandfather Erastus was the son of Erastus R. Carpenter who is identified on your website of descendants of William Carpenter of Providence as No. 3749 in the Eighth Generation which lists the same census material in the notes as I have been able to locate. You have him listed as marrying Louisa "Shelf" which is accurate but in all liklihood her maiden name was actually "Schelpf" which is consistent with the name of Antinette "Shelpf" (more likely correctly spelled "Schelpf") as reflected on the 1870 Census who it would seem is the younger sister of Louisa. In addition, Erastus and Louisa owned an establishment (hotel/saloon) in Guttenberg, New jersey known as Jennie Shelp's Cottage (I hav a print of an old advertisement) which leads me to further believe the actual name was Schelpf which is consistent with both of Louisa's parents being born in Germany as reflected on the 1880 Census for them (both Shelf and Shelp would seem to be "Americanized" versions of Schelpf).
In any event, your work has confirmed what my mother had always told us about our roots in America going back to Plymouth as while our Carpenter name is that of William of Providence, his son married the daughter of William of Rehoboth. What spurred us to finally do some "digging" (no pun intended) was my aunt (who with my mother is one of the 2 daughters of Louise Maas) was not doing so well so we decided to locate the graves we could and go from there before we lost another memory of the past. In that regard, we have in fact located the graves of Louisa (the wife of Erastus 3749), his son Erastus 5913 and his wife Maria, all of whom are buried in a "Carpenter" plot in the New English Reformed Church in Ridgefield, New Jersey. There are other Carpenters buried there and I will reterive those records when I visit next. However, we do not yet know where Erastus 3749 is buried. We know he died in 1885 (apparently after falling down some stairs according to a newspaper article) and that he may have been the first mayor of Hudson City, New Jersey which was previously known as Hudson Town and ultimately became part of what is now Jersey City in 1870. Apparently, the plots were bought by Erastus 5913 (the son of Erastus 3749) in or about 1906 when Louisa passed and she was the first to be buried there with a headstone bearing he Carpenter name which simply identifies her as Grandma (according to the 1910 census, at the time of Louisa's death in 1906, Erastus and Maria had five childtren, Mary (age 15), Henrietta or "Etta" (age 13), Ross (age 12), Herbert (age 8) and my grandmother Louise (age 5). They ultimately had another daughter Viola who is buried there with her husband Nicholas Simeone and they had 2 boys Roger and Richard.
We have some work to do on finding Erastus 3749 but I will be back to you with any findings I make. If you would like some of the printouts of the information I have gathered thus far, let me know and I will be happy to image and send them.
Fascinating stuff.

Hi John. Not sure of the status of the carpenter cousins project but my great grandfather was Erastus Carpenter (5913 in the list of descendants of William Carpenter of Providence) who was the son of Erastus R. Carpenter (3749 in the list). Your list ends there. Erastus (my great grandfather) married Maria Neuschler and they had six daughters: Henrietta (Etta), Ross, Sadie, Rae, Louise and Viola and two sons Erastus who died within a year of being born and Herbert who was born in 1898. Louise was my grandmother and died before I was born. Her daughter was my mother Viola who married George D. Sodini. They had three children, George Thomas Sodini, Lynn Ann Sodini and me. My mother died in 1997. I am married to Kathleen M. Sodini (maiden name Riley) and we have three sons, Alexander, Andrew and Arick.
I would be interested in adding to the project and have other information on other descendants of Erastus 5913. What do you need from me to assist?
