Subject: Silas, son of William of Proividence, His connection with the Friends (Quakers)
Here's another tidbit I dug up while looking for info on Thomas Carpenter. We have seen the record of when this Silas Carpenter requested permission of his RI Friends about 1745 to go to North Carolina. I had wondered if he ever returned, and this answers that question:
Silas Carpenter (son of Silas, son of William of Providence), grandfather of Thomas:
Extracted from minute book, Core Sound MM, Hege Library, Guilford College, Greensboro NC July 14, 2005. 1750, 1st mo 6th Monthly meeting met before which Benjamin Small and Meriam Albertson, Henry Stanton, Junior, and Hope Borden laid their intentions of taking each other in marriage. Also a certificate from Cape Fear was read which manifested Friends unity and satisfaction with the visit of our esteemed Friend Silas Carpenter. He also requests one from us in order to remove to New England in order to a regular preceedings. the meeting appoints Nicholas Bryand and wife, William Hill and his wife to inquire into the conversations and clearness of all other incumberances of marriage of the two couples above named and also into the conversation of our Friend Carpinter and clearness in respect of marriage. No further business the meeting adjourns to meet in course.
On the same date, Silas Carpenter: Witness to marriage of Benjamin Small and Miriam Alberton

The following had already been entered into Donald Kozlowski's Carpenter Family Tree RootsWeb/WorldConnect database:
9/18/1745 Silas present before the Council (Providence) and resign as guardian of nephew, William, son of William, deceased, as he is about to leave the country. (He deeds again in 1747). Greene's History of E. Greenwich, R.I. states that among the able ministers of the Friends Society was Silas Carpenter. They occasionally traveled to other parts of the county to preach. When Silas Carpenter was about to move to North Carolina in 1745, the Meeting appointed two Friends to inquire into his circumstances and conversation and how he had left provision for his ancient mother. After three months the report was favorable. He was "clear from any entanglement in marriage." 5/5/1745 Silas of Providence, yeoman, dedds to John DDexter 232 Acres north side of Pawtuxet River.

NOTE:
Daniel Hoogland Carpenter's Carpenter Family in America (pp. 323/324 inaccurately assigned Christiana Low to Silas the 2nd (b. 1681 and d. 1751) as his wife. She was actually the wife of his son Silas (b. 1709 and d. 1801). Of course, Thomas was their son. Also, cousin Daniel assigned Anthony Low Carpenter to Silas the 2nd but he was the son of Silas the 3rd and Christiana. Many of the online genealogies have copied this error. Babrara C. Martin

Notes for Silas Carpenter
Note: Daniel Hoogland Carpenter’s  history of the Carpenter Family was in error in stating that Silas (1681-1751), father of this Silas (1709-1801), had as a wife Christina Low. Rather, it was this Silas, his oldest son, who married Christina.  Also, he assigned Anthony Low Carpenter to the older Silas as his son, but Anthony was the son of Silas and Christina.  Source of the error: History and Genealogy of the Carpenter Family in America: From the Settlement at Providence, R.I., 1637-1901 by Daniel Hoogland Carpenter, Marion Press, 1901, pp. 323-324

It is now listed as “lost”.

However, the following location has also been reported, but might be in error. (Note it was just from a memory of a Mr. Pepino.)  U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600so-Current give his birth as 1707 and death as 3 May 1801, with death at East Providence, Providence Co., RI and burial at Silas Carpenter Lot,  East Providence, Providence RI.  Note concerning this East Providence cemetery: “Silas Carpenter stone, now missing, recalled from memory by Carl Pepino 11/8/78. This cemetery has not been recorded. This cemetery is not registered and has not been located.”  http://ricemeteries.tripod.com/ep_ceme.HTM#EP501  Note: Barrington is just due south of East Providence. My guess is that they are speaking of the same burial spot, but with different names.
My guess is that they are the same burial.
