CENSUS: 1850 Census of Bedford Township, Meigs county, Ohio (# 526526).
Henry married Hannah Gilkey per Vol. 1/2, page 180.

1993. Rosina Carpenter

See page 48 of the Mowrey 1997 book.
Page 49 conflicts with page 48 - See the excerpt below from page 49:
The author does not concur with many reputable Carpenter family historians
on the make-up of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Hamm) Carpenter's dozen children.
Many list a Rosina (RESINA) Carpenter, who married John Gilpin as one of their older
daughters. It is far more likely that this Rosina Carpenter is part of the
Nicholas and Christopher Carpenter (nee, Zimmerman) lineage.
See also "A Carpenter Genealogy" by Lyle Sharp and Frances Stoner, 1996 which
documents the Zimmerman-Carpenter Family of VA and the South.

SEE: Pioneer Women of Liverpool (OH)  which lists her and her husband.
She was cheated by a friend and lost what they had and later moved.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ridge,_West_Virginia
Ridge is an unincorporated community hamlet in Morgan County, West Virginia. It is located along Valley Road (U.S. Highway 522) at its intersection with Fish Hatchery Road (CR 38/10) near the Frederick County, Virginia line. Sleepy Creek and Timber Ridge lie to its east with Warm Springs Ridge lying to its west.

1996. Rebecca Carpenter

See page 48 of the Mowrey 1997 book.
Page 48: 4. Rebecca (17) Carpentrer was born on April 1, 1793, married Samuel
C. Miller circa 1816 and died October 31, 1875. Samuel was born 25 April 1796,
served in the War of 1812 and died 13 January 1874. Both are buried in the old
"Miller Cemetery" on Stover's Fork in Roane County, West Virginia. The story of
Samuel's having traded forty dollars and a hog for Rebecca's hand in marriage
was reaffirmed by a number of people, quite independently
of each other, in several of this writer's (Mowrey) recent forays (1997) into
Braxton and Webster Counties.

Rebecca, married Samuel Miller  (Bette Butcher Topp her descendants).
Have a great deal of info on Samuel Miller and family.
Rebecca Carpenter, b. 1 Apr. 1793 Braxton Co. Va., d. 31 Oct. 1875 Roane
Co. WV. Rebecca Carpenter's mother's maiden name was Mann, d/o John Mann,
Sr. & Francis Elizabeth Carpenter, d/o Joseph Coles Carpenter. Francis
was a aunt to Jeremiah Carpenter.

Data from Paul Mowrey's 1997 book.  Page 61-62:
Children of Rebecca (17) Carpenter, of Jeremiah (16), of Solomon (15)
1. Mary Judith "Polly" or "Judy" Miller was born circa 1815 and
married John S. (17) Carpenter, her uncle, 1834 or earlier. This may have been
a "common law" marriage (no record is found). She is often confused with her
aunt, Judith Carpenter, who was the second wife of Jesse Tanner. Family
tradition says that Elijah Carpenter, her son, had a full brother
named George. Research neither confirms or denies this. He had three half
siblings (possibly full brothers) including James, Madison and Henson
found but unnamed , of course, in the household of Thomas Carpenter (son
of Solomon) in the 1840 census for Braxton County,
Virginia. Elijah was already living with his "Uncle" Jesse Tanner in Roane
County at this time.
2. Elizabeth "Betsey" Miller was born about 1816, married Alexander
"Sandy" Board 1 May 1837 in Jackson County, Virginia and died
before 3 March 1842.
3. Joshua Miller was born around 1818, married 1st to Samantha Runnion
who was the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Staats) King Runnion; 2nd to
Lucy (Bolt) Hopkins, a widow, 19 August 1869 in Ohio and died there
(date unknown). This Joshua is often mistaken for his uncle, Joshua,
for whom one of the Miller's Runs in Roane County is named. The uncle was
the first Miller to settle in Roane County.
4. Basil Miller was born circa 1820, married Elizabeth Tanner,
daughter of William Tanner, 8 March 1847 and died after 1870 in Roane County.
5. Amos Miller was born around 1822, married 1st Susan Helmeck 31
October 1846 and 2nd Susan Brannon 1 September 1848 and died 7 July 1904.
6. Jeremiah Miller was born 26 April 1823, died 24 June 1896 and
married 1st Adaline Tolley 16 September 1841; 2nd Lydia Rollins 30 November 1864
& 3rd Minerva L. Blackwell 26 May 1870. Family stories say that Jeremiah was
married five times. If so, the names of his other wives and marriage dates
are undiscovered.
7. Nancy Miller was born circa 1825, married Richard Wine 24 November
1848 and died 12 July 1890.
8. John Miller was born circa 1826, never married and died after 1860.
9. Samuel Miller, Jr., so-called, (His grandfather was also a Samuel
Miller.) was born circa 1829 and was twice married; 1st Mary Ann Robey 14
February 1848 and 2nd Susannah, whose maiden name is not known, before 1860.
10. Thomas Miller was born 7 October 1830, died 31 October 1895 and
was twice married. He married first Drusilla Kirby after 1850 and second Emily
Phillips, date undiscovered. Drusilla Kirby died 1863 or 1864. Emily was born
circa 1845 and died in April of 1896.
11. Emaline Miller was born in 1832 and died in 1917. She married
Charles Wine 1 September 1848. The children of Emaline and Nancy Miller were
double first cousins (mothers were sisters and fathers were brothers).
12. Anderson "Purdy Anderson" Miller was born 28 March 1837 in Jackson
County, Virginia and married Mary McKnown 16 March 1857. The nickname of "Purdy
Anderson" was self ascribed.
The author has yet to encounter a Roane County family researcher who hasn't
found an error in William H. Bishop's History of Roane County, West Virginia
(Spencer, WV, 1927) although there has to be someone- somewhere! This book was
written by subscription only and is a useful resource, but not very reliable.
However, many family histories, such as the Millers, are based almost
entirely upon it and are perpetuations of his mistakes- enough said!

Samuel C. Miller Jr.

He served in the War of 1812.
The following children show up in one report but not others.  They may be
children of another marriage: Sarah J. MILLER,  Mary Judith "Polly" MILLER,
Amos MILLER,  Henderick MILLER, and Hezekiah MILLER.

1870 census say Samuel born Tenn.  Roane County History says Greene Co. Va.
pg. 608 Hardesty's says Greenbrier Co. Va. Samuel served in War of 1812.
Notes: In 1850 census-Jackson Co. (W)Va. -- Samuel (51) and Rebecca (57)
living next door to Richard and Nancy Wines.  In the Miller house #129
were also Elizabeth HALE (17), #130, Samuel & Sudna TANNER at #126.  At
#32 was Alexander BOONE (71) and Rebecca D. (28) with Rebecca A. (12).

Samuel Miller lived for a short time on Spring Creek near the Boggs&
Depies families. abt. 1830 he bought 1000 acres of forest near mouth of
the Stover Fork in Roane Co. W.Va.
A Samuel Miller was living in Jackson Co. Wv. in 1840 census at age of 77
yrs. as head of houshould. 1 June.  A Samuel Miller pensioner of Rev. War
lived in Brooke Co.WV. in 1841 age 85, (b. 1756) and living with Joseph
Miller. Also named in Ohio Co.
Samuel Miller, buried Wellington Cemetery, Roane Co. WV. age 77y.8m.19d.
13 Jan. 1874.  Rebecca, same cemetery, died age 82y.6m. on 31 Oct. 1875.

4105. Henderick Miller

A HEDRICK MILLER MARRIED MARTHA J. WALKER AUG. 1866 ROANE CO WV.
Hendrick was adopted by Richard W. Wine (b. 1827) and Nancy Miller (b.
1822).
Hedrick Hardman Miller was born circa 1840, married Martha (maiden name
unknown) and died about 1930. (Nancy Miller's first two sons were
illigitimate.)  This last per the Mowery book.

April 1866 Jemima Vandale. (born circa 1841, daughter of John and Zeriah
Vandale).  This last per the Mowrey book.

1997. John Samuel Carpenter

NAME:  Compare to John S. Carpenter-32629. Same spouse name.

Tami Knuutila  < t_knute2003@yahoo.com > submitted this descendancy line on 4 Nov 2003 via e-mail.

He was killed in 1835.  Is it possible there were two Johns in this family?
One died young?  Was there a Mary Miller and a Judith Miller who may have been
sisters?
!John, married Judith "Polly" or Mary MILLER, d/o Samuel & Rebecca
(CARPENTER) Miller, Rebecca, d/o Jeremiah & Elizabeth (Mann) Carpenter.
Judith born ca. Judith born ca.1830, married second to Jesse TANNER.
(Judith was a neice of John Carpenter.)
This Judith, or Mary Miller would have been nineteen years his junior,
She was listed as the  first marriage of Harper  Dist. Roane Co. WV. abt.
1814. As Polly Miller Carpenter, a widow and d/o Samuel. (By
Hardesty's Roane Co.  pg. 258)
Elijah Carpenter was born abt. 1828, so this could not be the son of John
S. & Mary "Polly" Miller.
Do not know if this is a son of John S. Carpenter or not.

An Amos Carpenter newspaper obituary. 19 May 1894. (Do not know who this
Amos Carpenter is)
Committed Suicide. On Monday the rumor reached here that Amos Carpenter,
a prominent citizen of Webster County, had committed suicide, but there
was no confirmation of it until the Intelligence of the 12th. inst., came
to hand which contained the folliwng:--Amos Carpenter, a prominent and
infuential farmer of the Webster county, who lives near Erbacon,
attempted suicide last night at 10 o,clock about one mile and a half from
his home by shooting himself with a 32-calibre revolver. The ball took
effect in the right breast. Dr. Hyer pronounced it fatal. Everyone that
has visted Webster Springs no doubt remembers Mr. Carpenter, as his home
has always been a resting place on this long journey. He is resting
easier to-night, but the doctor has not hopes of his recovery. Domestic
troubles seems to have been the cause of the act.

2003. John S. Carpenter

NAME:
Middle name possbly Stanley.
Compare to John Samuel Carpenter-28453. Same spouse name.

See page 48 of the Mowrey 1997 book.
Per page 48: 10. John S. (17) was born about 1808, married? 1st Mary Judith
Miller circa 1834- 2nd Sidney or Sudance Cowger 2 June 1849 and died after 1880
in Webster County, West Virginia.
Mary Judith Miller was a daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (Carpenter) Miller and
John's niece.   (NOTE!!!)  She is often confused with Mary Carpenter,
daughter of Jesse, and Judith Carpenter, daughter of Jeremiah, who were the
first two wives of Jesse Tanner, because of their commonality in Christian and
nicknames and misinformation in John A. House's never-the-less valuable book,
Pioneers of Roane County, West Virginia, published at Spencer in 1906.

From notes on the other John S. in the Family ...
He was killed in 1835.  Is it possible there were two Johns in this family?
One died young?  Was there a Mary Miller and a Judith Miller who may have been
sisters?
John, married Judith "Polly" or Mary MILLER, d/o Samuel & Rebecca

Subject: Re: 2a. Group administrator and FTDNA policies on non-Y test kits in Y p
It might take me some time to go through this. I probably won't get to it until after April 15. I still have to do my taxes and as of Sunday am working with the police investigating a break in at my grandmother's house Zadia Dale Price Greathouse. She passed in 2010. I was planning to remodel her house just to have a place to stay in Richwood when want to visit there, but nope... the thieves and druggees aren't going to let us keep anything decent there. It has been broken into three times. It sets on the Greathouse homestead land settled there in 1906 when Ervin M. Greathouse, son of Isaac B. & Sarah Elizabeth Tanner Greathouse moved his family there to run his own lumber tram operation hauling logs to Cherry River Boom & Lumber Company. At first glance at Judith "Polly" Carpenter... I think Jesse Tanner's first wife Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Carpenter nickname may have been attached to Judith by some researchers who didn't catch that Jesse Tanner married Mary Elizabeth "Polly" about 1820. She appears to have died about the time her son William Tanner was born about 1836. She has been reported as daughter of Jesse & Sarah Jane Riffe Carpenter. Jesse next married Judith Carpenter daughter of Jeremiah & Elizabeth Hamm Carpenter about 1827. Their first child appears to have been Thomas Tanner if I recall. I have not seen any records in which Judith was named Polly. I can give you Judith's death record rather quickly, in which Jesse Tanner related her parents as J. [Jeremiah] and Elizabeth [Hamm] Carpenter. Her death register entry is on line 41. -- Rick Greathouse rick@greathouse.us mailto:rick@greathouse.us>

2004. Judith "Polly" Carpenter

NAME: Judith was known as Polly, but her name is often spellt as Judy or Judah
instead of Judith.    See page 48 of the Mowrey 1997 book:
Per page 48: 11. Judith (17) Carpenter was born around 1809, married Jesse
"Ike" Tanner circa 1837 and died 10 October 1859 (Jesse reported her death in
Roane County.  Other records have her death in Braxton county, VA.
She was fifty years old and the daughter of J. and Elizabeth (Hamm) Carpenter
of Braxton (page 49) County. She and Jesse's first wife, Mary Carpenter
(daughter of Jesse and Sarah Jane Riffe Carpenter) are probably buried in the
old Tanner Cemetery on Craig Ridge.

BY TERRY LEE CARPENTER AND PAUL THOMAS MOWREY.
PRO BONO PUBLICO - PRIVATELY PUBLISHED, DOVER, OHIO, 1997.
BY PAUL THOMAS MOWREY.
PAGE 52: 2. Jesse "Ike" Tanner was born circa 1795, married 1st Mary "Polly"
Carpenter 14 August 1820 in Mason County (Mary was a daughter of Jesse and
Sarah Jane Riffe Carpenter) and 2nd Judith Carpenter (Judy was a daughter of
Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hamm Carpenter) circa 1837. All of Jesse and Judith
Carpenter Tanner's children 1837-1846 listed their parents as Jesse and Judy
Tanner when they married.  Judy died 10 October 1859 and is reportedly buried
in the "Old Tanner Cemetery" on Craig Ridge.  Mary Carpenter Tanner died in
childbirth with her last child, William, and is supposedly buried in the same
graveyard. Jesse Tanner married 3rd Lucinda Raines 11 February 1860 and died 26
March 1885. Lucinda was a daughter of Uriah and Massie (Hughes) Gandee, a widow
of Abraham Raines and a first cousin, but once removed, to Jesse Tanner through
the Hughes family. They are buried in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Spencer,
West Virginia. Jesse and Lucinda's (Page 52) children, 1862-1872, all listed
their parents as Jesse and Lucy or Lucinda when they married. Parental listings
offer substantial proof of whom Jesse Tanner married and when he married them.

NOTE: Jesse "Buffalo" TANNER Sr. AND Jesse "Ike" TANNER may or may not be the
same person.  I think maybe, but there is enough debate to allow two until
further details come forth.
