Hi-

Thanks for clarifying that.  One more question - so your line doesn't involve Levi Jones, is that correct?

As for Lewis, nothing new there.  Saw Mary Carr and she is as puzzled as I am.  I did come across a notice of Partition regarding the farm land though.  Morgan Carpenter and Sarah Jane Hull filed it.  Under Ohio law now, once a partition is filed, the land is sold on the courthouse steps at auction, then the sale amount is divided equally amongst the owners prior to sale, less the legal costs, which are significant - the counties don't want partitions and its a messy action.

In the Ottawa County 1880 Census he lists both of his parents' birthplaces as New York which would be inconsistent with Nathaniel (VA) and Nancy (OH)
David D. Hull, 70, "father in law", living with Nellie and Oliver in 1910 Census, where he lists parents as having been born in Virginia and Ohio, so 1880 census birthplaces are an anomaly.

I went back and looked at the census data and it supports the lineage he shows.  The Moyan (instead of Morgan) thing is an Ancestry.com indexer error -- the census clearly shows the name is Morgan.   The indexers had trouble with the name more than once -- in 1870 they indexed him as Virginia L.  However, I don't have documentary evidence that proves the Morgan in Lewis' household in 1850 and 1860 is the same one on his own in 1870 and 1880.  Deeds or some other record could prove or disprove a relationship, but I'd give it a 99% probability as it stands. 12/27/1882 - George O. Carpenter and Harriet (incomplete info) having to
do with Section 25 Township 6 Range 15 17 1/2 and a power of attorney
NOTE: The Township Map of 1878 lists Elizabeth as the owner of 17 acres across the street from Morgan

NOTE:
Elizabeth (Lewis' 2nd wife) remarried in 1874 after Lewis death (in 1872) to Isaiah Jones.  He died in 1878 and it appears that Elizabeth moved in with Morgan until she married yet again in 1881 to David Mouser.  In 1882, there is a record of some civil action involving property in "Pleasant Township, Section 6, Range 25" listing "Isaiah Jones, plaintiff" and "George O. Carpenter, et.al. defendants".  This Isaiah Jones could not have been her deceased husband, so it might have been his son, Isaiah, Jr..  Lewis had a son, George O. Carpenter who may be the defendant listed.  Alvey may have had a son named George as well.  Morgan has power of attorney in this case for everyone but an "Alonzo A."(not his brother), who grants power of attorney to Isaiah Jones.    Was there a dispute over some land that the Carpenter boys claimed was their's from their father, but which had been willed by him to Elizabeth and now was being claimed by Isaiah's son after his father's death?

11/22/1886 - A. B. Carpenter sold land Section 25 Township 6 Range 15 to

NOTE:
Death Certificate source was not a family member, E.B. Gast.
When looking at the 1840, 1850 and 1860 US Census in and around Marion County, Ohio - I find no Samuel Carpenter with spouse Mary.  Nor do I find a marriage record for a Samuel Carpenter and Mary WIlliams close enough in time/place to match up.
The closest Samuel I found was in Delaware County, adjacent to Marion County, at age 65 who in 1850 was married to a "Pheebie" age 61. There is no Morgan in that family. And both of them were born in Pennsylvania, USA.
Farther away, in Monroe County, Ohio is a Samuel Carpenter (age 29 OH in 1850) who was married to a Mary (26 OH) with three children. Elijah 7, Sarah 4 and Henry D. 2. Still no Morgan. They are there  in 1870 and 1880 also with more children but still no Morgan.
CONCLUSION: Parents given in the above death record are inconsistent with known data of parents.

Subject: RE: Rob McNeal #20419 Lineage Question

Thanks, John! I was just looking for a knowledgeable (more than my own) opinion since this item (SEE : DEATH: above) kinda’ threw me for a loop.

I know that it’s hard to find a Samuel Carpenter in Central Ohio because I have been looking for one for other reasons. Remember that I mentioned that about 5 Carpenters sold land in Marion County to Lewis (and very cheaply, I might add-almost giving it away)? Well, in 1842 Rebecca Jane Carpenter sold him a parcel adjoining the land already owned by Lewis;

5/30/1842: Rebecca Jane Carpenter of Delaware County sold Lewis Carpenter Section 25 Township 6 (Pleasant) Range 15 for $43.00; Marion County Ohio Deed Book 16 pg 98

This Rebecca Jane Carpenter was born in 1820 and was the daughter of Sarah Carpenter Gaylord (she married Eleazer Gaylord in 1823) and Samuel Carpenter,  acc. to her Kosciusko County, Indiana Death Certificate. She is buried alongside her mother in Wooden Cemetery, Etna Green, Kosciusko, Indiana. Sarah Gaylord (misspelled as ‘Gayler’) was enumerated in the 1860 census for Pleasant Twp., Marion County, Ohio living next to Lewis and family with Cyrus and Dorcas Brown. I have never been able to pin down this Samuel (probably born in NY sometime around 1780-there are a few candidates), husband of Sarah and father to Rebecca Jane, even though I have more than a few pieces of evidence that he existed. Adding to the confusion, Rebecca Jane married Wesley Carpenter, son of Samuel Carpenter of Alexandria, Licking County, Ohio, but that Samuel is well documented.

Anyway, I am still plugging away and I will update you if I ever have a breakthrough. Otherwise, my working hypothesis remains that Morgan is the son of Lewis and Elizabeth but I have no idea who his grandparents were.

of Ottawa County, Ohio

The Ottawa County [Ohio] Genealogical Society established a project to document the service records of veterans who were born, resided, died, or buried in Ottawa County, Ohio.  Titled “Veterans of Ottawa County Prior to 1900,” the project’s goal  was to identify veterans who served in American wars from the time of Revolutionary War through the Spanish American War.  In an attempt to identify veterans who met the criteria, document their military service, and provide documentation for that service, the committee created a detailed questionnaire. Family data - including the names; ages; birth and death dates; birth and death places; and residences of spouses and children - were also part of the questionnaire.

Terre Haute, Ind., Jan. 26 - That a meteor set off the car of powd

that on the night of the disaster and at the time of the explosion a large
meteor passed over his place. It appeared like a great ball of fire, he
said, and made a noise like a strong wind. The meteor, said Mr. Brown, was
moving in the direction of Sandford and left a trail of sparks. Almost
immediately after its appearance, he said, the explosion of the car of

In the 1900 census for District 75, Stratton Township, Edgar Co., IL, there is a "Benj. F." Carpenter, born in Ohio (parents in NY and Penn.) in Feb. 1834, a widower and a gunsmith, living with son, Lewis O., 27, born in April, 1873 in Ohio, single and a grocer and daughter Cora, 22, born Aug. 1877 in Illinois and single.  This is, of course, Alva but no explanation for the name change is apparent.  Could his middle initial have stood for 'Benjamin'?  Lewis had an early land transaction with a Benjamin Carpenter in Marion County.

Christena Wolford

Mary Carr has that her name is spelled "Christena" and that her parents were of foreign birth (1880 census for Douglas, Clark County, IL says both b. Germany)

Marriage Notes for Alva B. Carpenter and Christena Wolford

This George is buried in Augenmstein Cemetery in Waldo, Ohio but it is far from certain what his relationship is to Alva or any of the Carpenters listed as descendants of Lewis.

346. George Carpenter

This could be the George L. Carpenter who's monument is in Augenstein Cemetery since birthdates are in 1861, although that one lists birthplace as "Allen Co., OH".  Of course, Alonzo Carpenter (not Alva's brother) is in Lima, Allen County, Ohio at that time, so there might be a connection.

In the census of 1880, Douglas Township District 36, Clark County, Illinois, George, age 19, is enumerated as living with Alva and Christenia, so he probably did not marry Olive Rush and probably is not the George L. Carpenter buried in Augenstein Cemetery
