1180. Joseph Carpenter

E-MAIL: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 From: "Marcia Buffett"
To: "John R. Carpenter"
CC: "Ken Warkentine"
Dear John and Ken:
Do either of you have anything on a Joseph C. Carpenter of Northville? He
had a daughter Libbie who was married on March 31, 1880 to Harmon Fisher a
barber in Northville.
Thanks, Marcia
NOTE: This Joseph had a sister named Rebecca whose first husband died in
Northville.  Was the Joseph C. above a descendant of this Joseph?

NOTE:
If the age tick mark is off by one column upward (I.E. 30 to 39) then this would fit this Joseph b. Dec 1790.
Next door is Daniel Carpenter with age 40 to 49 or b. abt 1791 to 1800. If the same thing happened (tick mark off by one cat plus) then he would be age 50 to 59 or b. abt 1781 to 1789 which mismatches the father reported b. of Feb 1764.
The Daniel mentioned could also be a brother or other relative. But, Joseph reportedly had no brother Daniel ...
Farther down the page is Elijah Carpenter with the age column of 60 to 69 or b. abt 1871 to 1880.
Sadly, I do not have a Carpenter family matching the information above.  SEE NEXT!

Correct area but age is off by about 10 years - image has the tick mark in the column as indicated. IF one tick mark younger then this would match up.
Two and three down on the census page is:
Thomas Carpenter & Stephen Carpenter with ages in th 50 to 59 year range or b. abt 1880 to 1890. unknown or non-matching for siblings.

CENSUS: 1850 US Census - nothing close found - is he deceased?

DEATH:
Claimed as 15 Dec 1851 in Madison County, NY - but no proof.  Need more data.

1181. Amos Carpenter

Amos and his wife were married in 1804 and later migrated to Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in what is now Scott Township. The 1810 United States Census of Abington Township, Luzerne County, lists Amos as head of Household with 3 Males under age 10, 1 Male between 19 and 45 years and one Female.

In 1810 Amos and Cynthia moved to North Abington, Pennsylvania, settling in an area that would later come to be known as Carpentertown.

They were members of the Abington Baptist Church. No trace has been found of Amos's acquisition of property in Abington where the brothers originally settled, but in 1821 Amos and Cynthia Carpenter deeded land in that vicinity to Nathan Bailey. At that time they probably removed to Abington Center (the present Waverly), where they lived until they moved to Loomis Lake.

Amos sold his land in Abington on December 14, 1821 to Nathan Bailey, brother of George Anson Bailey founder of Bailey Hollow (now Dalton). The deed was recorded with the Luzerne County Recorder on November 3, 1823 in Book 22, page 509. The delay in recording was most probably caused by the death of Nathen's father in June of 1821 and Nathan had to settle the estate in Rhode Island before bringing his mother to Pennsylvania.

In 1827 Amos was a member of the Six Principle Baptist Church in Abington Center.

He and his family later moved to Abington Center in Lenox Township where they were  living in Household Number 1306 of Susquehanna County during the 1850 United States Census. This area was to become the  town of Waverly around 1856. Many of Amos's family lived in a close proximity to him,  as did in-laws such as the Bailey and Westcot families. His son's Hiram and Amous lived in households 1337 and Household 1344, respectively.  About 1850 they moved to a farm near Loomis Lake in Lenox Township near Hopbottom, now the town of Foster in Susquehanna County, and died there. Amos and Cynthia were members of the Abington Baptist Church.

1184. Wheaton Carpenter

According to family tradition, Wheaton left Rhode Island with his brothers, Amos and Joseph in 1815. However, the 1810 Federal Census record places his brother Amos in Abington Township, Pennsylvania. It is believed that Amos went to Abington Township first before 1810, was followed by his brother Henry and later in 1815 Joseph and Wheaton traveled to the area with Otis Colvin.
Weaton did not settle in Abington as all traces of him were lost by the researcher until his descendants were located in Genesee County, New York. When his father died he was willed his fathers "Wearing Apparel".

Wheaton Carpenter was born in Scatuate, R. I., in 1788. At mature age he went to Scranton, Pa., then a wilderness and resided a few years, and married there Nancy Dickerson. In 1808 he, in company with Elisha Miller, came to Byron on foot, with knapsacks on their backs, in which they carried their provisions for the long and tiresome journey. Mr. Carpenter located a farm of 100 acres about one-half mile southwest of Byron Center. He then returned to Scranton, and two years later came with his wife and two infant daughters to the wilderness of Byron. In the meantime his claim was forfeited, and he procured another of 100 acres, 80 rods west of a log tavern Pept by Ben Hall, on Black Creek, where he resided until the ensuing spring (1811), when a freshet swept away his pig, fowls, and all movable property, and left only his cow and horse. Thus warned off he never returned, and never again owned real estate in Byron. He participated in the War of 1812, and went with the militia to Buffalo when they were called out He was a miller and resided in "Sodom," a location in Byron, and in thecold season of 1816 found his increased family destitute. On a Monday morning he wended his way to where A. W. Graves's flouring-mill is now located, and where was one of the most primitive grist-mills, con structed of logs and without an iron cog wheel in it; in fact nothing but wooden trundle-heads to drive the stones, which were made of a rock from an adjacent field. He turned the bolt with one hand and fed it with the other. This mill was built by one Williams and was the first in town. He engaged to run this complicated machine for half the toll, and at once went to work, remaining until Saturday, when he returned to his family with meal, who all this time knew nothing of his whereabouts. He found his wife roasting a few beans for her children's supper, the last edible morsel in the house. On Monday he removed his family to the vicinity of the mill, and fortunately placed them beyond want the remainder of their lives. He continued a miller for 40 years, in different parts of Genesee County, and died in Byron, at the house of his daughter, Mrs. Nancy Gaines, in the fall of 1876, aged 88 years. His. son, M. D. L. Carpenter, born in 1827, resides one fourth of a mile from North Byron.

NOTE:  Per Jack S.
Joseph and his family traveled with the Otis Colvin family " with a single span of horses" from Rhode Island to Abington Township in 1815. On arrival Joseph took title to the land that Henry Carpenter obtained on Tunkhannock Creek from Westcott Stone in what is now know as Scott Township.    The Carpenter Family Cemetery is located on their land, adjacent to the present  Intersection of State Routes 524 and 347 in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.

The Carpenter Cemetery contains mostly members of the Carpenter family that descended from William Carpenter of Providence Rhode Island. There is an early record of this cemetery made by Fred Sherwood,  when he did a survey of cemeteries in Northeast Pennsylvania. In this record (as published by the Stone family),  he  wrote "Mostly Carpenter surname on gravestones. I will call this the Carpenter Cemetery. There are Simrell, Newton, Emerson, Ellis, Vail , Fellows and other gravestones here. There are several black families buried here including the Fogg and Allen Families." He only recorded the following individuals;

1. Henson Allen died 20 Apr 1852 aged 45y 28d.
2. Pardon Allen from New London, Settled Here 1811, husband ; Betsey A. Allen died Apr 27, 1848 77y 1m 10d, wife; Henson Allen died 20     Apr 1852 aged 45y 28d. (Picture 20)

4. Davis Colvin d.11 Oct 1870 aged 61y 7m 4d husband; Sabra Colvin 1 Nov 1808 -1 Mar 1891 wife Emma Luzina Colvin, daughter
   Harriet, wife of Asa Giles, died in 1845 aged over 28 years

Mrs Lambert noted that these were all the stones she copied down and that there are still others, but many were difficult to read due to
weathering. She also stated that "While I was their a young man stopped by to say that he and some of his friends took the initiative to clean up the cemetery this past year, they cleared out a lot of the overgrowth, his name was Mike Stabinski and his friends were Jim Wilk and Kyle Christian. Mr. Christian and Mr. Wilk live directly behind the cemetery in a housing development and Mr. Stabinski said he believed that land that the housing is on may have been owned by the Carpenter family originally.

The Carpenter Cemetery contains mostly members of the Carpenter family
that descended from William Carpenter of Providence Rhode Island. It is
believed that the Carpenters owned much of this land in Scott Township
and possibly acreage in Abington Township also. The William Carpenter
buried in Knight Cemetery are 3ed cousin of  Joseph Carpenter (Number 8
in this list).   Jack A Schoedinger.

Lydia Carpenter Rogers
Birth:  1806
Granville
Washington County
New York, USA
Death:  1890
Coos County
Oregon, USA
Lydia Carpenter was born on March 31, 1806, Granville, Washington Co., NY, to Amos Carpenter, (b. 1762), and Amos' second wife, Deborah Dillingham, (b. 1775, Easton, New York), married June 27, 1805.

Lydia's half siblings:
* Stephan, (b. 11-27-1810, Granville, Washington, NY).
* Cynthia, (b. 8-22-1811, Granville, Washington, NY).
* Amy, (b, 12-4-1814, Granville, Washington, NY).

Lydia was married to Joseph Rogers, (b. March 21, 1801, Danby, Rutland County, Vermont), married 17 Jan 1827 (or 1826), in Granville, Washington. Joseph 's parents were Aaron Rogers, (b. 1776- d. 1866), and Dinah Folger Rogers (b. 1-5-1782 Easton, NY- d. 16 January 1860 at Worcester, Massachusetts). Aaron and Dinah were married on 22 March 1798. The couple settled on a farm in Danby, later owned by an AA Mathewson.

Lydia and Joseph's children:
* Amos Carpenter Rogers (1828 - 1920) was married to Mary E. Noble Rogers (1842 - 1903). Amos and Mary lived the later part of their lives in Berkeley, CA.
* Anson Rogers, (b. 1829).
* Cyntha Rogers, (b. 1833).
* Stephen Rogers, (b. 1835).
* Lydia Ann Rogers, (b. 1837).
* George Rogers, (b. 1839).
* Joseph Rogers, (b. 1842).
* Marion Adelia Rogers, (b. 1846,-d. 1920), married to Jasper Anson Yoakam, (b. 1848,- d. 1924).

In the 1850 Census Joseph and Lydia were listed as living in Danby, Rutland, Vermont with their family:
Joseph Rogers, M 48y
Lydia Rogers, F 43y
Amos C Rogers, M 22y
Anson Rogers, M 21y
Cyntha Rogers, F 17y
Stephen Rogers, M 15y
Lydia Rogers F, 13y
George Rogers M, 11y
Joseph Rogers M, 8y
Marion Rogers F, 4y

Joseph and Lydia's family migrated west to Oregon in several movements between 1850 and 1880. At almost 50 years old, Joseph had been kicked in the head by a horse and was severely handicapped both mentally and physically, (sometimes described as "insane" during this period). After the accident, he was unable to work. He remained first on his own farm in Danby with his younger children, including his young daughter, Marion. When his wife journeyed to California seeking a means of support for the family, Joseph moved-in with his son, Stephen Carpenter Rogers, in Glenn Falls, NY. Later he moved again, to Granville, NY.

The first of Lydia and Joseph's children to move west was their eldest son, Amos C. Rogers. "In 1849 Amos C. 'caught the gold fever' and joined a group in Boston, Massachusetts who called themselves the Bunker Hill Mining and Trading Association. For $300 each, Amos C. and eight other young men from a nearby town, including his cousin Amos E. Rogers, joined the association numbering 120 men. The association bought the ship Regidas, (Regulus), and left Boston on March 5, 1849. They sailed around Cape Horn and landed in San Francisco on September 29, 1849. In the spring of 1850 Amos C. headed for the gold country and panned for gold on the American, Feather, and Yuba Rivers.

In 1851 Amos C. sent for his mother, Lydia, (Carpenter) Rogers . At age forty-six she came to booming San Francisco by herself and went to work for a banker and his wife. No record has been found to indicate how Lydia came to San Francisco but it must have been by ship. Lydia sent money home to help support her husband, Joseph Rogers , and their younger children. By 1860 Joseph was sufficiently recovered to move to the Coos Bay area where he rejoined his wife, Lydia. When Joseph and Lydia were reunited in Coos County, they moved to Anson Rogers' farm where they lived until they died."

Above quote from: Using the text of e-book Craddock, Kinder, Rogers, and Sheldon families by Sheldon Forbes Craddock active link like: read the ebook Craddock, Kinder, Rogers, and Sheldon families, is obligatory.

When Lydia arrived in San Francisco in 1851 she sent a letter to her son, Amos C. Rogers, in the gold country and he returned to the city where he established a house raising and moving business. In 1854 the second son, Anson Rogers, came to San Francisco and joined his brother, Amos C. 8 , in the business. The records show that Anson came west by ship having walked across the Isthmus of Panama. The railroad across the isthmus was not completed until 1855.

In 1855 Amos Carpenter Rogers met his cousin, Amos Emerson Rogers, in San Francisco again. Amos Emerson had gone to Coos County, Oregon where he met and married a girl from Empire.

Upon hearing of the opportunities in the Coos Bay area Lydia and her two sons, Anson and Amos C , decided that Amos C. should go there to explore the possibilities. Amos C. arrived in Empire by ship on June 15, 1855 with a large supply of merchandise. He promptly opened a store (trading post) and then expanded into a saloon and ten pin(bowling) alley. He also purchased a farm at the fork of the Coos River. Shortly thereafter his mother, Lydia, and his brother, Anson, moved from San Francisco to the farm. About 1 869 Amos C. sold his store and saloon in Empire and moved to the farm. In 1876 he sold the farm and he and his wife, Elizabeth, (Noble), moved to Berkeley, California. She died in 1903 and he died in 1920.

In 1858 Anson had purchased a 320-acre farm on the south fork of the Coos River. In 1869 he returned to Granville, New York where he married Elizabeth Dillingham. Anson was in the stock raising and dairy businesses and the farm had taken on a semblance of prosperity and comfort. Ultimately, he made it into one of the finest farms
in Coos County. Anson became a prominent citizen and the bridge across the Coos River was named for him. Anson and his wife had four children, Dillingham , Elizabeth , Alice
and Anson Otis Rogers.

There are many families with the surname Rogers in the Coos Bay area but Otis Dillingham Rogers, son of Anson Otis Rogers and grandson of Anson Rogers, is the
only descendant of Joseph Rogers with the surname Rogers now living there.

Of the whole Joseph Rogers family, those who came west were Joseph and his wife, Lydia, (Carpenter), Rogers , and five of their eight children: Amos C., Anson, Stephen Carpenter, Maria Dinah, and Marion. No record has been found to indicate that the other three children, Cynthia, Lydia, and Joseph, came west. In the 1880 census Joseph's family was listed as living in Coos River, OR. They were:
Joseph Rodgers, M 74,
Lydia Rodgers F 74.
Anson R. Rodgers, M 51,
Lydia E. Rodgers, F 35,
Elizabeth Rodgers F 7,
Alice Rodgers, F 4,
Anson O. Rodgers, M 3M,

Their household also included four non-related persons. Joseph's birth date seems to be incorrect on the census.
Lydia died 1890
Joseph died in 1891.
Both are buried at Coos River Cemetery.

In 1855 Amos C. 8 Rogers met his cousin, Amos E. Rogers, in San Francisco again. Amos E. had gone to Coos County, Oregon where he met and married a girl from Empire.
In 1876 he sold the farm and he and his wife, Elizabeth, moved to Berkeley, California. She died in 1903 and he died in 1920.

In 1858 Anson 8 had purchased a 320-acre farm on the south fork of the Coos River.
