Subject: Sally Carpenter and Niles Fairbanks
Dear John:
Hello and Happy Thanksgiving.
I just found a connection to the Fairbanks line (a family who lived in my area of Gloversville/Johnstown). I'm hoping that you can help me find the parents and siblings of Sally Carpenter. She's got to be related to one of them from around here...maybe even my line. And believe it or not there are TWO Sally Carpenter's who married into the Fairbanks line. A connection to either would be great.
This is the information that I have so far:       (SEE SECOND DESCENDANT SHEET)

Descendants of Niles H. Fairbanks
Generation No. 1

1. NILES H.3 FAIRBANKS (REMINGTON2, WILLIAM1) was born 1811 in Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., NY. He married SALLY M. CARPENTER. She was born 1816. On her daughter's death certificate it stes that Sally was from the Township of Johnstown. On another daughter's death certificate it states Bleecker, NY (which is in the Township of Johnstown). I'll keep looking for a will that might mention her.

Children of NILES FAIRBANKS and SALLY CARPENTER are:

i. MINERVA4 FAIRBANKS, b. May 11, 1842; d. February 09, 1914.

ii. JOHN FAIRBANKS, b. 1844.

iii. JANE FAIRBANKS, b. May 05, 1846; d. March 20, 1925.

576. Benjamin Carpenter

Number 1884 in the Carpenter Family in America Book of 1912.

E-MAIL: From: "John F. Chandler"  09/04/2001
Subject:   [CARPENTER] Carpenters of South Kingstown, RI
Over the long weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Rhode Island, nominally to spend time at the beach.  While there, I managed to squeeze in a trip to the Perryville Church Cemetery (historic cemetery #47 of South Kingstown), and I located the gravestones of Benjamin and Thankful Carpenter.  (It wasn't easy -- the stones are of marble and considerably weathered, and Benjamin's has fallen over and is half overgrown with wild thyme.)  I knew they were supposed to be there because they are listed in the RI Cemetery Database, but it's a far different thing to
see them directly, and, besides, I've heard two dissenting reports that gave different dates from those in the database.  At any rate, I can now confirm that the database is correct for these and some other Carpenter
stones that I saw there.  What I saw:
Benjamin Carpenter, died 1840 Sep 18, aged 76 his wife Thankful T. Carpenter, died 1826 Dec 27, aged 57.
[This Benjamin was probably the son of Thomas Carpenter who died in Exeter, RI, in 1815, and whose estate was administered by "Benjamin Carpenter of South Kingstown".  This Thomas in turn is rumored to be the same Thomas whose birth is entered in the West Greenwich vital records as 1738 Aug 3.]
Benjamin Carpenter, [who happens to be their son, but is buried in a  different area] died 1869 Jul 11, aged 62y 8m 25d his wife Sarah Carpenter, died 1875 Sep 15, aged 62y 9m 29d some offspring of this pair which I didn't write down (it was getting dark) all on one monument:
Thomas A. Carpenter, born 1836 Feb 14, died 1911 Aug 16
his wife Olympia I. Kerr, born 1842 Jul 19, died 1919 May 18
their son William B. Carpenter, born 1861 Jul 20, died 1932 Nov 29
Hezekiah Willard, 1862-1936
his wife Mary N. Carpenter, [evidently daughter of Thomas] 1864-1957
I hope this helps someone.
John Chandler

Thankful See Notes Thompson

NOTE: The Carpenter Family in America Book of 1912, on pages 330 and 331 gives the descent of her son/grandson of number 1884a Benjamin Carpenter.
The ancestry of her husband Benjamin IS AT ODDS with submitted material and the 1912 Book.  Thus I am allowing two marriages seemingly to the same person to reflect the differences.  Where the commonality is the closest without conflict, I will merge data on this descendancy line.  JRC Feb 2001.

... Here, in the early summer of this year, the first class, forming the original nucleus of the
present Methodist Episcopal Church, was organized, with only five members.
They were as follows : Leader, Levi Frisbie ; members, Sally Frisbie, Amy Hatch, Lydia Dunton, Clara Low. To these were soon after added : John Low, Mrs. Goodspeed, Anna Goodspeed, Mercy Goodspeed, John Ferris, Patience Ferris, Mrs. Widow Martin, Lucy Loveland, Betsey Farnsworth. The place of worship was at the school-house above named, and Fisher's Mills occasionally, and subsequently at the school-house in the south part of the
village (now the residence of Dewit Hooper), but this was usually occupied on the Sabbath by the Baptists as their place of worship. The social meetings were held at Frisbie's, Ferris's and Low's, near the present residence of Henry Shelden. The quarterly meetings, which drew the people together from all parts of the circuit, where sometimes held in Captain Frisbie's barn, occasionally in the grove adjoining the late residence of William Frisbie, sometimes in Judge Hatch's hall (1821 N. Allen), and later, in 1830-31, they were held once or twice in the Baptist church, which stood on the hill opposite the residence of A. Carpenter.

Subject: Carpenter burial grounds
Good evening Mr. Carpenter,
Our names are Scott Jaworski and Michael Taylor. We reside at 123 Lyndon Road in Cranston, RI 02905. Our property is located next door to the Carpenter burial site.
For the past ten years, we have been maintaining the Carpenter property. This includes mowing, organic fertilizer treatments, damaged tree removals, and the overall beautification of the property. We pay $740 per year to maintain the site and have paid an additional $2300 ($1000 just last week) to remove the mentioned damaged trees. That is $9700 spent over the past 10 years on this property. The City of Cranston refuses to maintain the property, which is why we do it.
We write to you today because we have notified the City that we would like to claim 816 square feet of this property as our own under RI State Law 34-7-1, which pertains to adverse possession of property. The Cranston Historical Society has told us that they are not in charge of the property. Our City Councilman and the Constituent Affairs Office have notified us and explained that in order for us to obtain this property, we need your family's permission to have it deeded to us.
As you can see in the attached pictures, our property line begins at the beginning of the fence. We would like to extend out 12 feet to the third post and 68 feet down to the sidewalk, which is 816 square feet. The monument would be a safe 10 feet away from our proposed new property line.
Why do we want to acquire this land? We want to put a straight line of flowering shrubs down the property line, shrinking the cemetery plot to hinder people from using it. The people in our neighborhood believe that they are entitled to use this lot for gatherings. We disagree as the people paying to maintain it. We have even seen kids climbing on the monument, which is completely disrespectful. We would then like to put up a cemetery fence around the monument to keep people away from it and have the area clearly marked as an historic cemetery. We want you to understand that we are not just looking to snatch 816 square feet of land. We are looking to preserve this property and make it beautiful. Since we are paying for the land as it is, we don't see why we should not own it and rightfully pay taxes on it. We would continue to maintain the rest of the property, of course.
If this is something that you would agree to, we would need a notarized, certified letter granting us permission to acquire the discussed property. We will mention that it is within our legal right to claim the property outright, which we are prepared to do, but we wanted to confer with you first out of respect.
Should you like to discuss the matter, I can be reached at 401-837-4822.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
Michael Taylor
