Notes

1151. John Carpenter

NOTE:
Of the Cotleb Zimmerman line.
SEE: Genealogical and Historical Record of the Carpenter Family, by James Usher
Page 30 regarding The Carpenter Family of Long Island and NY.
Usher was wrong.

NOTE:
U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935 for Samuel Carpenter, page 38 shows family of sons Joseph and John with birth and some death records and spouses as known.
See under MISC PICS: RIN 12674 Joseph Carpenter QMR1681-1935
The image has sparse info on this John, but more on children.
John Carpenter of Samuel & Elizabeth (Willson) Carpenter married Elizabeth. The children seems mostly cited from the Munsey (?) Meeting notes.
PLEASE NOTE:  There is a X over this portion of the image. But no comment or clarification is made. I assume, until further information is found, that the children listed are his. JRC Mar 2018.

BOOK:
History of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania : including its aboriginal history; the colonial and revolutionary periods; early settlement and subsequent growth; organization and civil administration; the legal and medical professions; internal improvements, past and present history of Williamsport, manufacturing and lumber interests, religious, educational, and social development, geology and agriculture, military record, sketches of boroughs, townships, and villages, portraits and biographies of pioneers and representative citizens, etc., etc. by Meginness, John F. (John Franklin), 1827-1899
** The pdf version of this book cites 198 "Carpenter" hits. On page 84 or 7/198 it cites the original settlers of Muncy township. Several of them were conspicuous participants in the stirring times of that
period, and their names frequently occur in history, but the majority at this lapse of time are unknown. The following list embraces the names of all who were bona fide settlers in 1774, when it was returned by the assessor to the commissioners at Sunbury:  That includes Joseph Carpenter and John Carpenter.

Second Branch
Enos Lundy, Sr., and Rachel Carpenter
of Newmarket, Ontario.
Enos Lundy, Sr., son of Joseph and Susanna, married Rachel Carpenter; born 29th day of 6th mo., 1760; died in 1829 at Whitchurch, York County, Ontario; daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Carpenter of Pennsylvania.
In 1785, Enos Lundy, Sr., produced to the Exeter Monthly Meeting, Berks county, Pa., a certificate of membership from the Kingwood Monthly Meeting in Hunterdon county, N. J.; and in 1789 a certificate of membership came from the same place for his wife and children. A portion of the Exeter Meeting was set off and organized as the Millville Meeting; Enos and his family were assigned to the new Meeting. Enos served on a commitee in Friend's Society at Millville, Pa., in 1796. On 22 day of 12 mo., 1798, his daughters Elizabeth and Susanna requested to become members of the Millville Meeting; and at the same time Enos requested that his son Isaac and his daughter Ruth (minors) become members. In the spring of 1805, Enos and his family emigrated to Canada, and settled in York county, Ontario, two miles or less from the village of Newmarket, on the lot of land afterwards owned by his son Isaac; it being lot No. 26 in the second concession of the township of Whitchurch; and there Enos and Rachel lived until they were laid to rest in Friend's yard on Yonge Street.

2446. Jeremiah Lundy

He married twice and had children by each wife. He lived first in Uxbridge and then in Whitechurch, and Tecumseh and lastly to Scott Township where he died at the age of 76. He was a tall slight figure; he was in the British army during the War of 1812 and took part in several battles. He was also engaged in the Rebellion of 1837 where he lost his rifle but escaped being caught.

2450. Sarah Lundy

Sarah married Joseph Mowder and they lived and died on Lot No. 25 in the second concession of Whitechurch. They left a large family. They include Mary Bostwick and Henry Mowder of Pine Orchard, Ontario, Canada.

1172. Amos Carpenter

PARENTS:
Descendant testing indicates genetic descendants are a Group 2 (Providence, RI) and not a Group 3 line (Rehoboth, MA).

Barbara Jean Carpenter Martin of Baker, FL provided information on this line,
starting with this Amos in April 1998.  She is pursuing the lead in an effort
to provide proof. She believed that Amos was born in Rensselaer County, NY.

OBIT:
Amos Carpenter
· Birth: APR 1787 in Rensselaer Co., New York
· Death: 28 MAR 1858 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio
· Burial: 31 MAR 1858 Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, Green Lawn Cem.
Obituary in the March 29, 1858 Ohio State Journal states: "Mr. Carpenter was born in Rensselaer county, N. Y., from whence, at an early age, he migrated to Hamden County, Massachusetts, and in the year 1805, made one of the party of resolute adventurers composing the Granville Colony, who purchased and removed to the township of Granville, Licking county, Ohio." E-MAIL: (additional) Wed, 15 Mar 2000 From: Barbara Martin
I am seeking the parents of Amos Carpenter, b., April, 1787, Rensselaer Co.,
New York. At "an early age" he moved to Granville, Massachusetts. At age 18,
he joined the Licking Land Company that settled Granville, Ohio. He married
Susannah Rose, daughter of Lemuel and Achsah Hale Rose, also of Granville,
Massachusetts.  The Roses were part of the pioneer party to Ohio. Amos and
Susannah Carpenter had three sons: Timothy R., Truman W., Stephen Van
Rensselaer, all became wealthy businessmen who helped in the building of
Columbus, Ohio. Their one daughter, Louisa, married Rev. Sabin Hough. By a
second marriage to Joanna Ashton, Amos was the father of Ellen, who became a
school teacher.  Amos Carpenter died in 1858 and is buried in Columbus,
Ohio.
His parentage is my brick wall. I would appreciate any help.
Barbara Carpenter Martin
MORE:
A biographical poem written by Ellen's daughter told that Amos was the son
of a Thomas Carpenter and Elizabeth Van Rensselaer. I cannot prove that.
(All other events recorded in the poem, and it was an epic, seem correct).
MORE:
06 Sep 2000 From: Barbara Martin
Hello John,
Did I ever send you my Carpenter line?
We are only 5 generations long, because I can't connect my GG-grandfather,
Amos Carpenter, to a father.  Since we have no sixth generation bearing the
Carpenter surname, the name fades out with my generation.
There is no doubt in my mind that my Amos is from the Massachusetts
Carpenters. Although he was born in Albany Co., NY, (now Rensselaer Co.), he
moved at an early age to Massachusetts. When he was just 18, he left with
the Granille Co., MA pioneers who settled Granville, Licking Co., Ohio in
1802.
He married Susannah Rose, daughter of Lemuel and Achsah Hale Rose of
Granville, MA.  They and half the town also moved to Ohio. Susannah's
ancestors settled Massachusetts and were among the earliest Puritans.
Amos and Susannah were the parents of Timothy Rose, Truman, Stephen Van
Rensselaer and Ellen.
A biographical poem written by Ellen's daughter told that Amos was the son
of a Thomas Carpenter and Elizabeth Van Rensselaer. I cannot prove that.
(All other events recorded in the poem, and it was an epic, seem correct).
Let me know if I haven't sent what I have, and if you can use orphan lines,
and I will send it my gedcom.

Subject: Re: Amos Carpenter
OK, John, you didn't bite regarding my hint in the following sentence, so I'm going to bore you anyway.
This is what I offered:
"I had told you that in light of not being able to find any connection to Kevin's line in Granville,
Massachusetts, I was remaining skeptical. However, I have found a remote connection that could have
a remote explanation and I am now working on it. If you are curious, I will explain it to you."
So, curious or not, here goes:
My Amos Carpenter took as his first wife, Susannah Rose, the daughter of Lemuel and Achsah Hale
Rose, and the granddaughter of Justus and Deborah Barlow Rose. All of them lived in Granville,
Massachusetts.
Amos with the Lemuel Rose family were part of the party that migrated to Ohio and founded Granville,
Ohio in 1805. Amos even travelled in the same wagon with the Rose family. Later, he and Susannah
married in Ohio in1810.
Back to the past in Massachusetts, Justus Rose (Susannah's grandfather) died in 1781. Then, in 1788,
her grandmother Deborah Barlow Rose remarried Aaron Spelman. NOW, the fun begins!
Aaron's brother (among several) was Daniel Spelman. At Providence, Massachusetss in 1780, Daniel
married Mary Carpenter, who is #376 in the Carpenter Cousins! Further research reveals that Mary was
a descendant of the same Carpenters that our and Kevin's DNA links to. Mary's line follows: Jacob,
Silas, Silas, William of Providence.
For some of their marriage, the Spelmans lived in Granville, MA where most of the family had settled.
Later, they moved back to Providence but his body was returned to Granville for burial. This is the
possible link between my Amos and Kevin's same Carpenters.
Briefly, Amos Carpenter was very close to the Rose family before he married Susannah. Her step-great aunt
was Mary Carpenter Spelman.
My question: Could Mary have been related to the father of Amos?

Simple answer:
Amos Carpenter-34415 (who married Susannah Rose) and Mary Carpenter-145238 (who married
Daniel Spelman) are 1st cousins 2 times removed. Their common ancestors are Silas Carpenter Jr.-
9468 and Sarah Hannah Arnold-13658.
