COMMENT:
New Hanover County, North Carolina.
Located in the Low Country or Tidewater of North Carolina, the county was formed in 1729 as New Hanover Precinct of Bath County, from Craven Precinct. It was named for the House of Hanover, a German royal family then ruling Great Britain. In 1734 parts of New Hanover Precinct became Bladen Precinct and Onslow Precinct.  With the abolition of Bath County in 1739, all of its constituent precincts became counties.

New Hanover County, North Carolina
First Settled / By:  1720s / English/Welsh, Scots-Irish
...
In May of 1713, Barren Island (Bald Head) was granted to Landgrave Thomas Smith, and in 1725 Governor George Burrington began to distribute land along the Cape Fear for colonization. Many of the new settlers came from South Carolina because of the lower taxes in North Carolina. Maurice Moore founded Brunswick Town on his grant on the west bank of the river - in present-day Brunswick County - and by June of 1726, a map of the town was filed with the Secretary of the Province. The next year a ferry was in operation across the river.

In 1729, New Hanover Precinct was formed from Craven Precinct. New Hanover was named after the house of Hanover, of King George II. By 1730, a few Quakers settled in the Cape Fear area. Little is known about them, for all records have been lost.

In 1731, the lower Cape Fear spawned a few wealthy families whose lives became connected by marriage and economic interests. Thirty five members of the "Family," as historian Lawrence Lee termed them, owned 115,000 acres of land privately. The "Family" consisted of the Moores–Maurice, Roger, and Nathaniel, Edward Moseley, John Baptista Ashe, Samuel and John Swann, Thomas Jones, Edward Smith, Mosely Vail, Eleazer Allen, John Porter, and John Grange. In April, Governor George Burrington, who counted the Brunswick Town clique among his many enemies, asked the General Assembly to "pass an Act for building a Town on Cape Fear and appointing Commissioners for that purpose."

The present site of Wilmington was laid out in 1733 and it was first called New Carthage, then New Liverpool, then New Town or Newton. John Watson granted 640 acres in New Hanover Precinct. Watson, along with Joshua Grainger, Michael Higgins, and James Wimble were the chief owners of land on which Wilmington now stands. In April of 1733, they joined in laying out the town after a plan similar to that of Brunswick, originally settled in 1726 across the Cape Fear River.

Governor Gabriel Johnston's taking office in 1734 continued the feud with the "Family." By declaration he opened the Land Office on May 13, 1735, in Newton (Wilmington) to "prevent confusion and unnecessary disputes," and he ordered the Court of Exchequer and the Court of Oyer and Terminer to convene there instead of in Brunswick Town. The fortunes of Brunswick Town declined from that time forward. It was largely deserted and was burned during the American Revolutionary War. On the other hand, Governor Johnston reported "amazing progress" in Cape Fear development during Newton's first eight years.

There is no proof of where Peter was born and it is conjecture as to him being connected to or related to Owen - 141916 as far as I can tell.
All I know is that PETER shows up on EVENT DATE: June 15, 1780 in Wilmington, Hanover, North Carolina receiving a Revolutionary War pay voucher. Peter got 60 pounds and 20 pounds 5 shillings. On EVENT DATE: December 18 he again receives another pay voucher.
(Recap of census data)
Peter had the following children:
8 M- WILLIAM CARPENTER - 204204 was born about 1800/1804 in of, New   Hanover, North Carolina, USA. He died about 3 July, 1824. In New Hanover, North Carolina, USA.
9 M- JOHN CARPENTER - 209502 was born about 1803/1805 in New Hanover, North Carolina USA.
I have tried to find information on these children but thus far have come up empty handed. If a descendant of these children or Peter could be found today and be DNA tested we could find out if they are related to OWEN - 141916 1730/1740.

John and Kevin,

Apologies for the lagtime in replying -- 4-day workweeks are always longer than 5-day workweeks in terms of hours worked.  This is a line I've done substantial research on in the past.  I haven't seen any original research on them since Ken Morrow 6-7 years ago.  There are female descendants for whom the marriages and children are known, but who cannot be placed without further analysis of the records -- they are especially important because they often were the keepers of the family history. This is a summary of the line of descent:

Owen Carpenter, born ca. 1765, probably in NC, married by ca. 1785 in Moore Co. NC to Sarah Smith {she is sometimes erroneously listed as "Sarah Rachel Smith" which is an indication that the researcher has not done original research}.  In 1790 he was enumerated in Montgomery Co. NC.  He was in Franklin Co. GA by 1798.  By 1820, he had followed two of his sons to Mississippi and settled in Lawrence Co. MS, where he was enumerated as "Owen Carpenter Snr."  He doesn't appear as a head of household in the 1830 census but may have resided with a daughter and thus would not have shown up as a head of household. He died before 1833, in which year his widow Sarah was listed as head of household in Holmes Co. MS. In the December court term of 1836, one of his sons was appointed administrator of Sarah's estate in Carroll Co. MS; the estate was divided in the September 1841 term of court.  Not all of Owen's and Sarah's descendants are known.  Some can be placed using deeds, tax lists, the 1820-1880 censuses, the probate of Sarah (Smith) Carpenter's estate, and various other sources.  Owen was father of:

- William Carpenter, born ca. 1786 in NC, died after 1850.  In 1813 he was listed on a tax roll in Lawrence Co. MS.  He enlisted in Lawrence Co. MS in 1815 in Captain William Smith's Company, 13th (Nixon's) Regiment of Mississippi Militia and served at New Orleans in the War of 1812.  He signed a petition from the inhabitants of Marion Co. and Lawrence Co. MS in 1815.  He married ca. 1810 to Susan _?_(maiden surname not known), who was born ca. 1788 in NC.  They were enumerated in Lawrence Co. MS in 1820, in Copiah Co. MS in 1830, and in Yalobusha Co. MS in 1840 and 1850.  William was father of:

-- Green Carpenter, born ca. 1830 in MS, died after 1880.  He married by ca. 1853 to Nancy _?_, who was born ca. 1835 in MS.  He is not yet absolutely proved as a son of William Carpenter, but he is posited here because in 1902 his son Wiley M. Carpenter witnessed an affidavit as a nephew of Derrel Carpenter, placing this Green Carpenter as a brother of Derrel, who was a proved son of William of Owen.  Green Carpenter was enumerated in Clark Co. AR in 1860, in Hot Spring Co. AR in 1870, and in Garland Co. AR in 1880.  He served in the Civil War in the 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry, with Derrell Carpenter, George W. Carpenter, John Carpenter, John W. Carpenter, Stephen H. Carpenter, and William F. M. Carpenter.  Father of:

--- Green H. Carpenter, born in Dec 1861 per the 1900 census.  He married first on 28 Dec 1886 in Garland Co. AR to Mollie E. Moose, second ca. 1899 to Alice, who was born in Jan 1881 in GA, and third on 10 Aug 1910 in Garland Co. AR to Annie Chancelor, who was born ca. 1894 in AR.  Father of:

---- William Arthur Carpenter, born ca. 1887 in Garland Co. AR, married in 1911 to Mary E., who was born ca. 1892 in TX.  He completed his WWIDRC in Kaufman Co. TX in Jan 1917.  In 1930 he and his family were enumerated in Kaufman Co. TX with children:

----- 1. Elma L. Carpenter (son), born ca. 1912 in TX. <-- This appears to be your Elmer
----- 2. Bertie M. Carpenter (daughter), born ca. 1915.
----- 3. Sallie B. Carpenter, born ca. 1920.
----- 4. William A. Carpenter, born ca. 1926.

If you can add to the genealogy, I'd like to keep a record of it in my research files.  I'm primarily interested in the generations prior to 1860 -- I put most of my research time into sorting out all the early southern lines and finding their origins.

Subject: Re: Southern Carpenters - a reply from Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project
David,
As far as I know, it is not even in dispute that you descend from Owen Carpenter (b. ~1765, d. ~1828, MS) and Sarah Smith. Terry?
I do not know how much ground Terry has covered with you, but there almost certainly was no "Thomas Owen Carpenter." My very own uncle, Morris Carpenter, started that by taking a liberty he never should have taken, due to his inexperience at the time, back in the late '70s when he did his own research. He discovered my ancestor, Temple(ton) Carpenter (b. ~1768, NC), and traced him from MS back to NC. Bible records established that Temple was son of a Thomas Carpenter, however there is no known surviving record of a Thomas Carpenter in Anson/Montgomery or Cumberland/Moore Co., NC at that time. By default, my uncle just assumed that Owen Sr. of Cumberland/Moore must be Thomas, as if he were fully Thomas Owen Carpenter. It is not out of the question, but certainly not proven (no record exists which names a Thomas Owen Carpenter), and probably unlikely. Instead Thomas likely died young (Temple was enumerated in 1790 - and even earlier in 1786(?) in the state census, I think - as a single bachelor and head-of-household, which was consistent at that time with a man's father being dead). Of course, Owen Sr. was dead then! But I still think we are looking for a Thomas, distinct from Owen Sr., who died young, perhaps in the war.
Your Owen (b. ~1765), on the other hand, has always appeared to me to be the son of Owen Sr., based in no small part on the names he gave his children and in the order in which he gave them. Now it should be emphasized that naming is never in any way, shape, or form, proof of anything; however, the names Owen of Lawrence gave his children remain remarkable nonetheless. Catherine is there, as is Dennis (and probably others that I cannot remember), and they are right where you would expect them to be if Owen of Lawrence were (a) son of Owen Sr., and (b) using a certain extremely common naming pattern of the time. Note that Temple, although he named a son Owen, included none of those distinctive names associated with Owen Sr.'s family. Instead, he alone of all the Carpenters from that area named a son Solomon, and Solomon (b. ~1770) alone of all the Carpenters from that area named a son Temple, and circumstantially I think you have to lean toward Temple and Solomon being brothers, both sons of the mysterious Thomas (indeed Solomon alone of all them named a son Thomas). Furthermore, both Temple and Solomon are enumerated in Montgomery Co., NC in 1790 as young bachelors and heads-of-household, consistent again with their father being dead (men did not leave home back then until they got married). Your Owen shared Temple's migration pattern and Solomon did not (he went to Bedford Co., TN). But I believe that is only because each man migrated with his wife's family (which from observation I have come to suspect was the general rule), and both your Owen (b. ~1765) and my Temple were connected to that Smith family through marriage (Owen directly and Temple indirectly). Remember that they were part of the Nathan Smith Settlement in Franklin Co., GA.
I am delighted that you joined the project! We are about to stand on much firmer ground with our speculations about this family. Now, if a male Carpenter descendant of Owen of Tippah were to surface and test, we would be on that much firmer ground (recall the "German" speculations about Owen Sr., suggesting that Owen Sr. was not even related to Group 7). Again, I suspect that Owen (b. ~1777 of Tippah was Owen Sr.'s grandson. If we are dealing with two unrelated families, one German and one British, the structures will become a lot clearer after both your test and the test of an Owen of Tippah descendant. On the other hand, if everybody tests as Group 7, then we will be pretty much where we have always been, excepting that we will have ruled out the Owen Sr. "German" story.
BTW, I see below in the thread reference to another genealogical "urban legend," much like my uncle's "Thomas Owen Carpenter" fiasco, that being the statement that Owen Sr.'s wife Catherine was a Shamberger. I believe I personally was responsible for that one. I merely threw out that possibility to somebody once, based upon the fact that Owen Sr.'s grave today sits on Shamberger land. But that of course proves nothing. Yet there are plenty of people today who now firmly believe that Owen Sr.'s wife Catherine was a Shamberger, all because I was insufficently cautious with my words once, maybe 15 years ago.

COMMENT:  By Ed Carpenter  pleascyd@gmail.com (June 2021)
Owen and his family resided in Moore and Montgomery Counties until around 1794.
Owen was enumerated In the Montgomery County 1790 Census. It showed him as 25 years of age with 3 males 0-16, 1 male 16+, and 3 females and 4 others. Males 0-16 John, age 1, William age 4, Adam age 14. Ages 16+, Dennis, age 18, Mary age 21. Some must not have been his children. Adam, Dennis, and Mary may have been his siblings.
Owen shows up in Franklin Co., Georgia by 1795. Prior to leaving for Georgia, Moore Co. records of 1794 show Owen Carpenter 1773-1864, John Carpenter 1780, and a Sarah Carpenter (1782), orphaned children, who were bound to him and the court ordered his Bond be discharged. Terry Carpenter and John R. Carpenter administrators at the Carpenter Cousins Project, are fairly certain that the OWEN giving up the children is our OWEN Carpenter - 139274 born 1765. They believe OWEN was caring for the three and he was their Uncle and not their Father. They believe Owen -142307 and John - 142308 ended up in Lincoln Co. Tennessee and later Tippah Co. Mississippi. It is not known what happen to Sarah - 142309. They speculate that JOHN Carpenter - 141919 (1754), another son of OWEN 1730/1740 is their father. JOHN presumably died young (1780’s) and left three orphans and his brother OWEN (1765) ended up caring for them. Owen was preparing to leave for Franklin County, Georgia, at the time of the above court record, where he was in 1795, which may explain why he was giving up the orphans.
John and Terry also believe the orphan John - 142308 born 1780’s is the same John 1780’s that married Penelope McAfee in Williamson, Tennessee in 1808 and eventually ended up in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. He is believed to be the father of Adam Haywood Carpenter.
Sometime after the above court hearing in 1794 OWEN - 139274 moved his family to Franklin County, Georgia. It appears that Owen’s father-in-law Nathan Smith had moved his family there around 1791 to establish the Nathan Smith Settlement and Owen followed him there. Prior to the Revolutionary War, in 1773 the Cherokee and Creek Indians ceded large areas of land to the Georgia Colony and settlers started moving there. After the Revolutionary War individual states gained sovereignty over the back country and many states, including Georgia, concluded treaties with Native American tribes and encouraged people from other states to come and set up settlements. This is probably what prompted Nathan Smith and Owen, and many other families in North Carolina to move to Georgia. Georgia began granting land deeds to settlers between 1783 and 1788. The exact date Owen and Nathan Smith actually acquired the land is not known but is appears that Nathan and others to begin clearing the land for the Nathan Smith Settlement in 1791.
Shortly after arriving in Georgia, they learned that the lands they were deeded were disputed by the Cherokee and Creek tribes. The tribes complained that the Nathan Smith Settlement was on their land. Unfortunately, the land grant system was not well regulated and many settlers were sold or granted land that was yet to be surveyed. That was the case with the Nathan Smith Settlement.
An Indian Agent named Benjamin Hawkins was sent from Washington to settle the issue and he decided in the favor of the Indians. This controversy continued and in 1798 the settlers, OWEN, Nathan Smith, Stephen Smith, Nicholas Smith, James Minyard and 41 others petitioned Governor James Jackson to have the line rerun or take such action to protect them in the possession of their homes. This resulted in the “Four-Mile-Purchase” of 1804 where the Indians ceded a strip of land four miles wide and twenty miles but the controversy continued for years as some of the settlers were left outside the new line.
OWEN shows up on the Franklin County, Georgia Tax lists for 1800, 1801, 1803, 1805, and 1807.
However, sometime prior to 1813, Owen and many others settlers became discouraged and decided to sell their lands, warranted against all but Indian claims, and moved to new lands in Mississippi that were given up by the Choctaw Indians.  Nathan Smith and his wife remained in Georgia and is believed to be buried in Banks County, Georgia.
In 1812 is believed OWEN and most of his family moved to Carroll and Lawrence County, Mississippi. Stephen and Nicholas Smith, James Minyard, Temple Carpenter also called it quits and moved their families at the same time. Each of the families purchased land in the Mississippi Delta of Lawrence and Carroll Counties, along Fair River, Bahala, Bogue Chitto, and McCall Creek areas. Owen was enumerated in the Mississippi Census as Owen Carpenter Senior for that year.
Owen shows up in the 1820 United States Census in Lawrence County. Mississippi as follows:
Free White males - under 10: 1
Free White males - 10 thru 15: 1
Free White males - 26 thru 44: 1
Free White males - 45 and over: 2
Free White females - 26 thru 44: 1
          Slaves - male- 14 thru 25: 1
Free White persons - under 16: 2
Free White person - over 25: 4
Total Free White Persons: 6
Total Slaves: 1
Owen does not appear in the 1830 Census but may have resided with a daughter and thus would not have shown up as a head of household. He died before 1833, in which year his widow, Sarah, was listed as head of household in Holmes Co. Mississippi. In the December court terms of 1836, one of his sons was appointed administrator of Sarah’s estate in Carroll Co. Mississippi and the estate was divided in September 1841 terms of the court.
OWEN and SARAH had the following children:
       1.  10 M - WILLIAM CARPENTER - 139273 was born about 1886 in Moore Co. N.C.  and died on July 3, 1863.

From Ken Morrow: bulldog38@prodigy.net :  There are a few court records in Moore Co. which shed some additional light, but I note that your Owen had a son Dennis and a daughter Catharine and many grandchildren named Adam (and Dennis and Catharine).  The Owen of TN had none of these accepting a grandson named Adam, I believe. On the weight of this and other evidence, I believe that your Owen of Lawrence Co., MS is indeed Owen CARPENTER, Jr., son of Owen CARPENTER, Sr. and wife Catharine (SHEFFIELD?) of Moore Co., Owen CARPENTER, Sr. being the patriot militiaman who was killed on his doorstep along with an infant son then held in his arms, by a single musket ball fired by a marauding band of Tories. The lineage of the other Owen is far from proven and I believe the claim that he is Owen Jr. does a disservice to you and other descendants of Owen CARPENTER of Lawrence Co., MS who may rightfully have the honor of passing that fantastic legacy on to your grandchildren. I speak as a descendant of Temple CARPENTER, claimed to be a son of a Thomas CARPENTER by Bible record so it does not immediately appear that I descend from Owen, Sr.
Owen’ Father, Thomas Carpenter (b. abt. 1740 in NC / d. 1780 in NC) married Catherine Shamberger (b. abt. 1743 in NC / d. UNK) around 1759 in NC.  They lived in Bear Creek, Moore Co., NC.  Thomas is buried in Shamberger Cemetery, Montgomery Co., NC.  Thomas and his youngest son died at the hands British soldiers by being shot during the American Revolution.  For more details on the Carpenter family, see Surname: Carpenter.
Thomas and Catherine Carpenter had 7 children:  Jonathan Carpenter (b. abt. 1760 in NC), Solomon Carpenter (b. abt. 1763 in NC), Dennis Carpenter (b. abt. 1765 in NC), Owen Carpenter (b. abt. 1767 in NC), and Temple Carpenter (b. 1769 in NC), Adam Carpenter (b. 2 Jul. 1771 in NC), and Infant Carpenter (b. & d. 1780 in NC).

5. John Carpenter

Parent link not proven. But one descendant Y-DNA test matches Group 24!

Owen Sr.'s speculative son John (the John in the records around 1780 and speculative father of the three orphans) would certainly have been born earlier than 1764 and almost certainly earlier than 1760 (earlier than brother Owen of Lawrence).
More generally, all we can reasonably surmise from the records (in my opinion anyway) is that Owen (b. ~1765) was of virtual necessity son of Owen Sr. (as opposed to most of the current research out there!), and that the three orphans were almost certainly his nephews and niece and grandchildren of Owen Sr. by another son of Owen Sr. who appears to have died. The name of that deceased son is not precisely known, although a John who appears in the records around 1780 might be the leading candidate, and indeed the name John is arguably consistent with how the orphans later named their own children. However, I would just leave a question mark in the place of that speculative son and father of the orphans absent the necessary proof, or possibly use John with a question mark ("John(?)"). Ken

John Carpenter, b c1760s, d prior to 19 May 1794 when his posited brother "Owen Carpenter came into court, and gave up Owen Carpenter, Jr., John Carpenter and Sarah Carpenter, orphan children, who were bound to him and the court ordered his bond to be discharged." Terry

7. Adam Carpenter

COMMENT:
I do not believe there is really any doubt that Adam (b. 1771) was son of Owen Sr. such that he is definitely not related to Group 16. Unfortunately, I am not sure that there are today any male descendants of Adam and Dennis to test (definitely not of Dennis, if I remember correctly). Ken (2012)
NOTE: A Y-DNA test on a descendant does not match the genetic fingerprint of Group 24 represented by Owen Carpenter-141916. Sep 2015 JRC

Hi John,
See the attached which from my understanding is accurate. I have documents that also go further than Adam Carpenter but this may be a good start. Also, if there is any data you are missing from my line such as cousins and nieces/nephews, please let me know.
Best, Todd

Adam married MATILDA Mollie/Milly SHEFFIELD -177527 in 1799.  She was born 1776 in North Carolina and died 1881 in Edgefield, South Carolina. Adam and Milly had the following children:

31 M - JOHN HENRY CARPENTER - 177526 was born about 1801/1802 and died on April 02, 1870.
32 M - DENNIS CARPENTER. - 198606 was born about 1812 and died October 1877.
33 M - WILLIAM CARPENTER - born 1807 and died 1860.
34 M - ISHAM CARPENTER -born about 1809 and died about 1840.

Notes for Adam: Probate date October 07, 1851. Back in 2012 Ken Carpenter felt he needed to have a descendant of Adam to do a YDNA test to place him in Group 24. Fortunately, I found a Lawrence Jennings Carpenter through Kay deBianca and encouraged him to get tested. He did and he proved to be a descendant of Adam.
