his father in 1796 and later sold it to his son William. In 1790 Ezra's dogs helped to keep a bear a bay that had stolen a pig and chased Henry Scovel, a neighbor, up a tree. It gave Henry time to get his gun and kill the bear.

Ezra is certified that he "did militia duty in Fourth Company and
Twentyeth Regiment the 11 of this instant Viz." Ezra was also a member
of the Social Library in 1818 as well as having run a cider mill for
many on his property.  SOUR PAGE Page 504.
CHILDREN: In one record there is two Hannahs listed. However, no evidence given to support this. (JRC)

MIDDLEBURY TOWNSHIP.

By John L. Sexton Jr.

Middlebury township is situated centrally in the county east and west, and a few miles north of the geographical center. It was formed from Delmar and Elkland, in September 1822, and originally contained much of the territory now embraced in the townships of Chatham and Farmington.

The streams in Middlebury Township are Crooked Creek, Norris Brook, Cumberland Creek, Hill's Creek and White's Creek, which all find an outlet in the Tioga River at Tioga Village, by Crooked Creek, Hill's Creek and White's Creek, which all find an outlet in the Tioga River at Tioga Village, by Crooked Creek. The principal stream is Crooked Creek. It rises in the township of Chatham and flows eastward through a narrow but fertile valley until it reaches Middlebury Center; thence northward, receiving the waters of several streams mentioned; and when near Tioga Village it is joined by the Elkhorn, a considerable stream, which rises in Farmington.

The soil is varied, consisting of various grades from the alluvium of the valley to the shales of the mountain summits which are to be found within its limits. In the valleys tobacco is cultivated quite extensively and profitably, while the cereals, grasses and orchard fruits receive the careful attention of the farmer.

There were originally great forests of pine timber, which years ago gave employment to a large number of men engaged in lumbering. The pine timber however is about all gone, and only lumbering in hemlock to a limited extent is now carried on. The people therefore give more attention to farming than in former years. When we say that lumbering is carried on to a limited extent we mean as compared with what was done twenty-five years ago. Bennett & Dimon have a grist-mill and stream saw-mill at Niles Valley; O. B. Lowell & Co. have a steam saw-mill at Niles Valley; G. D. Keeney one at Keeneyville; Walker & Lathrop one at Hammond's; and there is a saw-mill and grist-mill at the mouth of Hill's Creek known as the Mitchell Mill, built originally by Edsall Mitchell, a pioneer. A large tannery is in operation at Niles Valley, and a steam barrel and stave manufactory at Middlebury Center.

THE FIRST TAX PAYERS.

The first assessment was made December 18th 1823,--H. Beebe, William Knox and Elijah Welch County commissioners, David Lindsay clerk, and Thomas Boyes assessor. The following were the taxpayers reported:
...  Abijah Carpenter ... Jedediah Carpenter ...
...
By consulting with a number of the old settlers of the township we have been able to ascertain where a considerable number of the above named taxpayers resided.  ... Abijah Carpenter .. in what is now Chatham township.

John,
Thank you for your fast reply.  I appreciate your help.  My resources
indicate that Abijah (son of Samuel) moved to Richmond, NH (no date given).
If this is true, other information I have could make sense.  Do you have
information about the children of Abijah, son of Abijah, son of Samuel?  The
information I have lists 11 children.  They are as follows:
Myron Dana    1842
Lucinda    1829
James H.    1831
Eliza A.    1833
James M.    1836
George M.    1838
Almyra L.    1840
Oscar Lewis    1845
Clarence M.    1850
Clariees    1853
Ancil    No date listed
All children list Susan Dow as their mother
Again, thanks for your help.  This gives me some new places to look.
Neal.

John,
As I have tried to validate the information I received from two of my aunts
I have discovered some problems.  In one case one Carpenter ancestor would
have been in his seventies when his son was born.  Maybe that is not
impossible but it is unlikely and suspicious.
I am trying to find the parents of Abijah Howard Carpenter born
11/08/1803  in either Rehoboth, MA., Tolland, CT., or somewhere in Vermont.
Can you help me?  Thanks.   Neal.

2967. Lurane or Lauranie Carpenter

Number 1846 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 252.
Possibly a twin to Irene (more likely) or the same person (less likely).

NO! - The above person is female named Lurane.
Was this the "Loren" Carpenter who manufactured bricks upon his farm and sold
to the public per History of Tioga County, PA (1883)?
Also per the same record, Academy Corners Cemetery was on the Loren Carpenter's
farm.

MIDDLEBURY AND FARMINGTON TOWNSHIPS—NELSON, ELKLAND AND OSCEOLA BOROUGHS

RICHARD GOODWIN was born in New Hampshire, in 1760, and came to Tioga County with his family in 1807. He purchased a tract of land in Middlebury Township, a portion of which is owned by his grandsons, George H. and Calvin A. Goodwin. Here he resided and cultivated his farm until old age prevented him from further work. He died December 10, 1858, at the remarkable age of ninety-eight years. He married Lauranie Carpenter, who bore him six children, viz: Benjamin, Calvin, Charles, Lucy, Sally and Susan. The mother died soon after the family came to Tioga County.

Jedediah Carpenter.
...
ELECTIONS ETC.

The first election in Middlebury Township was held at the house of Benjamin Kelsey, March 19th 1824. The officers elected were: Supervisors, Reuben Close, Jacob Hymes; auditors, John Short, John Ives 2nd, Peter Combs, Thomas Keeney; constable, Jebediah Carpenter; overseers of the poor, Asa Short, Jon Ives 2nd. The judges of election were Thomas Keeney and James Maxwell; clerks of election, Peter Combs, Benajah Ives. The elections are now held at Middlebury Station.

Hi John,
...
One last tidbit is while I was online yesterday, I found a picture from a Tioga, Pa. (Joyce Tice's) website of Sarah S Carpenter gravestone, wife of Jedediah Jr. The writing on it states: Sarah S. wife of Jedediah Jr - died June 16 1842 aged 46 years 6 mos 7 d's. she's buried in the Carpenter Burial Grounds on Rte 249 abiur 1/2 mile from Middlebury Center and has only two other unmarked gravestones there. Supposedly some grave were moved to Union Cemetery in Middlebury, but there is no documentation on that.
