10321. Harry Watt Carpenter Sr.

Descendants provided by Donald W. Blankman on 17 Sep 2013.  dblank@comcast.net

--- 4th Generation ---

8.  Harry Watt4 CARPENTER Sr. (1349).
BIRTH:
Harry Watt Carpenter, Sr. was the son of William Frost Carpenter and Margaret L. Watt. He was born 18 March 1894 in Brooklyn, New York. By 1900, at the age of 6, Harry was living as an inmate, along with his two brothers William R. Carpenter and Clarence E. Carpenter in The Home For Destitute Children at 217 Sterling Place, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
MOTHER: remarriage)
He remained there probably until his mother married Walter S. Hicks about 1903 and removed the boys from the "Home." In the 1910 census Harry was listed at age 16, attending school, and living with the family at 103 Quincy Street, in Brooklyn. The family then consisted of: Walter S. Hicks, age 56, married before, and employed as manager at the gas company; Margaret L. Hicks, age 37, married before; William R. Carpenter, age 20, employed as a stenograph typesetter for a newspaper office. Harry's brother Clarence was not listed. In the 1920 census of Brooklyn, Harry W. Carpenter, age 25 and single, was still living with Walter Hicks, his step-father, who was then 66 years old and still working as manager for the gas company; his mother Margaret Hicks, age 47; and with Walter Hicks, Jr., age 19, (born, therefore, about 1901, so perhaps he was not a half-brother to Harry? Perhaps he had been living with his mother in the 1910 census?) Harry was working as a clerk in a bank in 1920. They were living at 527 Lincoln Place, in Brooklyn. Harry's brother Clarence E. Carpenter was not living with the Hicks family in the 1910 census, ...
DRAFT: WWI
... but as of 5 June 1917 his World War I Draft Registration Card showed him as having been born in Brooklyn, and working as an office manager for the Geneva Gazette, in Geneva, New York. Clarence was married at that time and he was described as being of medium and slender build, with light blue eyes, and light brown hair. The card also stated that he had served as a private in the calvary. Perhaps the presence of Clarence in Geneva influenced Harry to leave Brooklyn for the Geneva area?
MARRIAGE:
On 8 June 1925 Harry Watt Carpenter, Sr. married Laura V. Olschewske, born 27 April 1906 in Seneca, New York. She was the daughter of Wilhelm Olschewske and Paulina Olsowsky. Harry and Laura had a son Harry Watt Carpenter , Jr. born 11 December 1927 in Geneva, New York. In the 1930 census of Geneva City, enumerated on 7 April 1930, Harry, Sr., age 36, his wife Laura, age 24, and their son Harry, Jr., age 2 years, four months were living with Laura's parents at 19 West Street. Harry was working as a printer in a Printing Shop.
SPOUSE:
Laura's parents were from Germany and immigrated in 1888. Harry Sr. and Laura also had a daughter Nancy Carpenter who was born about 1943, and who lives in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Laura died in January of 1978 in Geneva, after ...
DEATH:
... which her husband Harry, Sr. removed to Phoenix to be near his daughter Nancy, where he died in January 1983.
BURIAL:
They are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Waterloo, New York.
He was born on 18 Mar 1894 at New York, USA.  He married Laura V. OLSCHEWSKE (1350), daughter of Wilhelm OLSCHEWSKE (1351) and Paulina OLSOWSKY (1352), on 8 Jun 1925 at Seneca, New York, USA.  He died in Jan 1983 at Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona, USA, at age 88.
