1202. Hopkins Carpenter Sr.

E-MAIL:  Re: Hopkins Carpenter   Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000
From:  Terry Lee Carpenter   diluvius@flash.net
To:      John Carpenter
John,
This is some data from the past, which I worked on in 1983-1984 with
Louise Carpenter Licklider [LCL], a descendant of this line through
Hopkins Carpenter.  Just recently, I contacted a descendant of the
Charles Carpenter branch who was researching his line, and was able to
hook him up with this research.  I have not been able to contact
Louise.  Her book is in the Library of Congress so I was able to consult
it to make sure my notes were correct.  I believe Louise may not be
active in research anymore.  She would be in her 80s now.  Her husband
died in 1990.  He was the famous computer scientist J. C. R. Licklider
who was one of the people who really did invent the Internet.  This is
the "bare bones" of the line and if the descendant through Charles has
any luck he may be able to add to it.

(Arnold) Carpenter < Silas/2 (DHC #VIII) and Sarah (Arnold) Carpenter <
William/1 (DHC #I) and Elizabeth (Arnold) Carpenter of Providence RI
[DHC].  Hopkins Carpenter married on 6 Dec 1795 at Providence RI to
Mehitabel "Hettabel" Pearce [LCL].  He was enumerated in Providence RI

       6d. Marshall N. Carpenter, born c1849-1850.
       6e. Alice B. Carpenter, born c1853.
This is a very atypical migration pattern for a New England line, and a
good example of what is possible when dealing with adventurous
individuals descended from that line.
Best regards, Terry Lee Carpenter.

Iowa Records show Jesse moved west to Parke Co., Indiana. I have some gaps in records here but the United States Government deeded some land to John Carpenter in Iowa in 1831and to Jesse oin the same quarter section in 1836. The handwritten Abstract shows several property swaps involving family members.  It shows that John was deceased in 1867 and Alsa Farr being the widow of John Carpenter.  It shows that Jessee sold his land to Elisa Carpenter in 1841.    To skip ahead;  Elhanan moved to Dawes Co. Nebraska in 1885.

"Do you have information on Knight Carpenter's son Jesse?  I have a Jesse
Knight Carpenter born abt 1797 (based on one census) in VT.  He moved to
Parke Co., IN, in the 1830's along with a William Carpenter whose age and
proximity make him appear to be Jesse's brother."
To Warren and others........
My Carpenter file does not have any further information on
Jesse Carpenter, son of Knight Carpenter.  Wes Skinner did
much of the research on our family.  Here is the address to
look at his work:  http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?

In some notes I have from Wes it says that it appeared that Knight
Carpenter moved to Chester Vermont in the 1780's. I'm sorry that
I have no more information on these two brothers - William and
Jesse.  I would like to have what information you have if you
think these are our boys.  Maybe someone else on this list can
help us out here.   Penny
