Subject: carpenter research
Dear John,
I am rather new at genealogical research, and I have come across your name several times in looking at message boards, etc. I am hoping you can help me.My great grandfather was Alfred Madison Carpenter. I have info that he married Maria
Schoonover in Benton Co. Iowa in 1871, and that my grandfather was born there in 1874.
According to family story, they came to Kansas in a covered wagon when my grandfather was only a few years old.Do you happen to have any information on who are the parents of Alfred Madison Carpenter might be? I am stuck at this particular point in my research and hope you can point me in the right direction. Any help you have to offer will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Bonnie Pugh KershawMORE:

Subject: carpenter family research
I came across your email recently and would like more information on the research you have done on the Knight Carpenter line. What documentation do you have placing Alfred Madison Carpenter as Edwin Carpenter’s son? I have family information that Alfred was the last of 11 children and his oldest sister’s name was Roxeyann. She was born in 1812 and married Asa (Asahel Luther). In your research, I don’t see anything that matches any of these details and wonder if you have info.
Thanks for your assistance.

2614. Elhanan Winchester Carpenter
E-MAIL: From: "dean carpenter"
Elhannan moved his family to Dawes County in 1895 and they all married into the farm life. Some had children, not all of them. Gradually they all passed away or moved west for a better living. Farm life was not a life for most who tried it in western Nebraska it was a barely existing. My parents lived in Chadron until world war11 and then moved to California for better living. I left for 44 years for the same reason but love this country and knew I would return to retire here.MARRIAGE: 1856

Elhanan Winchester Carpenter
Birth: Apr. 13, 1833
Chenango County
New York, USA
Death: Sep. 20, 1909
Dawes County
Nebraska, USA
Elhanan was the son of Jesse Knight Carpenter and Mary 'Polly' Beckwith both of Vermont. When he was still a young boy, his parents moved to Parke County, Indiana and in about 1815 they moved to Illinois, then on to Iowa.
Elhanan married Charlotte Bradford Leighton, daughter of Isaac Leighton and Permelia Lancaster in 1856. According to the U.S. census [1856, 1860, 1870, & 1885] they lived in Lime Creek Township, Washington County, Iowa. His parents lived with them for a time.
Elhanan enlisted on Sep. 23, 1861 as a Private in Company F, 11th Iowa Infantry, mustered Oct. 8, 1861. He saw service in the Army of the Cumberland, at the Siege of Vicksburg and participated in 21 battles. It is said that at the Battle of Shiloh, he had three balls put through his hat at different places inside of 15 minutes. He was held prisoner at Andersonville for 9 months, 18 days. He received his discharge at Davenport, Iowa in 1865. [Source: Compendium of History, Reminiscence & Biography of Western Nebraska, Fold3 database, Ancestry]
The 1900 Federal census finds Elhanan and Charlotte in Dry Creek, Dawes County, Nebraska. Also noted in that census, they report that Charlotte bore 8 children, 5 of whom were living. Other records seem to show at least 9 children.
The children: Mariam M. [1857]; Martha M. [1859]; Muratte [1860]; Mary P. [1861-1897]; Stephen Winchester [1864]; Edwin Francis [1867]; Annettie [1869-1885]; Daniel W. [1872-1874]; Della E. [1874].
Cemetery records show that within the same plot with Elhanan and Charlotte, there are two females: daughter Mary P. and a Lois Carpenter. No records could be found to identify Lois as a daughter.
Two children, Annettie and Daniel, are buried in Wassonville Cemetery in Washington County, Iowa.

Charlotte was the first child born to Isaac Leighton and Permelia Lancaster. She was born in Maine, lived in Cattaraugus Co., New York and then arrived in Iowa with her parents and 2 siblings when she was not yet 10 years old.
She married Elhanan W. Carpenter [son of Jesse Knight Carpenter and Mary Polly Beckwith] on June 8, 1856. The couple is shown in the 1856 Iowa census and then again in the 1860 Federal Census [Lime Creek Twp], he as 24, she as 23 with two daughters, 3 and 1.
In the 1870 Federal census, Lime Creek Twp., shows 4 more children and [presumably] the addition of Elhanan's parents, Jesse K, [b. 1794, Vermont] and Mary [b 1800, Vermont] living with them.
The 1880 Federal census shows them with 6 children and only Jesse, Elhanan's father is living with them.
The two children who died young, Annettie and Daniel, are buried in Wassonville Cemetery in Washington County, Iowa.
More info can be found on Ancestry.com and there's a biography of the family in "Compendium of History Reminiscence & Biography of Western Nebraska," page 360.
