DAVID BURTON CARPENTER
David Burton Carpenter of Missouri City, a chemical engineer and educator who held three patents, died April 5 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was 75.
Carpenter earned both bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees during his five years at Rice University and a master’s of business administration from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.
A native of Shawnee, Okla., Carpenter was his high school salutatorian at John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City and won the Gaylord scholarship in chemistry and math.
Carpenter was awarded three patents while working in research and development for Ashland Oil Co. in Kentucky – two for making naphthalene from diesel fuel, and one for making activated carbon from two refinery waste products.
He later worked as assistant manager for Ashland’s plant in Great Meadows, NJ, and as operations manager for Calgon Corp. in Ashland, Ky.
Wanting to return to Texas, Carpenter accepted a position in commercial development for Merichem Co. in Missouri City. He later started a custom manufacturing pilot plant for the scale-up and commercialization of products and processes. He called it Sheith, a combination of his children’s names. The startup was caught by the oil collapse of the early 1980s, and it shut down in 1985.
Carpenter then was hired as operations manager by South Hampton Refining, where he oversaw several capital expansion projects before going to work for Pennzoil as a research and development engineer. He later worked for Texmark Chemical as plant manager and R&D manager.
After retirement, Carpenter worked as an engineering consultant and taught process engineering as an adjunct professor at Alvin Community College. He tutored students in physical science and mathematics.
He was active in the Episcopal Church, serving on the vestries of three churches, including positions as senior warden and junior warden. He chaired finance committees and served as project manager for building projects at various churches.
Carpenter served as elections clerk and election judge for several local and national elections, and worked for H&R Block, helping citizens file their taxes. He was an avid genealogist.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Howell Carpenter; two children, Sherry Schreck of Missouri City and Keith Carpenter of Milwaukee, Wis.; and three grandchildren, Charlie Schreck of Oklahoma City, Laura Schreck of Houston and Allie Carpenter of Milwaukee, Wis. His sister, Sally Carpenter Hale, lives in Doylestown, Pa.
The family asks that donations be made to the ALS Association or the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany Book of Remembrance.

Born on the 4th of July, 1928, Nancy passed away late in the day on June 17, 2020, just a few weeks shy of her 92nd birthday. Born in Flushing, she moved with her family to Port Washington when she was about twelve years old. At the age of 18 she married a local boy, Charles (a/k/a Chip) Carpenter when the young sailor returned from three theatres in the Mediterranean Sea and Pacific Ocean during WWII. He predeceased her in 2007. She was the last survivor of her nuclear family of five sisters and one brother. Her brother, Carl, predeceased her in November of last year.
Nancy and Chip lived in Port Washington for their entire married life, raising four children. She is survived by those children: Rebecca Byrne (the late Daniel), Nancy Venetos (George), Thomas Carpenter (Barbara) and Amelia Fitzmaurice (Michael); eleven grandchildren: Daniel, Barbara (Mrs. Michael McGovern), Matthew and James Byrne, Jason Carpenter and Ezra Venetos, Nicole (Mrs. James McCain), Timothy Carpenter, and Conor, Neil and Rebecca Fitzmaurice, as well as nine great-grandchildren and a slew of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by grandson, Lorca Venetos.
After her husband's death she moved to East Northport where she resided for ten years, following which she moved to Denver, Colorado to be near her youngest child, Amy, and where she continued to live independently until about a week before her death from pneumonia.
A quiet and shy youngster, Nancy was a pleasantly gregarious personality in her later years, often being scolded for speaking her mind. But those scoldings didn't bother her. She knew that she'd lived a long life and had seen and experienced more than most. She'd lived through the depression of the 1930s, the war years in the 1940s, JFK's assassination, the Feminist and Civil Rights Movements, the Vietnam War, the moon landing, the dawn of a new century, the 911 terrorist attack, Covid-19 and so much more. She'd known American life under fifteen presidents and all that goes along with the changes in party politics. As a result, she was a self-appointed political pundit. She was never without a story about people and places from her experiences. She was an avid reader, well known at the public libraries she visited weekly. She loved music, had an engaging voice, and always had a song in her heart.
To the end she was lucid and talkative. She and her stories will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Interment will be later in the year at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.

Betty Jane Henshon, age 87 a resident of Silverhill, AL passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014. Mrs. Henshon was preceded in death by her parents, John and Beatrice Singleton and her son, John Henshon. She is survived by five sons, James Henshon of Silberhill, AL, Joel Henshon of Brewton, AL, Dennis Henshon of Pittsburgh, PA, Brian Henshon of Mobile, AL and Matthew Henshon of Theodore, AL; three daughters, Betty Jane Reed of New Jersey, Katherine Micale of New York and Marcia Falcone of New Jersey and thirteen grandchildren. The Henshon family would like to express their appreciation to all who sent prayers, flowers and cards and for all their thoughtfulness. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Robertsdale, AL. James Peter Henshon, born on December 13, 1952, the first child born to the late Betty J. Singleton & James P. Henshon. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Minnie L Henshon, three children James W. Henshon (Sarah), Shawna Reynolds (Greg) WA, Nicole Henshon (WA). Five Stepchildren: Barbara Brown (Charles) OH, Angela Thomas (Kenneth) TX, Regina Maye (GA), Theresa Maye (LA), and Shakila Kyles (LA). He also leaves behind six siblings: Betty Reed (Ronnie) NJ, Kathy Micale (Anthony) NC, Joel Henshon (Barbara) AL, Marcia Falcone (Joseph) NJ, Brian Henshon (Michelle) AL, Matthew Henshon (Pam) AL; a special granddaughter, Porscha Maye (AL); seventeen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
