-- Green Carpenter, born ca. 1830 in MS, died after 1880.  He married by ca. 1853 to Nancy _?_, who was born ca. 1835 in MS.  He is not yet absolutely proved as a son of William Carpenter, but he is posited here because in 1902 his son Wiley M. Carpenter witnessed an affidavit as a nephew of Derrel Carpenter, placing this Green Carpenter as a brother of Derrel, who was a proved son of William of Owen.  Green Carpenter was enumerated in Clark Co. AR in 1860, in Hot Spring Co. AR in 1870, and in Garland Co. AR in 1880.  He served in the Civil War in the 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry, with Derrell Carpenter, George W. Carpenter, John Carpenter, John W. Carpenter, Stephen H. Carpenter, and William F. M. Carpenter.  Father of: Green H. Carpenter.

John – I should have said Green(e) Carpenter (139168), not GH Carpenter (I was looking at the wrong line!); he married Nancy Jane Moorman on 1/1/1853 in Calhoun, Mississippi.  Greene is listed living with William and Susan in the 1850 census (attached) in Yalobusha County, Mississippi.

His son, William Henry Carpenter (possibly your 139176) was not enumerated with Green in the 1880 census because he was working down the road for his Uncle Darrell/Derrill at the time of the census (see attached 1880 census – near bottom of page).  He shows up as “W.H.” in the 1860 census (attached) in Green’s family, again down the road from Darrell.

William Henry married twice and had two families.  I am descended from the son with his first wife, Ellen Woods (married before 1883), with whom he had 2 children (she died after 1885); his second wife was Fannie Feasel, whom he married in 1888.  They had 5 children.

If you’re interested, I can share trees and more information.  Again, I’m gathering that no direct males from my line have taken part, and since you’re using Y-chromosome testing, it will require some of their participation.  I’ve contacted a descendant of William Henry’s second family to see if they are interested.

MILITARY:  Battle of Franklin 30 Nov 1864
https://www.battlefields.org/learn/civil-war/battles/franklin
After allowing Maj. Gen. John Schofield’s Army of the Ohio to pass him near Spring Hill, Tennessee, the previous morning, Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood led his 30,000-man Army of Tennessee to the outskirts of Franklin on November 30th. Schofield's army had constructed a strong defensive line south of the town. Hood took a position two miles south of Schofield, with open, rolling farm land between them, and prepared to attack.  At 4:00 p.m., over 20,000 Confederates moved forward east and west of the Columbia Pike. Despite delivering a destructive fire, the Federal defenders on the outer line gave way and fell back into their second line closer to Franklin.  Some of the heaviest fighting of the war ensued as Hood's men plowed into the Union position. The Confederates achieved a temproary breakthrough near the Carter House, but the Federals were saved by timely reinforcements. Confederate Gen. Stephen D. Lee's corps reenforced Hood's left, but the Union position held and Hood’s forces were driven back with heavy losses.  The bloody assault cost Hood nearly 7,000 casualties, including six dead Confederate generals.  Schofield withdrew to Nashville where he and Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas's army would engage Hood one last time.

165. Elizabeth "Betsey" Carpenter

NOTE: Per Ed Carpenter
I believe Betsy is a nickname for Elizabeth Carpenter and is a duplicate of Elizabeth. I cannot find any information on a Betsy but there is credible Bio on Elizabeth. She shows up in the 1870 U.S. Census as Elizabeth, age, 11. No Betsy mentioned. She does appear in the 1880 U.S Census as Elizabeth, age, 21  and living with her sister, Mary Carpenter Howell. In the 1900 U.S Census she appears as “Bettie”, age 40 and living with her sister, Mary Carpenter Howell.
