3122. Cynthia Carpenter

BUFFALO, SEPTFMBER 23-95.
AMOS B. CARPENTER, ESQ., Dear Sir --Yours of the 4th inst. was
duly received and a few days after I sent you a copy of the
Times of this city which contained a copy I had made of those
things I thought would do you the most good in the way of
calling attention to the matter. I looked the matter up about
which you have made inquiry some thirty years ago but have none
of the data gathered at that time at hand now. I have written to
Montague where I was born, and hope so get something from my
mother that will be of benefit to you. The only obstacle in the
way is her extreme age, she being now past 84.
As to her, she was the daughter of Cynthia, who was the daughter
of Cynthia, (No.2008)whose father died at Montague. He was a
soldier In the revolutionary war; and his children were Cynthia,
Abel, (Troy), Nathaniel, Joseph C., and Eliza.
David (Leyden) was the father of D. N. Carpenter of Greenfield
and died about a quarter of a century ago. He was the father of
C. C. Carpenter in command of the United States Navy at this
time in Chinese waters.
You may not be aware that I have been away from my 'base of
supplies' for more than thirty years. Because of this fact I
Cannot recall individuals, names or dates with the same
exactness as when still upon my native heath. I have therefore
written to my mother who has had two strokes of paralysis since
April, and it is possible that I may be able to get something of
service to you from some observation she might make. I trust
this is so, because it cannot be long before she goes to join
those who have gone before.
Although my name is not Carpenter, I have always been proud of
the strain and name of the family. For they have always been
found in honorable places. So far as my personal observation has
gone, there has never been a black sheep in the flock and it is
my opinion from the jealous care with which they have preserved
the name, that it is worth all the additional honor you can give
and bring to them. The members of this family did not wear
'ready made' clothes; they struck out into an unknown country;
they felled the trees; they reclaimed the soil; they raised the
sheep and sheared them; and their good wives and daughters
carded, wove and spun the cloth that made the garments for a
race of men, who were giants as strong and sturdy as those that
stood in the forests around and about them. They earned their
living 'unawed by force and unbribed by gain.' They have in all
the stormy times that have past and gone been loyal and
representative men. If diamonds have ever shone in their fronts,
they were obtained by the honest labor of their own right hands.
No investigating committee has ever called one of them to a
sudden halt in a mad career of bribery, vice or crime, so far as
I have ever known or heard.
Yours, Mr. Carpenter, has been a long and thankless task. You
have doubtless derived some pleasure and incurred more expense
than most men would, but the satisfaction must always be great,
as you watch the work grow and take form under the magic wand of
your inspiration.  However the end may be, as to your getting
all the data you want, to make it full, perfect and complete,
you will have the consolation of knowing that it will tell the
unborn thousands, of just the kind of timber such men were made.
And your work will be an incentive toward calling from the
descendants of the present generation of Carpenters, a unity of
praise as will cause them to rise up and call their forefathers
blessed.
I regret sincerely that I cannot give you more of the
information that you desire but as stated in the opening of this
letter I may be able to gather from my mother such fragments as
will enable me to recall things that have long since passed from
my memory. You must remember that I was born in 1836 and truer
words were never spoken than that I am not as young as I used to
be. Forty years ago your request would have been answered with
alacrity for then the pride of family and the chances to
investigate were much greater than now, for in these days I am
looking down instead of toward the slope.
I shall go to Montague some time next month and shall take
pleasure in making such inquiries as might lead to something
that will he of service to you. I sent a slip of the Times
article to the Gazette and Courier of Greenfield,,MA. and if
it is published in that section of the country I have no doubt
but that it will be productive of good results. With a
disposition to assist you in every possible way,       I am
yours very truly,
E.R. SAXTEN.
Memorandum - Until I hear from my mother I cannot send you the
name of my great grandfather and great great grandfather. My
grandmother was born in Leyden. Franklin ,,MA., and I
think the year was 1767.
She had the following named brothers:
David settled in Leyden.
Nathaniel and Joseph settled in Maryland, N.Y.
Abel settled in Troy, N.Y.
And I think there were three more, will write after I return
from Montague.

Person Notes
Elijah Kingsley emigrated from Franklin County, Mass., in 1838, located in Mason, and thirty years since purchased his present farm, now conducted by his son C. R., the old gentleman being eigthy-six years of age, and his aged partner seventy-nine, and are, therefore, representatives of a former generation.
(From: History of Cass County, Michigan : with illustrations and biographical sketches of some of its prominent men and pioneers. p 266)
. . . was born on the old Franklin County homestead, October 15, 1796. He was a finished cabinet-maker and learned and practiced his trade in Boston.
Attracted by the opportunities of the West, he started for Michigan May 21, 1839, and traveled by team to Albany, thence by canal and hike to Detroit and soon after reached Mason Township, having been three or four weeks on the water. The year before, he had entered two hundred acres of land, which he now cleared and industriously cultivated. In 1852, he sold his first Michigan farm and located on one hundred and forty acres, which he brought up to a high state of cultivation and where he died, October 29, 1890.
He was one of the original Republicans, but died a firm believer in Democracy. In religious faitha Unitarian, he fraternized with that society in Massachusetts.
He was the father of ten children, eight of whom he reared to mature years. Warren, who is deceased; Mary J. Allen, who
resides in Cold water; Charles R.;Harriet C. Fisk; Arabella A. Reading, now deceased; Charlotte Reading, of Bangor; Mortimer, of Elkhart; and Newcomb E.
(from Portrait and biographical record of Berrien and Cass counties, Michigan. Containing biographical sketches)
Elijah Kingsley. died at his son Charles, north of Elkhart, in Michigan, Wednesday night at 10 o’clock, aged about ninety-four years. He had lived for many years on the farm where he passed away, and had been deaf and nearly blind for a long time, but was quite active on his feet. He himself thought he was a hundred years old.-Goshen Daily News Goshen, Indiana - Nov 1 1890

Joseph W. Carpenter m. Prudence Vandercook 1845 Rensselaer Co. NY
Posted by: Ronald Bachman  (ID *****8470) Date: November 23, 2009 at 05:05:42
Seeking information on Joseph W. Carpenter, who married Prudence Vandercook of Pittstown, Rensselaer County, NY, in 1845. Prudence was born in 1821, so Joseph probably was born about that time. In the census of 1850 they were residing in New York City, both age 28. Would like to identify his parents and learn what became of him. As of 1860, Prudence was residing with a new husband in Wisconsin. Thanks Ron Bachman

John,
Thank you very much for responding to my posting on the Carpenter genforum. I am confident you have identified the husband of my ggg-aunt Prudence Vandercook (b. April 21, 1821, Pittstown, Rensselaer County, NY, d. October 19, 1901, Chicago). She married Joseph W. Carpenter on April 24, 1845, probably in Pittstown, which is not far from Brunswick and Troy. I had suspected she married into one of the many Carpenter families that had been neighbors of the Vandercooks in Pittstown for decades. Apparently I was wrong. I, too, had found the 1850 census record, which showed Joseph's place of birth as MA and was skeptical about the record. But it apparently was correct. Thank you for identifying his parents. Could you tell me the source of that information? Do you have any idea how Prudence Vandercook made his acquaintance? Had he come to the Troy area?
By the census of 1860, Prudence had remarried and was residing in Madison, Wisconsin, near her brothers who had moved there from Pittstown a few years earlier. Her second husband was named George Ford Hastings, who had resided in Washington County, New York, in the township abutting Pittstown, Rensselaer County. My assumption is that Joseph had died, and Prudence came home to Rensselaer County, where she met and married George Hastings, a widower himself. I do not have the date of her marriage to Hastings, but I concluded it was before November 20, 1858, because on that date her brother named a son "George Hastings Vandercook," probably in honor of his new brother-in-law.
Prudence spent her last days with another brother in Chicago. Her remains were returned to Troy for burial, which struck me as a little strange. Could it be she was buried beside her first husband? I have no record showing that Prudence had children. The census of 1900 shows her as a widow, but the spaces for number of children borne and number of children still living were not filled in. That does not necessarily mean there were none, because other entries on the page show the numeral ZERO when there were no children. No children appear in Prudence's household in the 1860 or later census returns.
Can you provide any information on Joseph's family that might help me understand how he met Prudence? She was the youngest child of Michael S. Vandercook and his second wife, Sally Eddy, daughter of Gilbert and Prudence (Avery) Eddy. Could the Carpenters have been related to the Eddy or Avery families?
Thanks again.
Ron Bachman

Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont, USA

Bio:
born 1811 - 1812, depending on source
son of Salmon Root and Eliza (transcript of death record)
Warren served his community at various times as Street Commission, petit juror, and grand juror.

In 1873, Burlington held its Fourth of July Celebration  in Greenmount Cemetery to recognize both the national holiday and  he completion of the Ethan Allen monument which still stands in Greenmount Cemetery. In a speech that day, John N. Pomeroy  stated "It is but just to say that for the original subscriptions and contributions, we are largely indebted to the patriotic exertions of Mr. Warren Root of this city."

A death notice was published in Burlington Weekly Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) on September 25, 1874.
Burlington Daily Sentinel (Burlington, Vermont) September 19, 1874:
"He came here many years ago and opened the Pearl Street House.  He enjoyed a large acquaintance and will be missed by a very large number of friends.  He leaves a widow and two daughters."

The Pearl Street House, an inn and tavern built about 1789 by Eli Barnard, was originally known as the Green Mountain House.   It was on the southwest corner of what is now North Prospect Street and Pearl Street in Burlington.   The original inn burned in 1838, and rebuilt in 1840. The inn closed about 1854.  The site is now the site where the Bisiop DeGosbriand Memorial Hospital (part of  The University of Vermont Medical Center) is now located.

John,
Thanks for the reply. My father did most of the work up until this
point and I'm playing catch-up, trying to independently verify his info.
My grandfather grew up on Powerline Rd just SW of Holley in the house
his father grew up in ("Carpenters' Corners"). My grandfather on up
to David (1818-1899) are at the Hillside Cemetery in Clarendon,
Orleans County, New York. It looks like David's father Solomon went
to Wisconsin, but we don't know what happened to Solomon after that.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyorlean/hllsdc.htm
I have a copy of Thomas G's will mentioning his wife Jane and
children Jonathan, Solomon, Sylvester, Robert, Deborah Knowles,
Susannah Foster, and Cornelia Sweet. Actually, I can only lay my hand
on a transcript at the moment, as I'm not sure where my father saw a
scan/copy of it. But it does mention giving land in Murray, Orleans
Co., NY to a Solomon.
http://stephentowngenealogy.com/research/willabstracts/
I have scans of other documents related to the will, such as notices
and an inventory list.
"I also give and bequeath to my son Solomon Carpenter and his
children, the use and occupancy of a lot of land number thirty two in
the town of Murray and in the county of Orleans and state of New
York. Said lot is bounded on the north by lot number thirty three, on
the east by lot number thirteen, and on the south by lot number
thirty one, and on the west by lot number fifty one containing one
hundred and four 16/100 acres of land."
"Landmarks of Orleans County, New York" by Isaac S. Signor also has
some pertinent info.
https://archive.org/details/landmarksoforlea00sign
p. 386/434 Solomon Carpenter, born in Rensselaer County, NY in
1787, came early to Murray, and took up land joining Holley on the
east. In 1823 he moved to Wisconsin, where he died in 1846. Of his
eight children only David is living.
p. 379/427 The land of Murray was owned jointly by the State of
Connecticut and the Pultney estate, and that belonging to the latter
was not surveyed and put into market until 1821. The Connecticut
lands were sold earlier. No records of articles or contracts with the
early settlers on the Hundred Thousand acre tract are accessible;
hence it is possible to give only a list of the first deeds. The lots
in the town north from the Ridge road, and one tier of lots south of
the same, are numbered from west to east and from north to south.
South from that road, except the one tier, they are numbered from
south to north and from east to west; and the same order in each case
is followed here regardless of chronological arrangement. These lots
were deeded as follows:
p. 381/429 L. 13, Thos. G. Carpenter, 51.27a., May 3, 1822;
Spencer C. Higgins, 51.27a.
L. 14, Thomas G. Carpenter, 97.49a. Feb. 22, 1825
L. 32, ______Carpenter, 104, 16a.
p. 383/431 L. 187, Joshua Garrison, 50.37a. Oct. 1, 1853; David
Carpenter, 50.37a. Oct. 1, 1853
L. 188, D. Carpenter, 20a. Nov. 1, 1855
I'm still looking for more info. My dad mentioned deeds showing the
transfer of the land in Holley down through to my grandfather, but I
don't see the scans in the folder he gave me. They are probably
somewhere in his office. He last worked on genealogy a couple of
years ago so he'll have to dig for them. This is part of one he transcribed:
"...in the town of Murray county of Orleans and state of New York and
being known and distinguished as lot number thirty two (32) in
township number three (3) in the one hundred acre or Connecticut
tract so called being the same farm formerly owned by Thomas G
Carpenter late of Stephentown Rensselaer county and state of New York
deceased in his lifetime and lately in the possession and occupation
of Solomon Carpenter of the town of Murray aforesaid son and heir at
law of the said Thomas G Carpenter the said David Carpenter and Jonah
Carpenter being sons of the said Solomon Carpenter and having
severally interest and estates in the premises above described by
virtue of the last will and testament of the said Thomas G Carpenter
deceased reference being made to said last will and testament and the
said David Carpenter having also an interest and estate in said
premises by virtue of a deed to him by and from the said Solomon
Carpenter bearing date the 12th day of March 1840 and recorded in
Orleans county clerks office in book of deeds number 18 on page 450
and the said George C Smith above named having an interest and estate
in said premises by virtue of a deed from Joel Carpenter bearing date
on the 13th day of March 1845 and also a deed from William Carpenter
and his wife dated on the 8th day of September 1845 the said Joel and
the said William being sons of the said Solomon Carpenter and having
respective interests..."
I know transcriptions aren't good enough. I'll keep digging.

John,
Thanks for the reply.
No records of articles or contracts with the
early settlers on the Hundred Thousand acre tract are accessible;
hence it is possible to give only a list of the first deeds. The lots
in the town north from the Ridge road, and one tier of lots south of
the same, are numbered from west to east and from north to south.
South from that road, except the one tier, they are numbered from
south to north and from east to west; and the same order in each case
is followed here regardless of chronological arrangement. These lots
were deeded as follows:
p. 381/429 L. 13, Thos. G. Carpenter, 51.27a., May 3, 1822;
