Betsey Dexter Hi Jan, Do you have specific dates for them? I have seen conflicting data that indicates that a Betsey Dexter born either 1754 or 1768 marrried a Thomas Carpenter in 1801and that he died JUN1812 and then she married a Joseph Arnold on 30DEC1813. Thomas is listed as being born either 1733 or 1750. In the cemetery transcripts I have found the following: WK007, Arnold Lot, Columbia Ave., Warwick, RI ARNOLD BETSEY (DEXTER) 1768c - 24 DEC 1818 WK007 CARPENTER BETSEY 1791c - 14 NOV 1810 WK007 CARPENTER THOMAS 1750c - 6 JUN 1819 WK007 There's also some other Arnold's buried there but Joseph is not one of them! So in conclusion it looks like this Thomas & Betsey may have had a daughter Betsey born c1791. Gloria

Notes for Capt. Thomas Carpenter
Pawtuxet Village is unique in that its northern section is in the town of Cranston, while its southern section is in another town, Warwick.

1733: Thomas Carpenter was born to Silas and Christina Low Carpenter.

1762, June: His brother, Anthony Carpenter, was admitted as a freeman in Cranston, “Possessed of two small lotts of Land….., and is the eldest son of Silas Carpenter who is possessed of a small lot of land in the Right of his wife in said Town of Cranston frunting fifty feet on the highway that Leadeth  from    Pawtucket bridg to Providence and Sixty feet back with a small dwelling house thereon standing.” (Rhode Island Roots, V. # missing, pp. 18-19, searchable at American Ancestors)

1768: Thomas’s future wife, Elizabeth (Betsey) Dexter’s birthyear of 1768 is confirmed in the Dexter Genealogy, where she was listed as the 4th child of Jonathan and Alice Lowe Dexter.

1774 Census of Rhode Island: Cranston: Silas Carpenter, 2 males over 16  (Rhode Island Roots, article by Judith C. Harbold)    Low Carpenter (Anthony, son of Silas)  on same page, 1 male +16, 1 male -16, 1 female +16, 1 female -16

Island and Providence Plantations, at East Greenwich, on the last  Monday in February, 1779.

It is voted and resolved, that the sheriff of the county of Kings, or his deputy, immediately apprehend Waite Saunders, Thomas Carpenter and Peleg Hoxsie, who are charged with having carried on an illicit  commerce with the inhabitants of New Shoreham (Block Island), and bring  them before this Assembly to answer the said complaint.   RCRI by Bartlett, V.  8, 1776-177, p. 500
“on infomation of illicit trade between the island and the main” from A History of Block Island:1514-1876

1780: Thomas’s first cousin, Mary Carpenter, married Capt. Daniel Spelman, a ship captain. They settled in Providence and he and his sons eventually had a line of packets from Providence to Albany, New York. At that time grain and produce from New York were brought to southern New England by way of the Hudson River. Daniel’s parents and siblings lived in Granville, Massachusetts where Thomas Carpenter’s son Amos, my great-great grandfather grew up. (He was born in Albany/RensselaerCo., New York).   The Spelmans of Massachusetts were extremely close with the Rose family, whose daughter my Amos married. I believe it is possible that Thomas Carpenter may have been a part of all this).
(Packet trade generally refers to any regularly scheduled cargo, passenger and mail trade conducted by ship)

1782: Cranston, Providence Co., RI: Thomas Carpenter, tax list

1782 Cranston, RI Heads of Families:  Thomas Carpenter,  2 . . . 1 .1 . . . . .   total 4   (That would be 2 males under 16, 1 male 22-50,1 female 22-50.)  This would have been a first wife, because Betsey Dexter, the 2nd wife, would have been just 14 in this record.  These 2 sons would have been born after 1766.
Rhode Island Census of 1782   NEHGS Register, Vol. 128, p. 54

1785-1790: During this period, Thomas and Betsy Dexter married. Thet were 1st cousins,1R, through their Low sides. Betsy’s mother, Alice Dexter, was a Low, as was Thomas’s mother, Christina. Christina was Alice’s aunt.

1790 census, Cranston, Providence Co., RI:       Thomas Carpenter 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 2 females.   All the 3 males would have been born after 1775.  Listed on same page as many of his mother Christina’s Rhoads cousins.

1787: His son, Amos (my gg-grandfather) was born in Albany/Rensselear Co., New York. At an early age, he moved  (or was moved) to Granville, Massachusetts where Daniel Spellman’s family lived and he grew up there.  Could he have perhaps been placed as a child in one of the Spelman families, at the request of Daniel and Mary Carpenter Spelman?

Apparently, Thomas and family moved to Barrington by 1793. (His mother’s ancestors, the Lows, first settled in this town).
1793:  Barrington Town Tax, 1793, Thomas Carpenter  (Town tax assess’d on the estates & poles of the inhabitants in Barrington, AD 1793, The History of Barrington, p. 306)

To work on the highways on Monday, the 25 of June, 1798.  The History of Barrington, p. 450 Rhode Island by Thomas Williams Bicknell   Note: Thomas’s sister Mary married a John Horn and this Daniel was their son..

1800 census, Barrington, Bristol, Rhode Island, United States:
Thomas Carpintor: 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-16
Anthony Carpintor: 1 male -10, 1 male 26-45,  1 female -10, 1 female 26-45 (His brother Anthony’s son.)
Also in Barrington at this time: John Low, probably Thomas’s uncle,  and Mary Horn (Thomas’s sister). It definitely appeaars that close members of Thomas’s family were living here at the time.  His father , Silas, father of Thomas and Mary, and grandfather of Anthony, had moved to Barrington also.

1801: His father, Silas, formerly of Cranston, died at Barrington, RI on
May 23 1801 in 92nd year. Gazette posting.  Arnold Rhode Island VR v.13 , p. 250

Thomas and family returned to Cranston by 1810.
1810 census, Cranston, Prov. RI, Thomas Carpenter, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female, 16-26, 1 female 26-45
(His first cousin, Joseph Carpenter, was listed in the same census in Cranston as well. He named a son Amos, b. near the same time as my gg-gf, son of Thomas, was born. The name was repeated in others of that generation of cousins.)

The inscription on his tombstone, as read by me from a photo of the marker:

Apparently, the inscriptions of the marker are very difficult to read. Another source reports: 1750c-6 Jun 1819.  Warwick, RI, Cem. Arnold Lot,  Warwick Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Database Index (Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2003)

Providence in 1770 had a flourishing maritime trade, a merchant aristocracy, a few industries, a body of skilled artisans, a newspaper, a stagecoach line, and several public buildings. Fortunes of many of the merchants and ship owners had been built on the shipping of tea and sugar and molasses, rum, and slaves, as well as whaling. Tea, sugar, molasses and rum were examples of items which the English tried to tax and the Providence merchants preferred to import without paying the tax. The Joseph Bucklin Society: A National History Centre for the 1722 Gaspee Affair: Some Facts Regarding Providence at the Start of the Revolutionary War: http://bucklinsociety.net/colonial-history/providence-facts/
During the later part of the eighteenth century, Pawtuxet became one of the very active and significant ports in Narragansett Bay.  The mouth of the Pawtuxet River was a strategic location to settle, and gave boats a safe harbor and the village considerable importance in the triangular trade of the day, and shipyards for the coastal and West Indies trade were located here.  Slaves were introduced at this time. Ironically, the colony later prospered under the slave trade, by distilling rum to sell in Africa as part of a profitable triangular trade  in slaves and sugar between Africa, America and the /Caribbean.

Thomas never married Elizabeth Van Rensselaer. Amos was an illegitimate child. I believe she was expected to give him up soon after birth. Barbara C. Martin.

John, I have seen photos of that grave. They are all very difficult to read. Either there are 2 Thomas Carpenters in the Arnold lot, or two different people interpreted what they said in different ways. I, and others, have interpreted the marker to say 1733 - 1812 or 1813. Thomas (SR) had to die before his wife, Betsy, remarried at the end of 1813.  Barbara C. Martin.

Subject: Re: Amos Carpenter
Hello, John,
It's been awhile since we've tackled my elusive Carpenters. I hope you are doing well.
Still no concrete proof, but I do have some new insights on my Amos's ancestry. I feel good about this, and do believe it to be my line. The following is just the bare bones of what I have been seeing. I'm not even including any documentation but will do so later. I just wanted you to see what's going on in my southern woman brain!
Simply, and with not too much amplification nor any of my documentation:
Family records reported that Amos Carpenter’s father was Thomas Carpenter.
Amos was probably illegitimate. He was born in Rensselaer Co, New York in 1787, which is near the city of Albany, but at an early age moved to Granville, Hampden/Hampshire Co., MA. There were no Carpenters listed in the 1790 or 1800 census for Granville. What family did he live with?
He joined the Rose party in 1805 that migrated to Ohio and established the city of Granville.
In 1810, he married Susanna Rose, daughter of Lemuel Rose.
FTDNA confirmed that my brothers DNA suggested our Carpenter lineage might be the same as that of Kevin Carpenter, even to the one mutation from the original immigrant, William Carpenter.
We studied the results and discovered our first common ancester with Kevin was Silas Carpenter of Cranston, Rhode Island, b. In 1681 and d. In 1751. I researched all of his grandchildren for a possible Thomas, as the family records had shown. (His children’s names were well known already). I did indeed find a Thomas Carpenter, son of Silas’s son Silas, who might be our ancestor. But what connection did he have with Granville, MA?
In that same search, I, of course, found Kevin’s ancestor, Joseph. That confirmed for me that I was looking at the right family. Joseph of the DNA, and Thomas of confirmed genealogies, were first cousins!
Also, among the first cousins, I found a Mary Carpenter who had married a Daniel Spelman who was - drum rolls - from Granville, MA! They married in 1780 and settled in Providence, RI. The next year, he completed his Rev. War service and became a ship captain and spent almost the rest of his life in Providence and on the sea. He was called Capt. Daniel Spelman. Two sons became ship captains, as well as two sons-in-law. They were all called Captain as well.
Providence in 1770 had a flourishing maritime trade. Fortunes of many of the merchants and ship owners had been built on the shipping of tea and sugar and molasses, rum, and slaves, as well as whaling. The following was written about Joseph, the son of Daniel and Mary Carpenter Spelman: Brought up in a town where the principal interests were connected with the sea, and surrounded by its influences from childhood, he naturally became a seafaring man and master of vessels. He and his son,
Oliver, had a line of packets from Providence to Albany. At that time grain and produce from New York were brought to Southern New England by way of the Hudson River, which had not yet been crossed by a railroad.
Bingo!! I had wondered how Thomas Carpenter could have been in New York and fathered a baby. In one of the records I found for Thomas, he carried the title of Captain. I had at first though it to be a military rank, but could not find Rev. War records for him. He obviously was a ship captain, like all his cousin Mary’s Spelman family! And, yes, they made regular trips to Albany, New York, by way of the Hudson River.
(Amazingly, my gg-gf Amos secured a 3 year passage aboard a whaling ship for my great-grandfather, Stephen, when Stephen came of age!)
Granville records and history revealed that the Spelman and Rose families were extremely close. (My Amos married Susanna Rose). The 1800 E. Granville, MA census shows Aaron Spelman living three houses from his brother, Stephen. Stephen married Deborah Rose, cousin of Susannah. Aaron’s first wife was Elizabeth, sister of Susannah’s grandfather, Justus Rose. Aaron’s 2nd wife was the widow of Justus, Deborah. Justus and Deborah Rose were Susanna’s grandparents. Two households before Aaron was his brother, Timothy. Twenty years later, Timothy’s son Thomas would be a neighbor to Amos and Susanna in St. Albans, Ohio!
Just before Daniel Spelman died, he left Rhode Island and returned to Granville, MA and died in the home of his nephew, Stephen (perhaps son of the above Stephen).
One caveat:
Some believe that Thomas, son of Silas, was too old to have fathered a son in 1787. They do believe that he may have had a son named Thomas, who fathered my Amos. That may be the case, but I can’t find records for two Thomases in Cranston/Pawtuxet. Until I find differently, I am holding on to there being just one Thomas, but open ot another who could have been his son.
Therefore, I conclude that:
Amos’s granddaughter recorded that his name was Thomas.
History connects with history: That my Amos Carpenter married into the Rose family is in our records. That same Rose family was very close to Daniel Spelman’s family, which is a part of established history.
Daniel Spelman would have been acquainted with his wife Mary Carpenter’s Providence family.
Capt.Thomas Carpenter, Mary’s first cousin, may have worked with the Spelmans in the shipping industry and had passage to New York where Amos was conceived.
Science, through the FTDNA program, confirms that we probably match with Kevin and consequently, his ancestors, who these are.
Thomas Carpenter, son of Silas (or a son named Thomas) is my Amos’s father.

544. Joseph Carpenter

This descendant line provided by Jack Schoedinger
in Jan 2009.

Joseph, according to his pension application, was born in Cranston, Rhode Island on April 2, 1756 and enlisted at East Greenwich, Rhode Island for military service during the period of March 1, 1776 to the winter of 1779. His service of 16 months was performed in Capt. Spencer's and Capt. Sullivan's expeditions.
He was first mentioned in land records in 1789 in South Scituate, Rhode Island when he bought one-third of the farm of his father-in-law, William Knight, and in 1798 he purchased the remaining land which was willed to William Knight's grandsons William, Job and Christopher, the sons of Christopher Sr.  The Federal Census of 1790 gives Joseph's residence as South Scituate with two males over 16, two under 16 and three females.
Like so many other families all his sons, with the exception of Charles, left the farm and migrated into the new lands of northeast Pennsylvania. Joseph and Esther remained on the Carpenter Road Farm,  where many of their family were buried, until their death. They had eleven children.

NOTE: Was a Benjamin (b. abt. 1775) a missing child of this family? Mon, 9
Oct 2000 From: Jack A Schoedinger I have , for some
time, been looking for the ancestors of one Benjamin Carpenter b. Abt. 1775 in
Coventry, Rhode Island. I recently found that after his wife,  Freelove Baily,
gave birth to their first child, they relocated ( Abt. 1801) to Clinton Twp,
Wyoming County, Pennsylvania (around Factoryville). Eventually, the family
spread into Lackawanna County and , pretty much remained there. In reviewing
information about this area I found there was a "Carpenter Town", with a
"Carpenter Cemetery" in Lackawanna County, PA east of Dalton. The cemetery is
located near the intersection of rt. 524 and 347 near highway 81.
Can any body help me with information about the town and/or who is buried in
the cemetery.

Well, I am still working on Benjamin, but with a little luck I did find
him in an 1810 Tunkhannock Township, Pennsylvaina census. I feel this is
the Benjamin I have been searching for because his first son Peleg, who
married in 1821, showed up in a 1830 census of this Township. I also
checked some maps of the area and found a place called Carpenters Hollow
about 2 miles Southwest of Factoryville. This area is now in Clinton Twp.
but may have been in Tunkhannock in the early 1800's.
During this little venture I also found a little town named "Carpenter
Town" and a small "Carpenter Cemetery" Northeast of the city of Dalton.
The town site is now in the Lackawanna State Park, so I sent an e-mail to
them asking if they had any information about it. An Angela Lambert,
Environmental Education Specialist, answered my reply and is interested
in the background of the town. She noted that the only reference she had
found was an article written in "The Scrantonian" Sun, May 31,1981 titled
"Lackawanna State Park is Hub of Summer Activity by William P. Lewis,
executive director of the Lackawanna Historical Society. It mentioned
that a Rev. Rolla Carpenter, a country preacher, opened a small general
store in Carpenter Town about 1860.
As for the cemetery, she stopped there on her way to work and wrote down
some headstone data for me that had the Carpenter name on them. This is
what she sent me:
"First stone I saw had a main stone that said Carpenter with two smaller
stones off to the sides, the names on these were: J.W. Wheaton 1851-1917

were difficult to read due to weathering. While I was their a young man
stopped by to say that he and some of his friends took the initiative to
clean up the cemetery this past year, they cleared out a lot of the
overgrowth, his name was Mike Stabinski and his friends were Jim Wilk and
Kyle Christian. Mr. Christian and Mr. Wilk live directly behind the
cemetery in a housing development and Mr. Stabinski said he believed that
land that the housing is on may have been owned by the Carpenter family
orginally. Mr. Stabinski also said the Boyarsky
from the Cemetery mow the front grass every year. "
I have not yet tied these names to individuals in  my files, so I
thought you may have better luck. I believe the Carpenters listed above
are related and lived in or near Carpenter Town. I would appreciate it,
if you could check and see if you can identify what branch of the
Carpenter family tree they came from.
Have a good day,
Jack Schoedinger.

Possible duplicate but also probable child who died young.

1187. Henry Carpenter

Henry and his wife migrated to Pennsylvania after 1810. He purchased land from Westcott Stone that was deeded in 1814 and described as "on the small waters of the Tunkhannock creek, 78 acres, 20 perches" and was near that of his brother Amos.  Henry remained there for about a year and on the arrival of Joseph he elected to return to Rhode Island and deeded his land over to Joseph. He and his family lived in various places. Henry is listed in the 1830 United States Census in South Scituate and deeded with his wife in Cranston Rhode Island in 1831 and 1833. Henry and his wife than showed up in Foster Rhode Island where in 1856 one Olney Paine deeded to Henry Carpenter of Sterling, Connecticut 200 acres on Turnpike Road. On February 18, 1861 Thomas and Chloe Fuller of Foster deeded to Amey Carpenter, yeoman, of Foster, 80 acres in Foster. This deed was witnessed by Henry and George S. Tillingh. Henry's will was made about 1858 when his wife Achsah died and was probated on his death in 1862 with everything to Amey Hopkins. Henry is buried on Old Plainfield Pike in Foster with two children of Varnum and Amey (Fuller) and one unmarked grave. Based on these transactions it is obvious that Henry had a second wife Amey.

"John, you have been helping me with my illusive Carpenters - sending me
files, etc. There are four of we distant cousins (met on the NET) who
have been working on this. Well, Wes just returned from a trip and found
a book in the RI Genealogical Library at 121 Hope Street in Providence.
He found a book entitled "Descendants of William Carpenter of
Providence". It is actually a typed paper by Ruth Adair and Mary Carpenter
(sisters) in 1975." (Published Quincy, MA 1975)  Penny.
The data submitted on this John's descendants fit nicely with the known data.
Penny, - Wes and the two others not named have done a good job.  JRC 7/20/99.
