A Strange Tragedy In Michigan
Local Woman Nearly Lost Her Life While on a Visit to Relatives
Mrs. Anna (Decker) Courtox of Warsaw, NY, had a very narrow escape from death, recently, when she was in Belding, Michigan visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mr. Lester Carpenter. Gas fumes, blown back through the chimney into the house by a high wind, caused the death of Mr. Carpenter and the serious illness of herself, two cousins, and a neighbor who came to the house to help after the others were taken ill. The doctor also collapsed at the hospital after he had taken them there for treatment.
Mr. Carpenter, 73, manager of the Belding Co-op, and a former resident of Wyoming County, (NY), became ill at about ten o'clock and died an hour later at his home, as the doctor was attempting to revive him. Shortly after, Mrs. Emmons, his daughter, and Mrs. Courtox fell unconscious and they were removed to the hospital in Ionia in an ambulance where they were kept for two and half days. The grandson 14, who arrived home later in the evening was also taken ill.
Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter and the other two women had been playing games during the evening and Mrs. Carpenter, growing tired went on to bed at nine o'clock. As she closed her bed room door and opened her window she escaped the fumes. The others who remained downstairs were not aware of the fumes as they noticed no odor. However, the hospital attendants who worked over them later on, said their clothing had a sweetish smell.
The cause of the tragedy was a mystery to the authorities for some time, as it was definitely ascertained that food they had eaten was not impure. Finally, it was discovered that when the coal furnace in the house was reconverted for gas, a workman had failed to close the chimney clean-out opening at the ground level, and a strong wind blowing in at this point had forced the poisonous fumes back into the house.

Mrs. Carpenter, nee Myrtle Richards, was born at Clyde, Ohio, and whenquite young moved with her parents to Bloomville, Ohio.  Here she wasmarried August 20, 1883 to J.W. Carpenter.  Mr. and Mrs. moved toDecatur, Indiana, and came to Kalamazoo 11 years ago.
She is a member of the local Daughters of Hur and of the Women'sRelief corps. She leaves a host friends in the city to mourn heruntimely death.
The deceased is survived by a husband, one daughter Mrs. Frank Ehrmanof this city and two sons, Maurice of Detroit, and Ernest of Mendon.
