Philo Post

BIO:
http://www.ohiogenealogyexpress.com/summit/summitco_bios_1881/summitco_bios_1881_p.htm
PHILO POST, farmer; P. O. Twinsburg; was born in June 29, 1817, in Saybrook, Conn., to Joshua and Mollie (Dee) Post. His grandfather's name was also Joshua Post. The father of Mollie Dee was Marcus. To Joshua and Mollie (Dee) Post were born thirteen children, viz., Joshua, Polly, Deborah, Emily, Dianah, Jerusha, Mercy, Belinda, Sallie, Hettie A., Hannah, Juliet and Philo. Philo came to this county with his parents when 4 years of age; the family located in the southern part of the township, near Brandywine, upon land which his father purchased before leaving Connecticut. Joshua died about two years after his arrival. When 14 years of age, Philo moved to Liberty street, this township, with his mother, who purchased 50 acres. With her he lived until his union with Miss Luna Carpenter, which event took place Jan. 1, 1850. She was born Aug. 7, 1828, in Boston Township, and was the daughter of Aaron and Tirzah (Drake) Carpenter, both of whom were natives of Connecticut, and were among the early settlers of Boston Township. To them were born a family of children whose names were Melinda, Luna, Martha, Mary, Cynthia, Maria, Elijah, Cornelius B., George, Comfort, Elijah. Aaron Carpenter was for many years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and a Class-leader of the same. He was a just and upright man, and worthy citizen. The political status of both sides of the families have been Whigs, and more recently Republicans. Since Mr. and Mrs. Post have been married, they have resided on the farm where he first located. He has been an industrious man, and has been successful in accumulating a good share of this world's goods - having 200 acres of land, which is adorned by excellent farm and house buildings. Of six children born him, those living are: Emma V., now the wife of L. Bennett; Stella L., Harry E. and Rosa M. Willie died when 15 months old, and William at 5 years of age. 121. Sarah Carpenter

NOTE: In the 1850 US Census and on the same page with the Ira and Joseph Carpenter families is a Sarah Carpenter Age 15 enumerated with the Walker family higher on the census page. To which family she belongs to is unknown. I assume Ira Carpenter's family because it fits better.
Roaming census pages 1-7 reveals no other Carpenters. Of course, she could be a stray.

Great Grandfather (and Grandmother) (x3)-Lewis Carpenter b. 1805 (or 1808?) in New York(?) and Elizabeth J. Keintch, b. abt. 1813 in Pennsylvania, m. July 22, 1832.  Lewis died Sept. 3, 1861 (according to James Carpenter) in (probably) Pleasant Township, Ohio and is (possibly) buried in Augenstein Cemetery, Pleasant Township, Marion County, Ohio.  However, Lewis shows up on an 1870 Census so birth date of 1861 is probably for another Lewis (in Michigan?).
Lewis' 1st wife, Elizabeth Keintch, died in 1849.  He then married Elizabeth Johnson, b. 1823 in Ireland, on Jan. 11, 1850.  She is the "Elizabeth J." who appears on the 1860 Census in Marion County.  After Lewis' death, she married Isaiah Jones on Dec. 10, 1874.  He died 4 years later and Elizabeth temporarily moved in with Morgan and she appears on the 1880 US Census in Marion County, Ohio as "Elizabeth Jones, 58, SMother".  She was married yet again on Nov. 6, 1881 to David Mouser.
After David Mouser's death in 1896, Elizabeth's behavior becomes increasingly odd with outbursts.  Elizabeth's stepdaughters sue to sell portions of the Mouser property which she has use of until her death. Once the property is sold, she makes her home with her step grandson Perry Mouser and his family in Marion.
Unable to care for Elizabeth in part because of her increasing insanity, Elizabeth is committed in 1900 to the Ohio Insane Asylum in Columbus, where she dies in 1902 following an accident in which she fell backwards down a flight of stairs while trying to escape from the nursing staff.  At first the doctors think it is only a broken ankle, however she dies from internal injuries.  Her body is returned to Marion and she is buried with Mouser and his other wives.

DEATH:  Death and Burial information from James Carpenter of FL. - Information has not been confirmed.
NOTE:  A Lewis Carpenter shows up on an 1870 Census so death date of 1861 is probably for another Lewis (in Michigan?) Carpenter.  Some confusion here!

1830:  There is a single Lewis Carpenter, age between 20-30, listed in the census for Geauga County, Township of Mentor.  There is not a Lewis listed anywhere else in the 1830 census for Ohio, particularly not with Aaron, Aaron, Jr. and Philander in Portage County.

This Lewis Carpenter is buried in Mentor Municipal Cemetery, Mentor Township, Lake (formerly Geauga) County, Ohio and is probably the 1830 Census Lewis above.  He is also in the 1840 Census in Mentor while Lewis is listed in Marion County.

12/26/1834 - Alonzo Carpenter of Mt. Gilead(?) sold Lewis Carpenter
Section 25 Township 6 (Pleasant) Range 15 for $30.00; Book 9 pg 75
**NOTE**  Could this Alonzo be a brother who later moves to Miami County, Kansas and is the reason the younger Alonzo moves there (possibly) as well, leading to the confusion about the 2 PofA letters only 7 weeks apart but from Kansas and Iowa and the fact that one is listed as "Alonzo A. Carpenter" and not just "Alonzo" (see Notes on respective Alonzos).
At the time, Mt. Gilead was a part of Marion County.  In 1848 it was incorporated into the new, Morrow County.

1835: Deeds - Marion, OH
1/20/1835 - James Jones of Marion and Abigail his wife sold Lewis
Carpenter Section 25 Township 6 (Pleasant) Range 15 E 1/2, NW 1/4 for
$30.00; Book 9 pg 74 (this is probably the same James Jones and Abigail Carpenter who got married in 1831 (see below) and who Stuart Koblentz claims might be Lewis' sister)

2/17/1835 - George Carpenter of Delaware County sold Lewis Carpenter
Section 25 Township 6 (Pleasant) Range 15 for $35.00; Book 9 pg 76
NOTE:  There is a George Carpenter, born around 1809 in Pennsylvania, listed in various censes in Berkshire Township, Delaware, Ohio and who is found in the 1870 census living one house away from Newell Carpenter (poss. Alonzo's son with first wife) in Sunbury.

1836: Deeds - Marion, OH
Morgan Carpenter from Franklin County, OH sold Lewis Carpenter Section
25 Township 6 (Pleasant) Range 15 for $30.00; Book 9 pg 76
(is this Morgan a possible son of John Carpenter, son of Nathan, and the source of confusion for Mary Carr (grandpa's genealogist)?  He is not seen on the Ohio census of 1860-possibly dead before then?)

1834-1836--There are at least 5 Carpenters owning land in Section 25, Township 6 (Pleasant), Range 15 who practically give (he paid a total of $125.00) some to Lewis;  Alonzo, Abigail, Benjamin, George and Morgan.  A Rebecca Jane Carpenter sells him more in the same location in 1842 for $43.00 (I suspect that she is a wife/widow of one of the aforementioned male Carpenters, either George or Morgan but not Benjamin since he is recorded as buying land later that year and Alonzo appears later in other records).

On point ONE.  One of my Jones cousins here in Columbus has a letter dated sometime in late 1850's in which Sarah Jones Dildine (the youngest of the three children of James and Abigail Jones) refers to "Uncle Lewis" being down with "gripe" (sic).  Also, there are a number of legal issues in which Isaiah Jones (my great great grandfather, son of Abigail and James) is involved with Lewis and and his family members before Lewis' death and Elizabeth's marriage to his Uncle Isaiah.

One other point to to define I did go back through the Marion, Delaware and Morrow County Court records where I could and I did not find any marriage certificates where women with names Harriett or Abigail married men named Carpenter.  I also went through the wills in those three counties to see if any man named Carpenter died leaving a portion of his estate to a daughter named Harriett or Abigail.  I did find a Harriett listing in a Benjamin Carpenter's will, but dates were off (ie, she would have been widowed from Barks and since this was a transcription of the document and court proceedings the married name would have had to have been used).

--History of Marion County, 1883
_________________________________________________________________

Hi Rob-

Spent the day at the Marion County recorders office going through deed books 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 covering the transition deeds (when Marion County split from Delaware) and years 1824-1837, and I found very, very little.

The John and Mary that you mention are from the wrong end of the county, I mean way off.  The Carpenters we're looking at are nested in Pleasant Township - John and Mary were way up in what is now Wyandot County by Marseilles. (Mar-sails)

There were two transactions, though, that I thought you would find interesting - and keep in mind that sections of land up here are 640 acres (two miles by two miles square) to a section in the Congress Lands, which most of Marion is in.

The first involves James and Abigail selling a tract of land to Lewis for a very small sum of money for the number of acres involved and that would have been in 1834 (about 80 acres in the NE of the section).  Immediately thereafter (a day or so), Alonzo Carpenter quit claimed over a complimenting piece of property (NW, same section, abutting) to give Lewis an uninterupted 160 acres, or a quarter section.

Now in Ohio at that time, a land sale took two-three days to complete.  Once the deed was entered into the recorders office (day one) and the selling party, if married, had to bring the wife to the courthouse (she entered alone) so she could swear under oath that she released her dower interest in the land effected by the sale and did so unmolested and without physical threat by her husband (what we now would think of as coercion).

Now here's what the deeds fail to answer - why would James and Abigail sell this land to Lewis significantly below market, and then why would Alonzo turn around and quit claim (no money changes hands) an equal amount of land to arrive at the quarter section within a couple days at a time?

All the deeds were transcribed into ledgers, and the handwriting is very difficult to read.

Now one of the MAGS women did raise this point - since the number of land sales involving Carpenters is slim at best, could they be raised in a step family that moved to the area, or did they come with Aunts and Uncles.

So instead of answers, just more questions....

Elizabeth J. Keintch

Since a xeroxed copy of the marriage record for Lewis and Elizabeth is all I have providing Elizabeth's maiden name, I am inclined to believe that it was either "Kintch" or J.P. Boyd's spelling of "Kinch", but not "Keintch".  I can find no record of a surname Keintch.  The first instance of the spelling of her last name in the marriage record is somewhat hard to read, but it appears that there are only 6 letters with the Capital 'K', a dotted 'i' and the last two letters, a 'c' and an 'h' very distinct and what appears to be an uncrossed 't' and one letter between the 'i' and the 't' that could (or could not) be an 'n'.  The second instance of the name is very legible, with a distinct capital 'K' and the letters 'i', 'n', 't', 'c', and 'h'.  The problem rests with a small loop before the 'i' which might be an 'e' but which might also be only a stylistic loop preceding the cursive 'i'.
_____________________________________________________________________

Marion Co. census of 1860 has her as "37 years old" but this must be incorrect, since there is a marriage record dated July 22, 1832 and she would have been only 9 at that time.  UPDATE:  Lewis married a second Elizabeth after the first's death in 1849

______________________________________________________________________

Marriage License was issued to Lewis Carpenter and Elizabeth Keintch (possibly Kintch-hard to read) July 24th 1832.
I do heeby certify that on the twenty second day of July 1832   By virtue of a License from the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Marion CountyLewis Carpenter and Elizabeth K(e)intch were joined in marriage by me a Justice of the Peace in and for said County
Given under my hand this 24 day of July 1832

Elizabeth Johnson
