Will - Joshua Carpenter,29 July 1841

The following Will was probated in Franklin Co., GA 6 Nov 1843:

"In the name of God Amen. I, Joshua Carpenter being in declining
state of health but of sound and disposing mind and memory, I do
make and constitute this my last Will and Testament. I give my body
to the dust from whence I was taken to be returned decently at the
discretion of my family, and I recommend my soul to God who gave it,
I dispose of my worldly goods in the following manner (viz)
I bequeath to my beloved daughter Susannah Harmon and her heirs
one dollar, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Behemia
Nelms, to my son James Carpenter and my daughter Elizabeth Boatright
and my sons Absolom and Joshua S. Carpenter and my daughter Rhoda
Hammond [Harmon] and Leah Bond one dollar each after my just debts
being paid they all having previously received their portion of my
estate. I bequeath to my beloved wife Agness Carpenter two negroes
one by the name of Charity and the other by the name of Willis during
her natural life or widowhood and if intermarried then the two
negroes before mentioned shall belong equally to Martin and Hesterann
and their increase. Money lent out for the benefit of the house of
the said Joshua Carpenter the interest to be paid early one third
of the same interest to be paid to the widow and wife of the said
Carpenter and the balance to go towards schooling Martin and
Hesterann. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife and daughter Agness
Carpenter and Hesterann Carpenter four hundred acres of land to be
divided equally between them it being the place where I now live,
and to my beloved son Martin I give and bequeath two hundred acres
of land lying on Reed Creek and on Hattinsford Road. And lastly I
constitute make and ordain my friends John B. Wade Thomas Asku and
Agness Carpenter the sole executors of this my last Will and
Testament. And I do utterly disallow and disannul all the former
Wills by me made, hereby ratifying and confirming this and no other
to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I the said
Joshua Carpenter have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 29th
of July 1841.

[Submitter's notes: Joshua Carpenter was born 12 Sep 1771 and on
29 Dec 1790 in Culpeper Co., VA married Leah Smith. On 19 Jun 1800
Joshua and Leah deeded 131 acres in Madison Co., VA to George Rasor.
On 6 Feb 1804 Joshua Carpenter and 7 in family obtained a land grant
in Elbert Co., GA. He lived in Elbert Co. for many years. On 28 Nov
1825 in Franklin Co., GA he married 2nd Agnes Simms. Both Joshua and
Leah were descendants of German families living in the Germanna
Colonies of Virginia, the Carpenter name being changed from
Zimmerman (Zimmerman being a carpenter in German)]

Margaret Bowie Slaughter Carpenter

The stone reads "Mrs. Margaret B. Carpenter."
She was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Bowie (Pendleton) Slaughter, and granddaughter of Capt. James Pendleton & his wife Catherine (Bowie)from whom she received her middle name.
She was the wife of Judge Samuel Carpenter, married 1815.
