I may well be force-fitting the wrong Coles here and, perhaps, the son was actually the Coles you seek. It seems clear that there were two, contemporary Coles, apparently cousins. David S. Carpenter, however, by location, name and timing seems most likely the son of: “COLES CARPENTER b. ca. 1802-5, m. SARAH MAGDALA SYPHERS (baptized Grand Lake, Queens Co., NB 10MAR1811), daughter of David and Mary (Earle) Cyphers.” ‘Burdsill’ (58) and ‘Ellinor’ (58) Carpenter were on page 16 of the 1861 census of Richmond Parish. Coles Carpenter (57) was on page 58. David (30) and ‘Emly’ (26) Carpenter were on page 55. Again this suggests that David was Coles’ son. Perhaps probate records of Carleton Co. might resolve the matter. Thomas.
