William R. Carpenter
NOTE: #93-3 in the T. Carpenter book. WILLIAM R. CARPENTER of Alden, had at least
five children (listed in his will) by his first wife (name unknown) who died
previous to the will dated 1866. His second wife, HARRIET is mentioned in the
same will (document # 3457 at the Buffalo, N.Y. courthouse). Per 1976 book.
Children are listed with Harriet in that record and are: Joseph Carpenter (B.
no birth dates given), William, Caroline, Mary, & John B. Carpenter.
NOTE: First spouse and children deceased prior to 1866 are not mentioned.
The following has been disproved by Y-DNA research. The above is a Providence Carpenter line represented by Group 2 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project. The info below has Y-DNA from the Rehoboth Carpenter line in Group 3.

This William's first wife is believed to be Mary Taylor (b. 1799) with children
Griffin Carpenter (b. 1821 with descendants), William (b. nbd given), John,
Sam, Urah, Mary Randal, Ruth Ryolds, Ann Ward, Alvira Root, and Charlot. The
information came from Donald W. Carpenter of Ontario, Canada who received this
information from a friend on the internet (Tom Gunn in Texas). "William
Carpenter and Mary Taylor had 10 children in Niagara (,Ontario, Canada).
William was born somewhere in NY in 1792 and moved to Niagara county in 1817."

NOTE:
#88-3 in the T. Carpenter book. Probably buried near his father's grave, many
unmarked plots holding Carpenters. It is possible that Jeremiah had a son
named Jeremiah. If so it must have been from a previous marriage. Some
of the land transactions seem to indicate this.
JEREMIAH made numerous real estate deals in the Alden-Marilla-Wales area of
Erie County, N.Y. where he was among the earliest settlers:
1. Oct. 27, 1825, he and brother GEORGE purchased 100 acres for $500.00 (Lot
125, Twp. 10, 5th range). In 1827, they purchased a tract on Four Rod Road,
east of Marilla, and Jeremiah started to erect a log home.
2. June 29, 1832 brother GEORGE and his wife ANNA conveyed 100 acres to
JEREMIAH for $600.00 in the Buffal Run area (Lot 138, Twp. 10, 5th Range).
3. May 6, 1835 JEREMIAH and wife HEPSIBETH conveyed 95 acre for $1700.00 in
Alden to a MILO CLARK.
4. In 1838 JEREMIAH and brother JOSEPH built a second sawmill. (where is #1?)
5. IN 1840, he settled in Marilla Village.
6. In 1838 JEREMIAH and brother JOSEPH conveyed a parcel at Wales for $1200.00.
7. JEREMIAH made two conveyences to brother NILES for $1.00 (one dollar) each,
the first in 1840 and the second in 1849.
8. In 1850, he conveyed land to a EDWIN CARPENTER. Possibly a son.
9. In 1851, he conveyed land to a JOHN C. CARPENTER and a GEORGE CARPENTER.
These were possibly his sons. Maybe Nephews?
10. May 21, 1851 he conveyed to Methodist Espiscopal Church of Marilla trustees
for $500.00 a parcel of 5 chains and 25 links upon which a church was to be
erected.
JEREMIAH was elected Town Sealer at the first Town Meeting held in home of his
brother NILES March 7, 1854. The conveyances he made to the people in number 8
and 9 above may have been to his sons, but there is no way, at this date
(1976), of so identifying them. LISTED as sons 1992 pending more info.

Number 96-3 in the Timothy Carpenter book.
GEORGE and his brother JEREMIAH purchased from BENJAMIN WOOSLEY POPE of New
York City for $500.00 a 100-acre tract in Lot 125, Twp. 10, 5th Range on Oct.
27, 1825; this sale was recorded Sept. 26, 1832. GEORGE had 70 acres of this
tract and began construction of a log cabin. In 1827, the two brothers
purchased another tract on the Four Rod Road, east of the site of Marilla, and
JEREMIAH began raising a log cabin. On June 9, 1832, George and his wife ANNE
conveyed to brother JEREMIAH of the ALden area, 100 acres for $600.00 in the
undivided half of Buffalo Run, Lot 138, Twp. 10, 5th Range, as recorded Sept.
26, 1832. In 1842, GEORGE built a house; the same year he devised a piece of
land for the Evergreen Cemetery in Marilla. His son, GLEASON, was the first
offical interment in this new section. GEORGE'S father had been interred in a
private burial site on this ground prior to its becoming a cemetery.
GEORGE'S will, dated May 26, 1882, named sons LEWIS and JOHN executors, but son
LEWIS petitioned and was granted the post of estate administrator. The
following were mentioned in the will: Spouse, MEHITABEL; sons LEWIS and JOHN
of Marilla; son GEORGE of Watertown, State of Dakota; son CHARLES of Dakota;
son SQUIRE of Cresco, IA, and daughter LYDIA of Marilla. All were over age
21. ALSO MENTIONED granddaughter OSCEOLA ADAM of Marilla and grandsons FRANK
S. and CHARLES L. gravestones were in good condition in 1974; There is a name
only on MEHITABEL'S stone.

mistaken for one another.

of Sophia Carpenter Sutton. Here is his original correspondence with me, as
well as excerpts from two other notes:

Dear Stefani,
I found your 2/14/99 (valentines Day) query this AM as I was subscribing to
the list. I have the answer on the parentage of the three Suttons who married
DeGarmo's in Dutchess County, NY. The reply is a little long to be included
in the query reply section, so I am contacting you directly.
I am doing research on the Ring family originating in Dutchess County ca
1731-5. Some cousins of mine in Poughkeepsie (Ring's) have a significant
amount of archival information. Seeing your query sparked a memory in me
about the name Sutton, as it is in my family as well. One of the archives I
mentioned is a small (actually, two) writing booklet, plain paper, about 3 x
6 inches, folded like a book, and about 16 pages. On these are written the
lineage and children of Harmon Stoutenburgh, which I will transcribe below. I
have no other proof of the data you seek, but will add in parentheses
additional comments I have learned.
The DeGarmo's were early land owners in the Netherwood section od Pleasant
Valley, which was part of Clinton prior to 1821. One is mentioned in an 1821
deed as the second prior owner of the land.

me this, she did not know of any Carpenter family connection, and didn't know
the significance of the name. She also said that her uncle Henry's wife did
not like his middle name, and on Henry's obit, she changed it to Charles. I
have not seen the obit.]

We have 2 Benjamin Carpenters born in Westchester county, NY.
The other one was born 14 Nov 1775 in Sommers. He died in Dec 1835. Son of Benjamin & Jane Edmunds.
He is RIN 24164 in the CE CD 2001.
This one on 14 Oct 1775 in West Farms. He died 17 Dec 1838. Son of Henry & Phebe.
See notes below that show it was the Benjamin, son of Henry who married Martha Weeks.

I double checked the death date in the 1901 book and it does say 17 Dec 1835. My guess is that we may have found a typo!

Sarah Carpenter b. 31 jan. 1867 and her siblings brother Stephen and
sisters mary Edith Evelyn. Their parents Robert Halleck Carpenter b. 1
July 1827 m. May 11 1853 nyc to Amy Thorne Griffen Dau. of Thomas T.
Griffen and Mary Miller Amy b. Feb.18 1829. Robert 's parents are listed
as Benjamin and Martha. He died 17, 12m, 1838 aged 63 1mo. 3d (Born Nov.
14, 1775?) Martha D.19 of 9mo. 1827 aged 46 4mo. 11d.(born may 8 1781?)A
slip of paper in it lists a blacksmith bill of 17.06$ and on the
reverse what appear to be death dates Martha in 1821 aged 46 James
1859aged 53 Joseph aged 36 in 1859 and Benjamin age 63 1838. Do any of
these appear in your data base? They were all Quakers for many
generations. The Sarah Carpenter listed 1st Married Henry Warrington
Gillingham at Meeting in NYC in 1897.These Quakers lived in Westchester
county and the Griffens in Orange and may have started out on Long Is
before settling in 9 partners . If any of this is of interest to add to
your data base I can send details. If you can connect them I would love

Dear John, Yes I am still at this address. My Robert Halleck Carpenter was not the son of Wright Carpenter but the child of Benjamin Carpenter and Martha Weeks. From the dates I have for them I was able to reconstruct the line thru various Quaker records. The only online record had Robert's birthdate off by 20 years as someone must have thought it impossible for Martha to have Henry and then no children for all those years and suddenly have Robert.I had always heard Robert had a much older brother who could not take over his care when his mother died shortly after his birth. His father died when he was young leaving the orphaned Robert to be brought up by aunts in Westchester Co. which his family had helped settle.
I was also told that the family was descended from the Kips of new Amsterdam. Martha Weeks grandmother was a Kip. Wright Carpenter appears to be a close cousin of my line whose child has the same name as my ancestor. The Carpenters seem to like Benjamin and Robert and Sarah as names and repeat them often!
Thanks for keeping me posted on the Carpenter clan. Would you like a copy of what I have so far? Also, is La Mesa by San Diego? I was down there yesterday and thought I saw a road sign for La Mesa but am not really familiar with the area as I grew up here on the central coast in Santa Barbara County. My grandmother told me she had Carpenter cousins here in California as her aunt who married a Burr and moved to San Jose at the turn of the century. (Can one use that phrase now that the century has turned again?)Our family lost track of that San Jose bunch after they moved from New York. Thanks for all the info.

Some probate is dated 25 Sep 1862 where the widow accepts the will given! Yes, 1862 is very clear. And the will is repeated into probate. More probate on 3 Oct 1862. apparently the executors did something about selling land that the family was not happy about. The reason is to settle debts but tmembers of the family want the land! Family is listed as defendants and the sole surving executor is William F. Smith. And that Robert Carpenter deceased departed this life about the 5th day of August 1861.
Probate continues ... 8 Mar 1865 to include a apprasial of premises and land. Said land to be sold.
This land was put up for sale on 10 May 1865 by court ordered auction by W. T. Smith, executor.
The land was sold to James Haskill for $1749.02 being the highest and best bid. Probate shows diagrams of lots. Costs of probate outlined by executor to date. Then 4 Apr 1867 is an accounting of bills paid and such, this including acceptances by heirs from 1866 to 1867. And apparent completion of the Probate.

over. I'm interested in the Elizabeth Carpenter married to John Thorn - but
the ages and marriage date don't match what I have. I will copy some of my
notes on this email for you to look over. You may want to contact Paul
Truesdell if you haven't already. He couldn't remember where he got the
info I have on John & Ann Carpenter Thorn - I think the birthplace info is
from the 1855 New York State census. Paul lives in Okinawa.

Dawn Carpenter suggested that I contact you. I am researching Louis (some sources spell it Lewis) Carpenter, born December 14, 1829, possibly in New York State.
I am the Law Librarian at the Douglas County Law Library, now being formed in Lawrence, Kansas. I am researching Louis Carpenter because there is a proposal to have a memorial to him in the Law Library. We need to have as much information as possible about him to determine if such a memorial would be appropriate. I have found no information about him prior to 1860 except for his birth date, recorded on his headstone (an image of which is located on the Find a Grave web site at: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=10534), and that he was from New York. He is recorded in the Kansas Territorial Census of 1860 as living in Lawrence but when he actually came to Kansas is unknown. He was married in Lawrence to Mary E. Barber of Emporia, Kansas, on October 10, 1862 but had no children. He was murdered at the hands of Confederate guerrillas led by William Clarke Quantrill in a raid on Lawrence on August 21, 1863. He was an attorney, had been probate judge, had run unsuccessfully for Attorney General of Kansas and, at the time of his death, was Recorder for the Kansas Supreme Court.
While Carpenter was probate judge in Douglas County, he wrote a Mrs. F. Stowe of Livingston County, N.Y. on April 11, 1861, concerning the estate of her husband. Other material in the letter suggests that Judge Carpenter may have had more than a professional relationship with her, being either a friend or relative of hers. Other than this, I have no clue as to where in New York he may have come from, whether he was actually born in New York, or any family connections he may have had.
