-- Green Carpenter, born ca. 1830 in MS, died after 1880.  He married by ca. 1853 to Nancy _?_, who was born ca. 1835 in MS.  He is not yet absolutely proved as a son of William Carpenter, but he is posited here because in 1902 his son Wiley M. Carpenter witnessed an affidavit as a nephew of Derrel Carpenter, placing this Green Carpenter as a brother of Derrel, who was a proved son of William of Owen.  Green Carpenter was enumerated in Clark Co. AR in 1860, in Hot Spring Co. AR in 1870, and in Garland Co. AR in 1880.  He served in the Civil War in the 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry, with Derrell Carpenter, George W. Carpenter, John Carpenter, John W. Carpenter, Stephen H. Carpenter, and William F. M. Carpenter.  Father of: Green H. Carpenter.

Subject: RE: Southern Carpenters - a reply from Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project
Gentlemen,
Thank you for your response. It was very enlightening and overwhelming at the same time. I am convinced that I am related to Owen Carpenter (1765-1828) based on Census records and the Will of Sarah Carpenter.

QUESTION: Could there be more than one Nathan Carpenter b. abt 1800 GA in MS during this time?  See census info below. Which is which?

Subject: Lineage of Louisa Carpenter, abt. 1839, Carroll County, MS to 1897, Eastland County, TX
I recently learned of Carpenter Cousins and requested the amazing download to review. I was surprised that the children of Dennis and Elizabeth Wallace were not included, so I decided to offer the research I have saved to my ancestry.com public tree entitled "Cook Family" and under the owner of the account named Larry Caldwell with this email address. I hope you will find it of value to accept.
< See ANCESTRY below >
My search began with only knowing the name of my father’s father as Edward Robinson Cook, and his parents as “Ma and Pa” Cook, all from near Ranger, Eastland County, TX, where my father was born in 1895. The family oral history told to me was that Ed Cook’s parents had come from Yazoo, MS in an ox cart from where Pa Cook was and overseer on a plantation.
My first clue found was an internet story of Cook Cemetery listing W H Cook and wife Lievriesce Carpenter. () Also named were Robinsons related to Cooks, a surname which seemed to connect with my grandfather, so I had confidence that I was on the right path. Eventually I identified the original homesteaders where the cemetery lies as William Henry (1830-1886) and Louisa Carpenter Cook (1837-1897).
Since then I’ve learned that the property has been visited by other descendants of William and Louisa Cook, but though their exact graves are not marked, other known family graves are. I had inherited tintype pictures of Ma and Pa Cook which have since been donated to the current owner of property enveloping that ranch and cemetery, part of today’s “Cook Canyon Ranch” which can be viewed on the internet. This current owner permits descendants to visit the cemetery, but in the 1950s a former owner denied access to my family though the cemetery had been deeded to the Cemetery Association in 1935.
I have obtained copies of the original proving of the Cook homestead (after three years of residence), Survey #42 on the waters of the South Palo Pinto Creek, tributary to Brazos River, made by affidavit of W H Cook, 1876, Patent # 361, Vol. 5, Class Mil. Pre. to W H Cook on 20 Mar 1877-160 acres. I also have copies of the Mar 1900 sale of the homestead by heirs to son Joseph Clayton Cook in consideration of providing for Louisa for the remainder of her life.
Going by a grave marker “Toby” in Cook Cemetery story, I found William H Cook’s father Tobias, and relatively quickly had the Cook side reasonably identified. I located WH Cook-age 30 from NC as overseer of AT McDowell’s plantation and Lourecy age 23 from MS in the 1860 census of Yazoo County, MS, living on a plantation with daughter Emma, age 2, and son John 8 mo. old. Much later I found that A (Alexander) T McDowell was a “Gen Wright” which is defined as a wheel wright, and prior to Yazoo County he had lived in Attala County, where Wm Cook and Louisa had also lived. In Yazoo, the adjoining plantation was owned by a maker of wagons. It seems s reasonable assumption to me that William and Louisa emigrated to Texas in an ox cart made by these two men, and further of interest a Jun 1866 MS tax assessment listed William Cook as “conveyancer” in Columbus, Lowndes County, MS. Per the Cook Cemetery story and the birth locations of the children, I followed their Mississippi to Texas migration to Burnett and Navarro Counties to Eastland Co.
My first hint of Louisa’s family was a 15 yo Louisa Carpenter as living in the household of Thomas and Frannie Bell (later identified as Beall) in 1850, Southern Division, Carroll County, MS. Assuming that Louisa had to be from the Frannie rather than Thomas Bell side of that family, I found a hint of Louisa in ancestry.com family trees to be the daughter of Dennis Carpenter of Carroll County, MS, the same county where my Louisa married William H Cook.
I began identifying the children of Dennis and I noticed the repetition of children’s names in both Dennis’ children and Louisa’s children, particularly “Purdom” which is unusual enough to be derived from a surname. I have only been able to find that surname on the same page of Civil War records of William Henry Cook, but have not yet found whether the Purdom was family or family friend. It seemingly is a connection to the Carpenters and just as possibly the Cooks as both families lived in proximity and Purdom was another Dennis Carpenter son. But I found the similarity of all the names of Cook and Carpenter families compelling. One child of William and Louisa Cook was named Dennis and all the rest bore one or both names which could have been either Dennis’ family names as well as Cook family names.
I added Dennis in my family tree as the father of Louisa Carpenter Cook as sort of a fishing expedition, and began receiving notices of matches from my ancestry.com DNA testing that indicated Dennis as a common ancestor, so I began researching that entire family and extended families in earnest, and found all information to be credible of this family as my Carpenter ancestors. The only unknown is a daughter born to Dennis and Elizabeth Wallace Carpenter abt. 1827, enumerated as female <5 yo in 1830 census, but not enumerated in 1840 which remains unnamed or found.
Another confirmation of particular note was found in researching Civil War records of Cooks and Carpenters, namely Probate records of Dennis’ son Stephen Franklin Carpenter who died intestate while serving in the Civil War. His widow Delilah G Wood Carpenter was ordered to subpoena interested parties of her late husband's estate in order to begin the process of selling real and personal property in order to settle his debts, and the record named “Louisa and her husband William Cook” with others of the same names as all the surviving children of Dennis in Apr 1863. The interested parties named in the Kusciusko Chronical were Adam Carpenter, (Wm) Green Carpenter, Martha E Carpenter, and Martha L Ray, Henry H Ray, and Joseph A J Ray, of Carroll County – and Louisa Cook, and her husband Wm Cook, and Sarah Robinson of Attala County, and children and unknown heirs of Franey Bell, dec’d – wife of Thomas Bell, now residents of the State. I have bookmarked these records to my computer and printed copies, and have attempted to transcribe them as well in MS Word for access.
(Martha E Carpenter was the youngest child of Dennis and Elizabeth Wallace Carpenter, b abt. 1840, and last found documented alive at the time of this writing in the 1863 probate records for her brother Stephen A Carpenter. The Ray children named were offspring of Mary Elizabeth Carpenter Ray, 1826-1855. The Robinson child Sarah was daughter of Melinda Carpenter Robinson, 1825-1849. Brothers Joseph A and Purdom Henry were not mentioned as their Civil War deaths preceded Stephen’s death, and they had also died intestate without issue, so no record of family available. Those named in Stephen's probate entirely lists all the known family of Dennis and Elizabeth Wallace (excepting the unknown daughter b abt. 1827 but dec’d by 1840) as far as can be determined at this time.)
I have yet to locate other documentation of the relationship of Louisa Carpenter, wife of William Henry Carpenter of Eastland County, Texas, as a daughter of Dennis Carpenter identified by Carpenter Cousins as #141908. I would appreciate your conclusion on the reliability of this relationship this or further help if possible. Before this probate record was located, I had independently followed the line of Dennis back to Owen Senior #141916 and further back to Massachusetts Bay Colony Carpenters, immigrants from Amesbury, Wiltshire England, which was separately and independently researched and found to merge with another of my ancestry lines. It all relies on the connection of Louisa to Dennis being accepted as I believe the rest to be thoroughly documented. My only interest is in honoring my fore-bearers by discovering their names and circumstances, but my second cousin from the Wm & Louisa line is very interested in joining the DAR and needs documented lineage. Obviously I anxiously look forward to your response and possible suggestions.
Thanking you for your attention,
Betty Cook Caldwell

Cemetery notes and/or description:
This cemetery was destroyed by Owen Minyard who bought the property and built a barn on top of it.
It is located in Carroll County Mississippi not far from Enon Cemetery.
This was told to Bettie Johnston Bryant by her grandmother A. P. Carpenter Johnston who is buried at Enon Cemetery.

COMMENT:  By Ed Carpenter  pleascyd@gmail.com (June 2021)
He is speculated to have died September 16, 1913 in Franklin County, Arkansas, USA. He married DELANEY MINYARD - 207214 on December 27, 1837 in Carroll County, Mississippi, USA.  She was born about 1817 in Mississippi, USA.
NOTES: For Green Carpenter: His date of death is speculated. If 1913 is the correct date of death he would have been 108 years when he died. A Green shows up in an Arkansas, U.S., Homestead, and Cash Patents, Pre-1908 as follows: Name: Green Carpenter, Land Office: Camden, Document Number: 554, Total Acres: 148.93, Misc. Doc. Number: 6612, Signature: yes, Issue date: April 24, 1890, Statutory Reference: 12 Stat. 392, Act of Treaty: May 20, 186, Land description: 1W1/2NE5TH PM Yes 3S 19W 36; 2 SENW 5TH PM Yes 3S 19W 36. Green would have been 85 when he made the transaction. Could this be another Green?
A Green Carpenter shows up as getting married in the Mississippi, U.S. Compiled Marriage Index, 1776-1935: Name: Green Carpenter, Spouse: Delaney Minyard, Marriage Date: December 27, 1837.
A Green Carpenter shows up in the U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861,1865: Name: Green Carpenter, Side: Confederate, Regiment State: Mississippi, Regiment: 30th Regiment, Mississippi infantry, Company: K, Rank in: Private.
A Green Carpenter shows up in the U.S. Headstones Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1970 shows Name: Green Carpenter, Unit: 30th Miss. Infantry, C.S.A., Enlistment Date: April 30, 1862, Discharge Date: June 6, 186, Death Date: September 16, 1913, Cemetery: Old Union, Cemetery Location: Mount Pleasant, Texas, USA.  I believe the Green dying in 1913 is a different and younger Green Carpenter. It may be William “Green” Carpenter - 167771, son of Nathan- 141898 who was born about 1846 and died September 15, 1913. Or it could be William “Green Carpenter - 206804 born January 15. 1829 and died 1910, son of Dennis - 141908. I believe our Green died in Arkansas at a much earlier date.

His parents are speculated. Need more data. Seen no evidence he is a son of Owen 1765 although his birthdate is the right time that Owen was living in Franklin County Georgia prior to moving to Mississippi. If he was born in Yalobusha County, Mississippi he is probably not the son of Owen 1765. Owen resided in Lawrence and Carroll Counties is far as I can tell.  WARNING: Unless there are two Wiley Carpenters in Yalobusha County, Mississippi something is wrong. Could Wiley be Willie? Short for William? In the 1850 Census, Wiley and his wife Laney W. Caraway Carpenter family did not exist.

WARNING:
Unless there was 2 Wiley Carpenters in Yalobusha County, MS - something is wrong.
Could Wiley be Willie - short for William?  See 1850 issue below.
