Randall H. Furnivall
Dec. 31, 1951 - May 7, 2009
Randall H. "Munchkin" FURNIVALL, 57, of 1030 Elm St., Rochester, died Thursday at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.
On Dec. 31, 1951, Randall H. Furnivall was born to Donald H. and Naomi Jean (Carpenter) Furnivall. He was married to Kathy Sue Smith on Dec. 22, 1974, in Rochester, and she survives.
Randy's life story begins on a unique note. He was born 3 1/2 months premature, weighing a mere 1 pound 12 ounces. When he was allowed to come home he was brought in a shoe box. He was so tiny that he slept in a dresser drawer.
As a young man, a proud Zebra, graduating from Rochester High School in 1972 - Randy was a record-setting wrestler. Wrestling at 98 pounds, this remarkable young man was MVP and garnered the most points for three consecutive years. It was Randy and teammate Wayne Grube who were the first men of the mats to be inducted into the Letterman's Club.
Randy, known by his best friends as "Munchkin," proved that size doesn't matter. Overcoming many odds he was dealt, Randy answered with a positive attitude, highly motivated to persevere with grace and style. With his hustle, work ethic and common sense and great desire to help others he was an example for all to follow. He accomplished many things in his life of 57 years - and his influence was one of his greatest gifts - leaving a rippling effect to all of the lives he touched.
As a 32-year member of the Fulton County Emergency Management Association, Randy was currently serving as communications chief. He also served the Fulton County CB Club as president for a number of years. Randy was also a member of the Old Cross Roads Baptist Church, Gilead.
A collector of die cast cars of the 1950s to 1970s, Randy also loved the music of Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys. In the early years it was Randy who enjoyed the camaraderie of sharing the daily events at Hardee's over coffee. More recently the coffee guys enjoy talking over the events of the day at Wendy's. Randy was always there in the thick of things.
Following his graduation from RHS he attended the Elkhart Workshop for the Blind. Randy was recognized for his ability to motivate his classmates by common sense. His solid work ethic was also noted - as a hustler and the go to man to get the job done!
Randy was a man of many talents. Early on in his career he worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Cedar Post Restaurant. He was also a dispatcher for the Rochester Police Department. As a bookkeeper he worked for RSVP and the Area V Council on Aging. As a mechanic he helped Jack Utter repairing mopeds and bicycles. Later utilizing his small engine repair skills, he opened a shop in his garage and repaired mowers and other small engines. Randy always kept busy helping others with a variety of odd jobs, as providing for his family was essential.
Randy was a caring and a giving human, willing to share the shirt off his back. He enjoyed organizing and promoting fish fries and chili suppers for charity with the proceeds directed to Fulton County residents for Special Olympics or burn victims. In the evenings he enjoyed watching "COPS" and "America's Most Wanted," and he began six days a week with WROI's "Trading Post."
Of supreme importance to Randy was his family. Together they enjoyed outings to Indiana Beach, Potawatomi Zoo, Science Central and Chuckie Cheese's. These outing and special times shared together always revolved around his children and then later grandchildren. This true gentleman with a heart of gold leaves behind a wonderful legacy. His loyal and devoted wife Kathy; adoring children, Janella Furnivall and John Banter, Logansport, and Jason Furnivall and wife Katheryn, Akron; four loving grandsons, Michael, Tyler, and Kyle Banter, Logansport, and Lerris "Leaf" Furnivall, Akron; and dedicated brothers, Richard Furnivall and wife Kathy, Rochester, and Ronald Furnivall and wife Tina, Rochester, all will remember the many good times their family shared, cherishing their memories. Munchkin will also be missed by his friends at the Old Cross Roads Baptist Church, coffee pals, CB buddies and the Fulton County EMA family. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Randy was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Esther Smith, and his brother-in-law, Karl Smith.
A celebration of the life of Mr. Randall H. "Munchkin" Furnivall will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with Pastor Thad Stewart officiating. Friends may visit with his family from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour prior to his service. Burial will follow in Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may be made to the Fulton County Special Olympics, Omega Church, the Old Cross Roads Baptist Church or the Indiana School for the Blind. Electronic expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at goodfamily@rtcol.com.
