10619. Theron Wayne "Theron" Judd
Theron died in a plane crash. Per the article in the newspaper "In Geneva, NY. Airman Basic Kenneth W. Spencer, a trainee at Sampson Air Force Base, said the passengers were his parents and fiance. He said the plane, which left for Wayne Indiana at about 10 am October 2, 1954 had been scheduled to land at the scenic Erie Park, a small field near the Geneva airport. Friends of the Spencers here said that they had talked of taking a regularly scheduled commercial flight to visit their son, but evidently changed their minds and chartered the Rev. Mr. Judds plane for the trip."
The Journal - Gazette also report that the Officials at Baer Field reported the plane landed at Erie, Pa., shortly after noon October 2 1954 for refueling. A call from the Erie Dispatch to the Journal-Gazette last night indicated that Judd for a time considered waiting for the low overcast and intermittent mists before he continued the trip, but that he decided about 12:30 pm to complete the last lef of the journey to Geneva.
C. L. McMillen, manager of the Erie Aviation Corp., and a mechanic, Earl Barion, Checked the Plane's propellor governor on Judd's complaint the mechanism had not been operating smoothly, but could find nothing wrong. Mcmillen said he had noted some splashes of oil on the craft's windshield and had wiped them off, but that Judd gave no indication he had been having any trouble with the engine.
CAA officials said the plane, a four-place Stinson Voyager, plunged into a farmer's field about 300 feet from the Pennsylvania Railroad right of way. Eric County Sheriff's deputies said the plane hit the earth with "tremendous impact, scattering wreckage and parts of bodies over a wide area." William A. Monin, 16, an eyewitness, said he saw the plane "come down low out of the fog. It went back up again and must have done a loop. It came back down." A spokesman for the CAA said the poor weather conditions would be a serious obstacle for a plane not equipped with adequate flight instruments. Officials said the ceiling at the Buffalo Airport at the time of the crash was about 600 feed mist, smoke and fog they said, had cut visibility down to about four miles.
Miss Myers, member of the "Twirlers." a baton group at north side high school, was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Hubert E. Myers. Her father is an interviewer in the personnel department at the General Electric Co. Here. She was a member of the Forest Park Methodist Church, Miss Myers body will be brought to the D. O.
