Classification: Will
Surnames: CARPENTER, GREEN
In the name of God, Amen.
I, Timothy Carpenter of the Town of Harmony, County of Chautauqua, and state of New York, being of sound mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, that is to say:
First---after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, I give and bequeath to my wife Sally B. Carpenter during her natural life, the use of the part of my house that I live in now as described(to wit) consisting of the upright and the room west of it used by me now for a kitchen with a bedroom west and a butry south of the kitchen. It is my will for my wife to have the use of my farm and all my personal property if it should require so much for her support. After her death if she should survive me, it is to be equally divided between my three children, providing my son William P. Carpenter pays a note that we gave together to ?????. If he fails to pay it, it must come from his portion with annual interest. It is further my will that Samuel Green shall manage the property, have full power to let the farm and to manage the personal property as a prudent farmer should and to let my wife have as much of the proceeds as is necessary for her support. Likewise I make, constitute and appoint Samuel J. Green of Harmony Chautauqua County and State of New York to be executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the Twenty-fifth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy eight.

Signed
Timothy Carpenter

The above written instrument was subscribed by the said Timothy Carpenter in our presence, and acknowledged by him to each of us: and he at the same time declared the above instrument, so subscribed to be his last Will and Testament: and we, at his request, have signed our names as witnesses hereto, in his presence and in the presence of each other, and written opposite our names our respective places of residence.

Jane T(?) Morris Blockville, New York
Herbert M. Carpenter Blockville, New York
DeWitt M. Carpenter Blockville, New York

The name mentioned in the will as being owed money by William Carpenter was not readable. It appears to be Jane with the last name unknown. I am not sure. The will was found among some family papers.

BIO:
http://www.historicmadison.org/Madison's%20Past/connectingwithourpast/pumpcarpenter.html
Stephen D. "Pump" Carpenter
One of Madison’s most flamboyant early newspapermen was Stephen Decatur “Pump” Carpenter. He earned his nickname in 1853 after inventing a Universal Rotary Force Pump that was used to drain water from lead mines.
He arrived in Madison in 1850, going to work for the Argus and then the Argus & Democrat newspapers.
In the fall and winter of 1853 Monks Hall, at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Doty Street, served as headquarters for a group of lobbyists, among them Secretary of State William Barstow, who were attempting to obtain legislation favorable to the Rock River Valley Union Railroad. Subsequently, the railroad’s proposed bill passed, and legislators received financial rewards. In 1854 Carpenter purchased the Daily Patriot newspaper from Horace A. Tenney and launched a personal crusade to “pump” corruption from the Capitol. He dubbed the railroad group “Barstow and the Forty Thieves.”
Barstow was elected governor in 1854, and Carpenter accused him of corruption in awarding a contract to his friend Andrew Proudfit to build the Insane Asylum (now Mendota Mental Health Institute). He battled daily with the editors of the Argus, Barstow’s party newspaper. An editorial from November 3, 1855 was typical: “We have been endeavoring to pump truth from the Argus for a long while, but one might as well attempt to extract blood from a turnip. There is no lack of vacuum however – the ‘suction’ is excellent, and we can pump ‘lie’ from it, as fast as the great sea monster can suck in brine.”
In November 1855, Barstow was reelected governor, defeating challenger Coles Bashford after illegal supplementary ballots were added to his vote total. Carpenter took the lead in fighting for Barstow’s ouster, which finally occurred on March 21, 1856. On April 9 friends gave him a gold watch inscribed: “Presented to S. D. Carpenter by his friends of Madison, Wisconsin, as a token of their regard for the effectual aid he rendered in ‘pumping out’ the ‘Forty Thieves’ from the State Capitol.”
Bashford, however, proved to be corrupt as well, so Carpenter editorialized vigorously on behalf of Alexander Randall in the 1857 gubernatorial election. After Randall won by 118 votes out of roughly 90,000 cast, Carpenter celebrated in his November 21 issue:
Ten Million Cheers!!
Crow, Old Rooster! Crow!!
The Forty Thieves Cleared Out!
Randall Elected Governor!
Honesty Triumphant!
The Patriot Fully Sustained!
There is a God in Israel!
Carpenter suspended the Patriot in November 1864 after unsuccessfully supporting George McClellan for president. He then embarked on a second career as an inventor. Among his inventions were a power press, a ship with concave sides to deflect cannon balls that he proposed to Navy Secretary Gideon Wells in 1864, an automatic grain binder that he sold to McCormick, a veneer cutter, and a secret ballot machine. He invented a typesetting machine that was unfortunately run over by a train while it was being unloaded. He also drew up plans for an eight-track elevated railroad from New York to San Francisco. This $100 million project had a four-track upper tier, four-track lower tier, and 60 electric powerhouses set 83 miles apart.
Pump died in Omaha sometime after 1905.

DESCRIPTION
Photographic calling card of Stephen Decatur Carpenter (ca. 1821-1906), an influential newspaperman who settled in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1851, where he became associated with several newspapers: with Horace A. Tenney he was co-publisher of the "Argus"; with Beriah Brown he was publisher of the "Argus" and "Democrat"; and from 1854 to 1864 he was associated with various individuals in the publication of the "Wisconsin Patriot". Later Carpenter established papers in Fond du Lac and Oshkosh before returning to Madison. Carpenter was also an inventor and his patents for two rotary pumps resulted in his nickname "Pump."

IDA EMILINE b. ca. 1850 Timothy Carpenter Descendants Page 157 STEPHEN was the compiler of reference #2, which this compiler used as the basis for the genealogical up-dating of this project for posterity. He had been a newspaper publisher and editor in various places. Prior to becoming editor of the Prairie Democrat of Freeport, Ill., he had been editor of the Girard, Pa. Free Press. Later, he was instrumental in starting and editing the first daily at Madison, Wisc., the Wisconsin Patriot, and was with it throughout the Civil War. He then joined his son ALBERT in publishing the Patriot at Carthage, Mo. STEPHEN was affectionately referred to as "PUMP" CARPENTER due to a pump he invented for a grain binder. The McCormick Company purchased his patent. He also invented a type-setting machine and a voting machine. Just prior to his death, he was engaged in selling the voting machine to the State of Missouri. He claimed the machine was infallible and could be purchased for $50 each instead of the $500 per machine the State was then paying. Some records indicate STEPHEN was a Wisconsin State Senator, but this is an error. The State Archivist reports his only connection with state government was a two-year printing contract which was financially disastrous to STEPHEN. He is reported to have received a gold watch from the STATE for exposing irregularities in the awarding of printing contracts. His second spouse MARY is listed in the 1860 census (3rd ward, Madison, Wisc.) as age 36 and born in Vermont (Vol. 1, p. 260, census). She reportedly was interred under her maiden name of Miss STRICKLAND; her obit, however, refers to her as Mrs. MARY B. CARPENTER, wife of S.D. CARPENTER. The lot where she and STEPHEN are interred was purchased a week prior to her death by her brother-in law, LAWSON REYNOLDS. His spouse, sister to MARY, died the Friday preceding MARYS death. She is buried between MARY and STEPHEN in a row of three graves. In 1967 the cemetary caretaker said STEPHEN'S gravesite is not under perpetual care, nor does it have a stone or marker. NOTE:  A Journalist.

Emiline Cornilia Britton

Died in a cholera epidemic and buried there.

5523. Ida Emiline Carpenter

Number 634-5 in the Timothy Carpenter book.
Most old records do not include this Ida.  The compiler of the above record
found her name in an old letter of Stephen, her father.  The fact that she died
early would indicate the second Ida of the family was named after her, as often
was the custom.  She was recorded to have died during the cholera epidemic and
a short time prior to her mother's passing.

Mary B. Newton

Buried in the SE corner grave, Lot 18, Block 13.
Listed in the 1860 census of Madison, WI (Vol.1, p.260)
The lot where Mary and her Husband, Stephen are interred was purchased a week
prior to her death by her brother-in-law, Lawson Reynolds.  His spouse, sister
to Mary, died the Friday preceding Mary's death.  She is buried between Mary
and Stephen in a row of three graves.  In 1967 the cemetery caretaker said
Stephen's gravesite is not under perpetual care, nor does it have a stone or
marker.
One record indicates STRICKLAND as a maiden name, but no mention of previous
marriage is found.

2930. Emmett S. Carpenter

Number 236-4 in the Timothy Carpenter book.
Emmett was recorded as residing in MO in letters of administration of his
father's estate dated 12-7-1885.  Emmett was mentioned in the 1850 census of
Harmony Twp with his parents.  Lydia is mentioned in the 1875 census of Harmony.  One old record
spells her name as Olivia.

5544. Emily Ella "Ella" Carpenter

Number 655-5 in the Timothy Carpenter book.
Ella is mentioned in the 1865 census of Panama and on an 1861 school list.
Her niece, Ada, in a 10-26-1959 letter records Ella's married name was Elder,
she was deceased, and that her father, Abner resided with her in Puget Sound
area in his latter years.
This contradicts Abners's statements in a letter to his brother Isaac that Eva,
not Ella, wed E.G. Elder.  We accept Ada's word as Eva wed a Mr. Diamond.  Ada
also said her older brothers and sister were deceased (by 1959).
