NOTE:
MILITARY UNIT INFORMATION FROM WIKIPEDIA
The 112th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Sixteenth Pennsylvania,[2] is a unit in the Pennsylvania National Guard which can trace its lineage back to before the American Civil War.
...
The regiment was again called to active federal service on 17 February 1941, 10 months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. After years of training, the unit first entered the continent of Europe on the Normandy beaches following the D-Day landing. It became the 112th Infantry Regimental Combat Team which consisted of the 112th Infantry Regiment, the 229th Field Artillery Battalion, the 103rd Engineer Battalion, Company C, 447th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, and Company C, 630th Tank Destroyer Battalion.
28th Division commander James E. Wharton was in his first day of command when a German sniper shot him while he was at the 112th Infantry's command post.[3]
The regiment plowed through France and Germany, participating in the capture of Paris and the bitter fighting in the Huertgen Forest. At one point, after the fight for Kommerscheidt, the regiment was reduced to 300 men.[4] During December 1944, the 112th Infantry Regimental Combat Team was holding a 6-1/2-mile long sector which the Germans attacked with nine divisions. The unit inflicted 1600 casualties and destroyed eighteen tanks during nine days of continuous action, that was later known as the Battle of the Bulge. The regiment was awarded battle streamers marked Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe for its service in World War II. The unit was also awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions during the Battle of the Bulge, from 16 to 24 December 1944. The unit was mustered out of federal service on 6 December 1945 at Camp Gordon, Georgia.

The 112th remained an organic unit of the 28th Infantry Division throughout World War II.[5]

...
Battle plans were soon made and, on 19 January, the 28th went into action on the northwestern section of the pocket in the Kaysersberg Valley supporting the beleaguered 3rd Infantry Division, which had been holding there since late November 1944. Despite the bitterly cold conditions, the Allies prevailed. German intelligence knew nothing about the 10th and 28th presence in their sector until they attacked. The 28th advanced westward [should be eastward] and pressed steadily toward the city of Colmar. In less than 10 days they reduced the pocket by half and the German Führer, Adolf Hitler, who almost always refused to retreat, gave the order in the early morning of 29 January for a partial retreat of his troops in the northern sector of the pocket.

The Colmar Pocket (French: Poche de Colmar; German: Brückenkopf Elsass) was the area held in central Alsace, France, by the German Nineteenth Army from November 1944 to February 1945, against the U.S. 6th Army Group (6th AG) during World War II. It was formed when 6th AG liberated southern and northern Alsace and adjacent eastern Lorraine, but could not clear central Alsace. During Operation Nordwind in December 1944, the 19th Army attacked north out of the Pocket in support of other German forces attacking south from the Saar into northern Alsace. In late January and early February 1945, the French First Army (reinforced by the U.S. XXI Corps) cleared the Pocket of German forces.
...
Having been on the defense to this point in the battle, General Norman Cota's 28th Division was teamed with the French armored combat command CC4 and told to take the city of Colmar.
...
Other units of the 28th Division joined the French in blocking German exit routes from the Vosges Mountains.

Kaysersberg (German: Kaisersberg [ˈkaɪzɐsbɛʁk] (audio speaker iconlisten); Alsatian: Kaiserschbarig) is a historical town in Alsace in northeastern France. The name is German for Emperor's Mountain. The high fortress that dominates the town serves as a reminder of both its strategic importance and its warlike past.
Kaysersberg lies in the canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, which itself is a subdivision of the Colmar-Ribeauvillé arrondissement.
...
Kaysersberg lies about 12 kilometres (7 mi) northwest of Colmar, on the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains.
Kaysersberg lies on the Route des Vins d'Alsace (Alsace "Wine Route"). Kaysersberg is north of Ammerschwihr and south of Riquewihr.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaysersberg
Ammerschwihr (French pronunciation: [aməʁʃviʁ]; German: Ammerschweier) is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France.  ...
Ammerschwihr is a small town located on the Wine Road of Alsace.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammerschwihr

COMMENT:
The Kayserberg Valley follows the present day route D415 through the city of Kayserberg through Ammerschwihr and approaches Colmar from the Northeast. This was the route of the 112th Infantry Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division in January 1945.
On Hitler's order "in the early morning of 29 January for a partial retreat of his troops into the northern sector of the pocket." This "retreat" sent forces into the northeast of Colmar to stop then counter-attack the attacking Allied forces.
The counter attack caused a minor fallback (retreat) of the 112th Infantry Regiment in the afternoon of the 29th.
American forces regrouped then resumed their offensive a few days later.
Based on the data above, IT IS ASSUMED that PFC Delton Carpenter was wounded (Wounded in Action - WIA) then taken as a prisoner of war (P.O.W.) likely on the afternoon of the 29th of January 1945, dring the German counter attack. Sadly he died of his wounds (D.O.W) likely somewhere near Katzenthal toward Ammerschwihr but not in Ammerschwihr which was held by the Americans. A few days later after the American offensive resumed, his body was recovered and identified.
I will list his death as, W.I.A., D.O.W. as P.O.W., near present day, Ammerschwihr, Vallée de Kaysersberg, Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France.
FYI - Based on the DEATH report above, he was not a long term POW but his body was recovered with others on the field of battle and not in a POW camp graveyard. Yes - alot of assumptions made.
