Carl, my grandfather, Alva Francis Carpenter, was born
in Genoa, Vernon county WI in 1863. He had two
younger brothers, Robert and John, and three younger
sisters, Louisa (married Van Vleet and stayed in WI),
Mary Roxanna (married Lorenzo Dow Fox and went to MS),
and Agnes (married J. O. Ferguson).
My greatgrandparents came directly from Harmony,
Chatauqua county, NY. John was born at Cameron,
Steuben county NY in 1834.
Don't know if this is a help or not, but I believe
that some of John's siblings and first cousins also
went to WI about the time he did (1861)

Thanks, John, I'm descended from this Timothy's son John, thru his son Alva
Francis, then Alva, then my brother Alva Francis and me. Timothy's son
Alvah was another Alva Francis whose wife was named Roxana. According to
family tradition AF was a physician in NYC. My grandfather, Alva Francis,
had a sister named Roxana, and also named his older daughter Roxana. That
was my aunt Sana, whose only granddaughter is Roxanne. You never know how
much tradition to trust. There's nearly always some truth in it so you
can't disregard it, but it changes drastically thru the years. If you would
fax Charles addenda to me at 915-336-3928, I'll copy it and add it to the
copies I had made. Chad was very nice and gave me permission to distribute
it as long as I don't make money on it. Seems to be very interested in
continuing his grandfather's work.
Another family tradition is that our grandfather went to Mexico with his
daughter Sana in about 1909 to look for an uncle of his who was a merchant
on the Santa Fe/Chihuahua trail and was last heard from in a small town
north of ciudad Chihuahua....no tradition as to first name, but there are a
lot of Carpinteros and Carpinteiros in northern Chihuahua from ciudad
Chihuahua to Juarez. They lived in Mobile AL at the time and took the train
to CA and back spending time in NM and Chihuahua and he bought a ranch in NM
and moved his family there the following year.

William Brayton Carpenter Sr. was a veteran of the Civil War. He served in the Civil War with
Company H of the 78th NY Infantry Volunteers. He was a POW in Virginia during the war. After release, he returned to his regiment, which eventually was absorbed into the 102nd NY infantry and served for the duration of the war. He eventually moved from NY to Pierce County, Wisconsin and lived with wife, Minerva Baker Carpenter until his death in 1928.

Minerva Leona Baker Carpenter was the daughter of Brayton Baker and Betsey Phillips Baker. Her Paternal grandparents were Stephen Baker III, and Susanna H Mathewson Baker, so her roots can be traced back to the American Revolution. She married William Brayton Carpenter Sr. in the Chautauqua, NY area in 1865 after the Civil War. The Carpenters moved west and settled in Pierce County, Wisconsin near Beldenville, where Minerva died in 1929.

Jonathan moved to Washington state in 1910. He and Alice had no children to
each other. She was the daughter of Robert and Anne (Hale) Lopus and was an
aunt to Jonathan by her previous marriage to Isaac. She ultimately left
Jonathan, but he reportedly took care of her in her latter days. Alice's first
husband, Isaac, was the son of Silas (152) and Lydia (Hoag) Carpenter.

Isaac C. Carpenter

Isaac was a Civil War veteran. His daughter Anne gave the following account:
His parents died of malaria when he was about age 6. Various relatives took
the children and raised them. Isaac's uncle, William PIER, came from the east
and took Isaac to raise. He lived with his uncle till age 16 when he ran away
from home, joined the Union Army and was attached to Co. "H", 78th N.Y. Vol.
Inf., 3rd Brigade, 2nd Div., 12th Army Corps, which was later consolated into
the 20th Army Corps..
He fought in the second battle of Bull Run and at Chancellorsville, where he
was captured and held in Libby Prison two weeks. He either escaped or was
exchanged and subsequently fought in the battles of Lookout Mountain,
Missionary Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain, and Peach Tree Creek. At the latter, he
was wounded and hospitalized three months. He rejoined his outfit in October
1864, just before the "March to the Sea." At Savannah, GA, he received
seven (7) wounds and lost his right leg. He spent about a year in Central Park
Hospital, NY City, and was discharged from Co. "H", 102nd N.Y.
Volunteers, March 5, 1865.
Isaac is mentioned in the 1875 census of Harmony Twp. His daughter gave his
death date as 1912. The gravestone inscription reads: (1844-1914).
Alice was a daughter of Robert and Ann (Hale) Lopus.
