7790. William Frost Carpenter

Descendants provided by Donald W. Blankman on 17 Sep 2013.  dblank@comcast.net

--- 5th Generation ---
16.  William Frost5 CARPENTER-45271 (1615).
BIRTH:
We first encounter William Frost Carpenter in the 1870 census (taken 1 June 1870) living in Oyster Bay, Queens County, New York with his parents William T. Carpenter and Sarah C. Frost. He was then listed aged 4/12ths, which would put his birth some time in February 1870. However, column 13 of the census provides that if the child was born within the year (1 June 1869 - 1 June 1870) the month was to be shown. For William, October is listed, so he was perhaps born in October 1869, but this information is in conflict with the 4 months old claim. a rost Genealogy say he was born 9 January 1870, which is probably more reliable than the census record. We next find William at age 10 and attending school in Oyster Bay in the 1880 census.
MARRIAGE:
The New York State Census for Brooklyn, Kings County, New York for 1892 shows our William F. Carpenter at age 22, employed as an electrician, living with his wife Margaret L. (Watt) Carpenter, age 21, and their two sons William R. Carpenter, age 3, and Clarence E. Carpenter, age 1. So, William and Margaret were married 29 June 1888, in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. On 18 March 1894 Margaret gave birth to Harry Watt Carpenter, but again, the specific birth record has not been located.
MARRIAGE: Breakup
Between 1894 and 1900 the family broke up for some unknown reason. Perhaps domestic, health, financial or legal problems forced the family apart, and we find in the 1900 U.S. Census for Brooklyn, that the three boys were listed as inmates of the Home for Destitute Children, at 217 Sterling Place, in Brooklyn. The boys were listed as follows: Carpenter, William, born May 6, 1889, age 11; Carpenter, Clarence E., born October 28, 1891, age 8; and Carpenter, Harry W., born March 18, 1894, age 6. Note that William F. Carpenter named his sons after himself and his two younger brothers Harry and Clarence. The boys were not shown to have been brothers in the census, but numerous other records lead to that conclusion. The Brooklyn Industrial School Association and Home For Destitute Children at 215-225 Sterling Place in Brooklyn was established in 1854. One can see a photo of how it looked and a comprehensive story of its existence if one "Googles" The Home for Destitute Children, and reads the Wikipedia entry for the institution. One thing to note is that actual orphans were sent to an orphanage and not the "Home," which was reserved for children whose parents were unable to provide for them. The parent placing the children had to make application for the admission of the children, so if those records still exist, the "why" in the application could be ascertained.
SPOUSE:
Margaret L. Carpenter was listed in the 1900 Census living at 633 President Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, age 28, born in May 1872 in New York, working as a stenographer, married, and had been for 11 years. The census also showed that Margaret had 4 children, three of whom were still living. She was living with her mother, Millicent Watt, age 68, a widow, born May 1832 in Ireland, the mother of 9 children, 7 of whom were still living. Also living with Margaret and her mother Millicent were: Isabella E. Watt, age 38, born December 1861 in Ireland, single; Lucy J. Watt, age 37, born August 1862 in Ireland, single; and James R. Watt, age 30, born January 1870 in New York, single. Isabella and Lucy were also employed as stenographers, and James as an electrician. Therefore, divorce was apparently not the proximate cause of the boys being placed in the "Home."  ...
SPOUSE: re-marriage
The fact remains that by 1903 Margaret got her act together and married Walter Hicks and got her boys back from the" Home." In the 1910 census of Brooklyn, New York we find living in a multi-family home at 103 Quincy Street as enumeration family No. 386, Walter S. Hicks, age 56, manager at the gas company; Margaret L. Hicks, age 37, Walter's wife of 7 years; William R. Carpenter, step-son, age 20, and Harry W. Carpenter, step-son, age 16. Margaret lived on until 1932, ...
DEATH:
... but the fate of William F. Carpenter has yet to be discovered.  He was born on 9 Jan 1870 at Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, USA.  He married Margaret (Maggie) L. WATT (1616), daughter of James R. WATT (1813) and Millicent KINKAID (1814), on 29 Jun 1888 at Certif#3200, Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA.
An unsubstantiated record indicates that William F. Carpenter died in 1910.

Subject: New Carpenter Line tied to 2/2A. Providence Group
Dear John R. Carpenter,
...
I have provided my twin great-grandnephews with a rather comprehensive genealogy of their ancestry. By the time they are adults and able to appreciate the effort I expended on their behalf, I will have long since finished my annual trips around the sun, but they will have my product by which they can remember that I once existed.
...
For whatever it may be worth, I produced from my database an Ahnentafel between the William Carpenter, who was the progenitor of the Providence Carpenters and my great-grandnephew River Holden Carpenter, born 17 March 2008 in California, and I attach it hereto for your information. If it will aid in the application for the free tests, that's great. If not, then perhaps it may be of interest to others trying to complete their lines in this branch.
Naturally, I am available to answer any questions anyone may have about the information I have submitted.
Sincerely,
Donald W. Blankman
Genealogist
