Irma was a faithful and devoted member of the Charleston Bible Church. She was actively involved in many of its ministries including the Phoebe Women's Fellowship Group and the Awana Youth Group. For many years she served as church treasurer, meticulously making sure that every penny was accounted for.

Irma cherished her role as a homemaker as well as her family - each and every one of them. She was a wonderful cook and took hospitality to a new level. The door to her home was always open - not only to friends and family but also to others as she and Vernon often invited missionaries to stay with them. Irma enjoyed being with Vernon often helping him on their Cumberland County farm or traveling with him when it was time to take the hogs to market. Her unique ability to keep things organized resulted in an orderly household where she kept things running smoothly.

The love and affection which was generously showered upon her family was always given unconditionally and her generosity, kindness and contagious smile created for her a multitude of friends. Irma always remembered to give thanks to God for her many blessings and was a woman who lived her life as a role model for others - devoting herself to her faith, her family and her friends. She enriched the lives of all who knew and loved her.

Mary is a 1949 graduate of Charleston High School. She worked all of her life except for the past couple of years. She started at Brown Shoe Company in Charleston; in the mid 1960s she went to beauty school and became a certified beautician. When Frank retired as a chiropractor in 1984, they moved to Florida where Mary continued to work in various salons and was especially favored by many of the Floridian “Snowbirds.”

During World War II, Frank B. Hodges was a Merchant Mariner. When they moved to Florida, Frank became a charter member of the Southwest Florida Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans (AMMV) which conducted 10 luncheon meetings per year. After he turned 80, he quit driving and Mary chauffeured him to the meetings and ate with the group. After Frank died in 2009, Mary continued to attend the luncheons and as a widow of a Merchant Mariner was elected to the presidency, a position she held for seven years and was forced to retire in 2016 by the cancer which eventually caused her to “cross the bar” as the Merchant Mariners describe death.

She was an avid bowler and once introduced to the game joined two leagues a week and often competed in the WIBC national tournaments.

She had a tremendous sense of humor and will be dearly missed by her friends and relatives.

A memorial service will be held in Charleston, Illinois at a later date. Mary was cremated and her cremains were taken to the coordinates on the Gulf of Mexico where Frank’s cremains were taken previously.

A local memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in North Fort Myers, FL.

10177. Jacob "Jake" Carpenter

Jacob Carpenter was born 4 Jan 1833 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).

Jacob was probably named for his grandfather, Jacob Carpenter.

Jacob was known in his later years as "Uncle Jake" and is most famous for his diary, recording he deaths of his relatives and other neighbors, now referred to as "Uncle Jake Carpenter's Anthology of Death on Three Mile Creek", or just as his "Anthology of Death".

Jacob was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census, and was with them in 1850 in Yancey Co, NC.

Jacob married Evaline Pyatte in Yancey Co, NC on 15 Mar 1855. She was a child of Joseph Pyatte Jr and Jean Brooks.  Evaline's brother Leander Pyatte was married to Frances Matilda Carpenter, Jacob's Aunt.

Jacob and family were listed on the 1860 census in Yancey County, NC between his cousin Alfred Carpenter and his grandmother Margaret, widow of Jacob Sr. Jacob's parents were just three houses away.

Jacob and family were listed on the 1870 census in Mitchell County, in Toe River Township, just two houses from his parents.

Jacob "Uncle Jake" Carpenter
Birth: Jan. 4, 1833

Death: Mar. 10, 1920
Three Mile
Avery County
North Carolina, USA
He was born January 4, 1833 on Three Mile Creek, N.C. and at the age of 22, married Evaline Pyatte. Jacob Carpenter II, affectionately called Uncle Jake, is a well known man in this area of western North Carolina because of a type of diary he kept, which is now known as "Uncle Jake Carpenter's Anthology of Death." Jake called it his "Son-of-a-Gun Book" or his "Jot-em-down-Book." It was a red-backed account ledger where Jake noted when someone in the local area died. He would write the person's name, date of death and a brief note about the deceased. From 1845 until 1920 he recorded the deaths of many of the local citizens with his limited knowledge of spelling or grammar.

10178. Alexander L. "Alec" Carpenter

Alexander L. Carpenter was born 5 Nov 1834 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911). I don't know who Alexander might have been named for, nor what his middle initial of "L" stands for.

Alexander was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census, and with them in 1850.

Alexander Carpenter married Kesiah Vance on 2 Apr 1857 in Watauga Co, NC. She was a daughter of Flemming and Ellender Vance.

Alexander and family were in Watauga Co, NC for the 1860 census.
