Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia.He was born May 8, 1926 in Fairplain, West Virginia a son of the late Johnny Hoyt & Beulah Cobb Carpenter. He was an ironworker for Welding Inc. in Charleston, West Virginia for many years and formerly worked as a coal miner. He was a member of the Gandeeville United Methodist Church and VFW Post 5783 in Spencer, West Virginia. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a veteran of World War Two and Korea and received a Purple Heart for his service.He is survived by his wife, Maxine Garnet Ellis Carpenter; a son and daughter-in-law, James “Jimmy†and Betty Carpenter of Gandeeville; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Jennifer and Jamie; five great-grandchildren, Zack, Kenny, Payton, Arianna and Zander; five sisters, Irene Harris of Cicerone, West Virginia, Maxine Lilly of Hardeeville, South Carolina, Erline Tolley of Elizabeth, West Virginia, and Octavia “Toots†Cox and Mary Lou Hargus, both of Harmony; and one brother, Gerald Carpenter, also of Harmony.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jetty, George and Ferris; and a sister, Pauline.Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Revs. John Lowe and Jerry Malona officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. Visiting hours are from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Carpenter, 76, of Spencer, died Nov. 24, 2007, at Roane General Hospital, Spencer, surrounded by his family.He was born Oct. 18, 1931, in Harmony, a son of the late Johnny Hoyt and Beulah Cobb Carpenter.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Ferris Carpenter.He was a tool and die maker, a businessman and a farmer. He was also an ordained Baptist minister and had pastored at several local Roane County churches. He was an active member of the Harmony Baptist Association for many years with his church membership being at Henry's Fork Baptist Church in Tariff. He had more recently been attending the Boggs Fork Community Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Naomi Jewell Nichols Carpenter; one daughter, Stephanie Carpenter of Spencer and her fiancé Steven Bolte of Spencer; three sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Janifer Carpenter of Spencer, Ron and Caroline Carpenter of Knoxville, Tenn., and Josh and Kim Carpenter, also of Spencer; five grandsons, Adam, Solomon and Jacob Carpenter, Kyle and Alec Crihfield and an honorary grandson, Lewis Bolte; and two granddaughters, Ally Rey and Naomi Jo Carpenter. Also surviving are two brothers, Johnny H. Carpenter Jr. of Gandeeville and Gerald Carpenter of Harmony; six sisters, Irene Harris of Cicerone, Pauline Bee of Parkersburg, Maxine Lilly of Hardeeville, S.C., Erline Tolley of Canton, Ohio, and Octavia "Toots" Cox and Mary Lou Hargus, both of Harmony.The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Pastor Charles Davis and the Rev. Smith Epling officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery on the Carpenter farm on Boggs Fork Road near Spencer with graveside military rites conducted by several area Roane County veterans groups.Visiting hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home
