He was a disabled U.S. Army veteran
of World War II during which he served
in Europe and was awarded four bronze
service stars and the Purple Heart.
Deater attended Trinity Baptist
Church.
In addition to his parents, he was
preceeded in death by a son, Kenneth
Ray Carpenter and brothers, Milligan,
Moile, Lester and Lambert Carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred
Lee Singleton Carpenter of the home;
daughters and their husbands, Elaine
and Edward Crowe and Donna and Paul
Patton, all of Morganton N.C.

Mildred "Mid" Singleton Carpenter, 88, of Morganton died Sunday, February 17, 2013 following a period of declining health. Born in Avery County, NC on November 18, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Sam Singleton and Ellafair Moody Singleton. Mid was a long-time member of Trinity Baptist Church. She worked as a nurse's aide at Broughton Hospital for over 20 years and then at Autumn Care of Drexel.

Mid is survived by her daughters, Elaine Crowe and Donna Patton and her husband, Paul; grandsons, Dallas Patton, Dennis Crowe, and Pat Patton, all of Morganton; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Hughes Pittman of Avery County, NC; and a number of nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents, Mid was preceded in death by her husband, Deater Dallas Carpenter; a son, Kenneth Ray Carpenter; brothers, Rob, Inley, Earl, and Ray Singleton; sisters, Hazel Greene, Bessie Carpenter, Mary Wright, and Edith Love; and a son-in-law, Edward Crowe.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Moneyham officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Essie Buchanan ( Wanda ) Carpenter, 70, of
Crossnore, died in the Brian Center of Spruce
Pine on August 3.
A native and lifelong resident of Avery County,
she was a daughter of the late Wess and Marie
Stulls Buchanan and a member of the Big
Meadows Baptist Church. She worked in the
cafeteria of the Crossnore Elementery School
for many years. She was preceded in death by
a daughter, Shirley Jean Carpenter, and a
great-grandchild, Dennis Lee Barnard.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law,
Dean and Debbie Oaks, her son and
daughter-in-law, Eddie and Netia Carpenter,
her special sister, Gladys Parker, grandchildren
Nathan and Jason Oaks, Misty McGraw and
Dustin and Kayla Barnard, all of Newland;
several nieces and nephews; and a host of
friends.
Funeral services with the Rev. Hugh Hall
officiating were conducted in the Grandfather
Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home

Amos Clyde Carpenter

Mr. Amos Clyde Carpenter, 73, of Glen Alpine, N.C. went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born in Burke County on Feb. 1, 1935, he was the son of the late Robert and Eva Callaway Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter was a retiree from Broughton Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Norman Carpenter of the home; two daughters, Sheila Norville and her husband, Junior, of Drexel and Sandra Oaks and her husband, Andrew, of Hildebran; two sons, Jerry Carpenter of Valdese and David Carpenter of Morganton; his grandchildren, Holly Rose and her husband, Jarrett, of Drexel, Erica Huffman and her husband, Kelly, of Lincolnton, Whitney Norville of Drexel, Kara Carpenter of Morganton and Brandon and Ashley Carpenter of Valdese; great-grandchildren, Chelsie Rose and MaKenzie Norville; brothers, Tommy, Andy and Mason of Crossnore; and sisters, Elwanda Cook of Clemmons, Della Mae Ellis of Oak Hill and Levonda Pyatte of Holden Beach.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and J.L. Carpenter.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese with the Rev. Michael Brown officiating.

Interment will follow in the Glen Alpine Community Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.

Memorials may be made to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Cancer Unit, No. 1 Medical Ctn. Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

Schyler "Bud" Carpenter
Schyler "Bud" Carpenter, 69, of Henderson Mill Road, Morganton, NC, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, January 5, 2009 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, NC after an extended illness.

Born in Avery County, NC on October 24, 1939, he was the son of the late Schyler Anderson Carpenter, Sr. and Bertie Stamey Carpenter.

He was a member of Arney's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Fort Hood, TX. He worked for Drexel Heritage for 26 years.

Bud is survived by his wife of 21 years, Fannie Bell Hembree Carpenter of the home; a son, Paul Anderson Carpenter and fiancée, Tracy Byrd, of Morganton; a step-son, Dwight Street of Morganton; grandsons, Tyler Anderson Carpenter and Justin Street; brothers, Loyd Carpenter of OH, Max Carpenter of McDowell County, NC, and Russell Carpenter of Catawba County, NC; and sisters, Ellen Carpenter of McDowell County and Carolyn Weller of Catawba County.

In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2009 in Arney's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Neal Brantley officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Sossoman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 2608, Morganton, NC 28680 to assist with funeral expenses.

Carolyn C. Weller, 66, of Catawba, NC died Friday, October 14, 2011 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born in Avery County, NC on November 5, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Schyler McKincie Carpenter and Bertie Stamey Carpenter.
Carolyn attended Christian Outreach Center Church. She was a determined, strong-minded woman who loved watching her soap operas.
Carolyn is survived by her husband of 33 years; a daughter; two brothers; a sister; and several nieces, nephews, and close family friends.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by seven brothers and four sisters.
The memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, October 17, 2011 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home.
