Family on page 255 & 256. His father died when he was six years old, so that
he was thrown upon his own resources and compelled thus early to gain his own
livlihood. He chose a sea-faring life, and from a cabin boy rose to be a
captain, commanding some of the finest vessels in the South American and
European trade. In 1869, having been very successful in his ventures, he
retired from the sea and settled at Monticello, Iowa, where he was a well known
and prominent banker. Mr. Carpenter married three times.
