183. Jacob Carpenter

Number 47 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H.
Carpenter, 1901.

WILL: Will dated 2 May 1781 was witnessed by Daniel Kirby, Hannah Kirby and
Lindy Frost.
He was a currier and cordwainer, A Friend, and was a Loyalist during the
American Revolution.   He owned Lot No. 4 at Red Springs.
During the American Revolution Jacob's house was robbed by a party of
"Whigs" from Westchester, led by one Carhart.  They had been hospitably

On 31 May 1781, Jacob sends to the Westbury Meeting "a condemnation" of
himself for "marrying out of the society," "for hiring men to go to the
war," "for keeping slaves," and says he was a birth-right "Friend," regrets
his misbehavior towards the meeting, and hopes for forgiveness, et cetera.
(Book A, p. 370).

NOTE:
The following, similar to above, but with addtional info was supplied by: Donald W. Blankman on 17 Sep 2013.  dblank@comcast.net
512.  Jacob10 CARPENTER (1632).  Jacob Carpenter, son of John, was born at Musketa Cove about 1716. His wife was Hannah Perce (or Peirce). He was a "currier and cordwainer" by trade, but his principal occupation was that of a farmer. He had for his homestead that part of original lot No. 4 (at Red Springs) which was set off to his father and his uncle Benjamin on 6 January 1713. On this farm he lived until his death in 1781. He was a man much respected and trusted as may be seen by the mentions of him as executor, etc. His will dated 2d. 5mo. 1781, and shows wife Hannah, daughters Mary Wood, Elizabeth Bowne, and Fanny, son James, and son-in-law Jonas Wood. Daniel Kirby, Hannah Kirby, Lindy Frost were the witnesses. During the Revolutionary War the house of Jacob Carpenter was robbed by a party of "Whigs" from Westchester, led by one Carhart. They had been hospitably entertained by Carpenter, they representing themselves as "loyalists." (See Rivington's Gazette, and Onderdonk" Incidents.) Later the same month as Jacob signed his will, specifically 31 May 1781, he sent to the Westbury Meeting "a condemnation " of himself "for marrying out of the society (of Friends), for hiring men to go to war," "for keeping slaves," and says he was a birth-right "Friend," regrets his misbehavior towards the meeting, and hopes for forgiveness, etc. (Book A. p. 370.) In February of 1882 the genealogist Daniel Hoogland Carpenter visited Mrs. Ann Augusta Carpenter, the widow of William C. Carpenter, who inherited the property of his great grandfather (the above Jacob) at Red Springs. Mrs. Carpenter showed him the original will of Jacob, and also the record of births, etc., of both Jacob and his son James's family. She also furnished him with valuable information regarding the family, their property, etc. In 1760 Jacob was the surviving executor of Noah Townsend's estate. (See original papers of Daniel Carpenter.).  He married Hannah PERCE (1633) circa 1644 at Red Springs, Musketa Cove, Nassau, New York, USA.  He was born circa 1716 at Musketa Cove, Nassau, New York, USA.  He was Currier and cordwainner circa 1750.  He died in 1781 at Musketa Cove, Nassau, New York, USA.

Her will was dated 20 April 1742 and proven 8 june 1742.  She died 22 April
1742.  See page 76 of the Carpenter Memorial for details of will.
Her brother was Edward Arnold.

Abiah Carpenter

Number 206 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 75.
Family on page 131 (#102).  Abiah was not of age (21) in 1727 when his father
died.  Possible twin to Hannah.  Number 719 on page 132 is incorrect.
Currently no factual evidence supports his being a twin.

Abiah was a Captain of a sloop (a type of sailing ship) when he wrote his will
on 7 Sept 1729 on the island of St. Christophers.  He died there on 17 Sept
1729.  He probably died of illness.  See details of his will and witnesses on
page 75 and 76.   AF has death date as 13 Sept. 1729.

He was co-owner of a sailing sloop in the Caribbean trade.

Subject: Re: SC Archives for Carpenters

SC (South Carolina) was involved in trade with New England and several New England Carpenters established merchant or mariner outposts in the southern port cities.
The Oliver mentioned in the SC archives was a mariner, possibly ABC #208.
The Richard was a merchant from Rhode Island who traveled throughout the southeast -- you can read more about him in my article "Richard Carpenter, Pioneer Merchant of British West Florida and the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida," in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 72, No. 1 (March 1984), pp. 51-62.  He is ABC #621.
The Dan Carpenter in Camden SC is ABC #1525, pp. 216, 370.  (His brother Timothy #1527 was an itinerant Methodist preacher who settled in Tennessee.)
Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter, widow of Phanuel Carpenter ABC #2028, also lived in Camden SC.
**** The Abiah Carpenter may be ABC #719, who is unaccounted for in ABC.  Margaret and husband George Carpenter lived near Abiah and were probably related, but again, not enough evidence to prove anything.  ****
The later Carpenters in the piedmont counties were from PA, VA, and NC lines.  Lots of interesting possibilities in the South!

Terry
