Family's suffering grows

Chris Carpenter
Carpenters' son dies of cancer 3 years after Heather's murder
By Ryan Sabalow

There's an emptiness in Ed Carpenter's voice that is palpable, even over the phone.

An all-encompassing grief wraps around each word like a blanket as the 63-year-old Paradise man describes losing his oldest son to cancer just months after a jury convicted a Keswick man in the 2003 murder of his daughter.

"Sometimes I question God, or if there even is one," Carpenter said.

On Dec. 1, a form of rapidly spreading leukemia killed Ed Carpenter's 38-year-old son, Chris Carpenter.

His unexpected death came just as the family was putting a three-year-old murder behind them -- an ordeal that first left the family hopeful that their strikingly pretty, blond daughter, Heather Carpenter, would be found alive.

After her body was found in a shallow grave, that hope dissolved and the family's focus turned to getting justice.

Eventually, that need was satisfied.

In March, a Shasta County jury found Patrick Larmour guilty of first-degree murder. In April, Larmour was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. The sentence is being appealed.

The 20-year-old had been accused of choking Heather, 22, to death after he met her at a Redding party. He had buried her body four miles from his parents' home.

For about four months, Larmour kept his crime a secret. It was only after he confessed the killing to a friend that police were able to find the girl's remains and make an arrest.

As all of this was going on, Chris Carpenter moved from the Roseville area to near Boise, Idaho, to start a new life and try to distance himself from his grief.

But that didn't stop him from coming back and watching the trial. At one point, he wrote an angry letter to Larmour as the murder suspect sat in jail.

A judge would later meet with Chris Carpenter over the heated letter to see if he would act out on his anger during the trial.

"It was something we all were thinking," Chris Carpenter's 36-year-old sister, Heidi Carpenter, said Tuesday. "He just wrote it down." The outburst was rare for the quiet, usually introverted man, his father said.

When he did express himself, he would do so through music.

While living in Roseville, he was the frontman of "Myme," a band its MySpace tribute page describes as a mix of "Electro/Experimental/Gothic" rock.

Giving to the family

Friends of Heather and Chris Carpenter's family have started a fund to help them as they deal with their grief. Donations to the Carpenter Family Fund can be made at any north state Bank of America.

Ed Carpenter said his son often wrote music that touched on the loss of his birth mother, Joan, who died of cancer when he was 3 1/2.

He also would write songs about his sister, Ed Carpenter said.

Some of those songs will be played at Chris Carpenter's memorial service, scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 30 at the Twin View Church of the Assemblies of God, 621 Twin View Blvd. in Redding.

Although Heather was very much a part of Chris' memories and life, Heidi Carpenter said, her brother had been trying to move on.

Chris Carpenter had been working for a school district in Boise as an information technology specialist.

And he had been dabbling in real estate. She said he bought his own home and had recently purchased a second rental.

Chris Carpenter also tried to get his sister and even his parents, Ed and Cydney Carpenter, to move closer to him, she said.

In September, Heidi Carpenter moved to Idaho and bought a home just a couple blocks away from her brother.

At the end of October, Chris Carpenter complained of being weak and not feeling well. He went to a doctor for tests.

Just days later, the doctors called with the news: leukemia.

The cancer tore through him. Chemotherapy couldn't slow the disease. He was dead within weeks.

Ed Carpenter blames the cancer on the grief and guilt Chris felt over his half-sister's murder. The murder, Ed Carpenter believes, mutated his son's DNA.

His sister says it's possible.

"He's never gotten over it. None of us have," Heidi Carpenter said. "He was heartbroken. He wanted to protect her, to be her big brother."

Ray Foust is an assistant senior chaplain at the Redding Police Department and consoled Chris Carpenter and his family during the ordeal.

He agreed when Patrick Larmour murdered Heather, he also crippled the family. The stress, rage and sadness could have helped kill her older brother, too.

"It's like dropping a rock in a still pond," Foust said. "The ripple effect is just amazing."

Ed Carpenter knows this. He feels that crippling ripple every day.

"This has been the most horrible ..." he pauses, his voice quavering.

"I go around with my hands up in the air, wondering, What did I do wrong?'"

Three years after their daughter s murder, the Carpenter family had hoped to celebrate Christmas again.

But instead the family is coming to grips with another devastating loss, the sudden death of their son, Chris Carpenter.

Chris, 38, succumbed to Leukemia on Dec. 1, but his family believes his sister s death contributed to his sudden illness.

“He had a broken heart,” said his mother, Cydney Carpenter of Paradise. “I really believe that s what killed him. His whole life centered around his little sister.”

Cydney and Ed Carpenter moved to Paradise from Redding after their daughter, Heather Carpenter, was found murdered. When she went missing from a party in 2003 there was a four-month long search for her, until 20-year-old Patrick Larmour confessed to killing her and police were able to find her buried remains.

In March, a jury in Shasta County found Larmour guilty of first-degree murder and in April he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

The ordeal was grueling for the family.

“Sitting in that courtroom for five months was more than any family should go through,” Cydney said.

But they were glad justice had been served and were looking forward to coming together as a family for Christmas, something they hadn t done since Heather went missing.

“We can’t now, there’s no possible way,” Cydney said.

After his sister s death Chris had moved to Idaho to gain a fresh start, Cydney said.

He got a job as an information technology specialist at a school and had purchased his own home.

He was planning to get involved in real estate as well with the purchase of a rental home as well. Chris was also a talented musician who often wrote songs about his sister, she said.

He wanted his family to move near him and in September his sister, Heidi Carpenter, joined him in Idaho.

But in late October he said he felt tired and weak, so he visited the doctor, who called him days later with the news of his cancer. Chris started chemotherapy right away, but it was no use.

Now his family is planning his memorial service, to be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 30 at Twin View Church of the Assemblies of God, 621 Twin View Boulevard in Redding.

The family is also taking comfort in the huge amount of support they have received from friends and family. They are grateful for their other daughter, Heidi, who has experienced breast cancer but thankful is in remission, Cydney.

We’ve had some hard years, but we’ve been blessed with hundreds of friends,” she said. “I know we ll get through this.”

Friends of the Carpenters have set up a fund to help the family. Donations can me made to the Carpenter Family Fun at any north state Bank of America.

Heather did love Christmas, and Christmas Day had to be spent in Eureka, at her grandparents house. There she would be joined by her parents, sister, brother, two aunts and uncles, and her much loved cousins, Danny and Andy Clayton. Heather always passed out the gifts. NEWS:
Parents of slain girl now lose son to cancer
By GREG WELTER |
PUBLISHED: December 23, 2006 at 12:00 a.m. | UPDATED: September 8, 2018 at 12:00 a.m.
PARADISE — Nine months after the killer of their 22-year-old daughter was convicted in a Shasta County courtroom, Paradise residents Ed and Cydney Carpenter are dealing with the death of their son.

Chris Carpenter passed away suddenly Dec. 1 following a short battle with leukemia. He was 38.

A jury determined that Chris”s half-sister, Heather Carpenter, was slain Aug. 4, 2003, by Patrick Larmour, a then-17-year-old high school student from Keswick.

Her body was found near a shallow grave above Keswick Dam shortly before Christmas 2003.

Larmour was sentenced to 25 years to life, following a sensational trial that also found him guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl in 2002.

He was tried as an adult, but because of his age never faced the death penalty.

The Carpenters were pleased with the verdict, but Heather”s older sister, Heidi, 36, said it still didn”t bring closure for the family. “We”ll never heal,” she said.

Moments after the verdict, Ed Carpenter said he”d like a chance to talk to Larmour someday and tell him how much harm he”s done to his family.

The Carpenter siblings were close. Both Heidi and Chris referred to Heather as their “baby sister,” and her mother Cydney said Chris felt particularly protective of her.

“He loved her more than anyone in the world,” she said.

Ed Carpenter told the Redding Record Searchlight he blames the cancer on the anguish his son felt over the murder of his half-sister.

Chris took a job with a school district near Boise, Idaho and moved there from Roseville in 2004, but traveled to support family members throughout Larmour”s trial in Redding earlier this year. In September, just a month before he was diagnosed with leukemia, his sister Heidi moved to Boise from the Bay Area, buying a home only blocks from her brother.

Chris underwent several chemotherapy treatments, which reportedly had little effect.

Heidi Carpenter is herself a five-year survivor of breast cancer. Her mother said she is physically well, but devastated by the death of her brother.

Until 2003, Chris was the frontman for a Roseville-based band called “Myme.”

He wrote several songs with his father, many of which will be played at a memorial service for Chris on Dec. 30. It will take place at 11 a.m. at the Twin View Church of the Assemblies of God, 621 Twin View Boulevard in Redding.

Fund started

Friends of Heather and Chris Carpenter”s family have started a fund to assist them as they deal with their grief. Donations to the Carpenter Family Fund can be made at any north state branch of Bank of America. The funds will be donated, possibly to organizations that assist family members of missing and murdered children.
