Hello, John,
...
Now to the William and William R. question. These were two different men. In the General Index to Surrogates Records from 1813-1915, both are listed, with our William, son of Jeremiah, dead in 1827. William R. dead in 1869. We have a pretty good idea of the children of both men. If one looks at the census records William is living next door to his father in 1810 in Onondaga County; in 1820, he is on the same page and only a few families away from Jeremiah, Sr., his father-in-law, George Cobb, and with two of his brothers, Jeremiah, Jr. and Joseph. George Washington, another brother, is still living with his father. There is no William R. on these pages. In the 1830 census for Wales, Erie, NY, one finds Jeremiah and Joseph, and other Carpenters, but no William. That is because he has died.
Mary Vukman made this comment on her ancestry site: "At Ancestry.com, there is a family tree that includes William R. Carpenter who died 21 Jan 1868 (1869) in Alden, Erie, NY. This tree claims that he was born in RI to James and Anna (Rodman) Carpenter, hence the "R". He married (1) Nancy Burdick who died in 1862 in Hanover MI, he married (2) Lydia Clark, and he married (3) Harriet Saunders. One of their children was John Burdick Carpenter, John "B." On the 1850 census for Hanover, Jackson MI, I found William R Carpenter age 48, born RI, wife Nancy born RI, children including Joseph, Elisa, Caroline age 12 b. NY, and John B. age 4 b. MI. This matches the family in the 1868 will and in the 1865 Alden census."
Hopefully, this will put to rest the William R. as being the son of Jeremiah of Wales, Erie, NY.
More on the family groups later.

Subject: Re: SC Archives for Carpenters

SC (South Carolina) was involved in trade with New England and several New England Carpenters established merchant or mariner outposts in the southern port cities.
The Oliver mentioned in the SC archives was a mariner, possibly ABC #208.
The Richard was a merchant from Rhode Island who traveled throughout the southeast -- you can read more about him in my article "Richard Carpenter, Pioneer Merchant of British West Florida and the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida," in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 72, No. 1 (March 1984), pp. 51-62.  He is ABC #621.
The Dan Carpenter in Camden SC is ABC #1525, pp. 216, 370.  (His brother Timothy #1527 was an itinerant Methodist preacher who settled in Tennessee.)
**** Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter, widow of Phanuel Carpenter ABC #2028, also lived in Camden SC. ****
The Abiah Carpenter may be ABC #719, who is unaccounted for in ABC.  Margaret and husband George Carpenter lived near Abiah and were probably related, but again, not enough evidence to prove anything.  The later Carpenters in the piedmont counties were from PA, VA, and NC lines.  Lots of interesting possibilities in the South!
