Mel was born on the family farm near Revillo, SD, on November 21, 1926, son of Harry J. and Cecil J. (Ede) Schweer, and was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Milbank, SD. The family moved to the Ede family farm east of Plainfield, IA, in 1934. Mel was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church , Waverly, IA, in 1940. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1944 and joined the U.S. Navy in November. He served as a Radar Instructor at Navy Pier in Chicago until he was discharged in 1946. He attended Iowa State College on the GI bill, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950.
After four years with Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, Mel worked at Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Co. in Iowa City for 27 years. His engineering expertise, his care for people, and his commitment to the Christian faith motivated his coworkers to nominate him for the "Boss of the Year" award from the Iowa City Jaycees. In 1982 he joined Linn County Electric Co-Operative until he retired in 1992. After retirement he was a volunteer tax consultant at the Senior Centers in Mankato, MN, Waterloo, and Iowa City.
Mel enjoyed maintaining the family cars and was a member of the Iowa Valley Antique Car Club. He was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, serving as Elder and Chair of several committees. He served as President of the Iowa City Jaycees and the Johnson County Thrivent Board of Directors, and Chairman of the Board for Troop 204 of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of Iowa City Old Capitol Kiwanis and enjoyed games of bridge or euchre with friends.

Lila O. Carpenter, 98, of Plainfield, Iowa passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2015 at the Tripoli Nursing Home in Tripoli.Lila Olive Carpenter was born on October 1, 1916, the daughter of Guy and Oma (Horn) Bucknell in rural Floyd County near Charles City, Iowa. She attended rural schools and graduated from Charles City High School with the class of 1934. On June 20, 1939, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Carpenter in Charles City, Iowa. Later, she graduated with a teaching degree from Wartburg College. Lila enjoyed teaching for 35 years: 6 years in rural schools, 4 years at Plainfield, and 25 years at Shell Rock where she retired in May of 1986.
She was a member of the Horton Baptist Church where she was active as a Sunday School Teacher and Bible school teacher, and took part in other church activities.
Survivors are her daughters, Leta (Larry) Hargrove of Plainfield, Iowa and Lorene (Wayne) Stoll of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; son-in-law, Ken Haglund of Minnesota; sister, Laura Johnson of Wichita, Kansas and sister-in-law, Ruby Bucknell of Charles City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd Carpenter in 1972; daughter, Loma Haglund; 2 brothers, Lynn and Lloyd Bucknell; grandson, Michael Mannen and brother-in-law, Russell Johnson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly with her grandson, Kevin Haglund officiating. Burial will follow in the Horton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until 11:00 am on Thursday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the family and online condolences for Lila may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home of Waverly is in charge of services for Lila Carpenter.

Leta Ann Hargrove, 71, of Plainfield, Iowa, died Monday, December 4, 2017, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.Leta was born to Lloyd and Lila (Bucknell) Carpenter on February 14, 1946, in Charles City, Iowa. She attended grade school in Horton, graduated from Plainfield High School in 1964 and attended Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
While in college Leta enjoyed working for the Billy Graham Crusade. She then moved with her parents to California.With her first marriage in 1968, she had five children: LaNae, Linda, Michael, Lissa and Matthew. On August 6, 1988, Leta was united in marriage to Larry Hargrove in Huntington Beach, California.
During her life Leta enjoyed working as an executive assistant, volunteering at church and local hospitals, and helping with the family owned and operated Mr. Movies video stores, LIR Electronics store, and her favorite - Tropical Sno, which operated in the Midwest as well as California and Arizona.
Arizona was near and dear to her heart, as Larry and Leta spent many wonderful years traveling in their fifth wheel RV. Being able to travel was something that she and Larry looked forward to every chance they got.Leta enjoyed, shopping with her daughters, playing bingo, motorcycle rides, spending time with her family, and puzzles especially during the 7 years she cared for her mother in Iowa.
Leta’s memory is honored by her husband, Larry Hargrove of Plainfield, Iowa; four children, LaNae (Robert) Christenson of St. Michael, Minnesota; Linda (Jayson) Gregor of Delano, Minnesota; Lissa (Shaun) Decker of Waterloo, Iowa; and Matthew (Rachael) Mannen of Lakeville, Minnesota; three step-children, Lisa (Jim) Swift, Tonya (Greg) Hardy, and Carrie Zanoni all of Michigan; and fifteen grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Lloyd and Lila Carpenter; a son, Michael Mannen; and a sister, Loma Haglund.
Leta’s wishes were to be cremated. There will be a private celebration of her life at their home on December 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Memorials can be sent to the Hargrove family, 1387 130th Street, P.O. Box 186, Plainfield, Iowa 50666 which will then be presented to the Waverly Health Center’s EMT Department where Leta enjoyed volunteering.Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly assisted the family.

Ruby M. Witt, 98, of Waterloo, died Monday, March 22 at Hubbard Care Center, Hubbard.
She was born December 26, 1911 in Douglas Township, daughter of Frank and Minnie Reed Carpenter. She married the Reverand Fred R. Witt on March 3, 1946 in Horton. He died April 27, 1992.
Mrs. Witt attended Northwestern College, Minneapolis, Minnesota for a year. She taught piano and was a member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church.
Survived by one son, Lavern R. (Barbara) of Altoona; two daughters, Shirley (Jim) Axtell of Iowa Falls, and Ardell (Gary) French of Bloomfield; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Lucille Carpenter of Clarksville.
Preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Ralph Carpenter; and one sister, Fern Bakker.
Services 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, with burial in Horton Cemetery, Horton. Public visitation from noon until services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lucille Elva Edmonds Carpenter

Death: Sep. 29, 2011 Clarksville Butler County Iowa, USA Lucille Elva Carpenter, 92, of Horton, Iowa, died on September 29, 2011 at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, Iowa. Lucille was born on July 19, 1919, in Menomonie, Wisconsin, the daughter of Claude W. and Elva (Dunlap) Edmonds. She attended school in rural Menomonie and graduated from high school in 1937. She was united in marriage to Ralph Carpenter on March 3, 1939, at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Menomonie. She was a full-time mother until their family was raised. She then worked at Wartburg College and also at the Bartels Home. The couple farmed for more than 30 years in the Horton area, retiring in 1970. They were Plainfield residents almost 30 years before moving to the Waverly Manor in 1999. After her husband's death in 2005, and due to poor health, she moved to the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville in 2010. Lucille accepted Jesus as her Savior at an early age. She was a devout Christian and a faithful member of Horton Baptist Church. Whenever the doors were open, the family was in attendance. Lucille had a very sweet spirit; she loved family and friends, making friends easily. She really enjoyed playing board games when the family would come home. Lucille is survived by her son, David (Patti) Carpenter of Crown Point, Indiana; four daughters, June (Dale) Siewert of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Janice (Gerald) Schindler of Marion, Iowa; Maxine (Ronald) Stewart of Athens, Georgia and Joyce (Paul) Oetken of Greenville, Michigan; 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and one sister, Lois Rassbach of Menomonie. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ralph, one brother, three sisters and one granddaughter, Arianna Oetken. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Horton Baptist Church, Horton. Burial will be held in the Horton Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home, Waverly. Memorials may be directed to the family.
