Hello John,
I've just been - yet again- having a look at the Carpenter Cousins pages.  I've noticed a couple of errors in the family of my 3x great grandmother, Abigail CARPENTER, her husband, Daniel DEAN, and their offspring.  I'm pretty sure of my facts, as i have information from family documents as well as Quaker records for Abigail and husband Daniel.

I'm giving you my direct line to Abigail, for context:
Me:
Elizabeth Gail Stringer, born 1950, Vancouver, BC, Canada
Marian Lowe, b. 1924, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada
Edward Lowe, b. 1883, Ypsilanti, Michigan
Mary Angeline Davis. b. 1856, Troy, Oakland, Michigan
Phebe Titus Dean  b. 1812, Cornwall, Orange, N.Y.
               * Abigail CARPENTER b. 1776, Newcastle, Westchester, NY
Benedict CARPENTER, B. 1740, Scarsdale, Westchester, NY
Benedict CARPENTER, b. 1717 Musketa Cove, NY
William CARPENTER, B. 1666, Pawtucket, Providence, RI
Joseph CARPENTER  ( R.I.) and Hannah CARPENTER, Rehoboth
William CARPENTER (RI)   and William CARPENTER (Rehoboth)

I'm not sure if this document is still being updated, but just in case, though I would offer these corrections.  Abigail Carpenter and Daniel Dean were married in 1802, in Cornwall, Orange Co, NY.  This marriage is confirmed in Quaker records: Records from “Rochester Monthly Meeting, Monroe County, New York: Quaker Records” related to Dean family, found on Ancestry.com.

Here is what is stated in the Carpenter Cousins:
606. Abigail Carpenter (Benedict , Benedict , William , Joseph , William ) was born on 19 Apr 1776 in , Westchester, NY. She died on 18 Aug 1865.

[Notes]
Abigail married Daniel Dean about 1788/1790 in ,, NY. Daniel was born about 1767 in ,, NY.

They had the following children.

 1440 F i  Elizabeth Dean was born about 1797 in ,, NY.

1441 F ii  Hannah Dean was born about 1799 in ,, NY.

1442 F iii  Mary Cox Dean Dean was born about 1802 in ,, NY.

1443 M iv  Daniel Dean was born about 1805 in ,, NY.

1444 F v  Phebe T. Dean was born on 11 May 1812 in Cornwall, Orange, NY. She died on 21 Mar 1872.[Notes]

Although Phebe Titus Dean's birthdate is correct ( perhaps because I provided this a couple of years ago in correspondence to either you or Gene Z?), the dates of her siblings are incorrect.  As well, Mary's middle name was Chandler, not Cox; Cox was her married surname.

I do have more information on her siblings, which I'm happy to provide if you think it might be a good idea.

I see that Abigail's husband, Daniel Dean has a given "about" birth date.  I've been searching for his birth date, place and parents for 4 years now, and still haven't found any reliable information.  There have been many unsupported, and some clearly incorrect dates/places/parents for him on Ancestry.com, but a little probing either disproved them.  I've even done autosomal testing with 2 companies now, hoping to turn up a Dean cousin.  I've been corresponding with other Dean researchers, and we have some theories, but nothing solid yet.  So every now and then I check the Carpenter pages to see if Daniel has come into focus!

Oh yes - all the above Dean children were born in Cornwall, Orange, NY, according to Quaker records.

Thanks for making all this information public for researchers like me!

I do have the death certificate of Roxse Carpenter and it states her
father was Levi Carpenter and her mother "Mariah".Of course it does
not have "Mariah's" maiden name.I was wondering if "Mariah" could
have been a first marriage and died when Roxse was born and that
Levi then married Fanny Sutton.Any and all help would really be
appreciated.I have also been  told there are many mistakes in the
"Famous" Amos book and some families were mixed up and the errors
continue.I do not have the book but plan to purchase one. Thanks for
your time and patience-----Joyce

Thank you for the quick response and the data that you sent.  I think that we
have a match except I have the mother of Augustus-26308 as Elizabeth or Betsey
(1850 & 1860 federal census) rather than Sally Tompkins-26305.  I wonder if
there were two wives or do I have the wrong Augustus?

Number 272 in the book, The Carpenter Family in America, 1901.
Family on page 162 & 163.  John was a mechanic at Purchase, Westchester county,
NY.  He married a widow.

MYSTERY:
We have a bit of a mystery here.
We have what appears to be a English Carpenter family with a child (Michael) born in Ireland. Michael was about 14 when he came to America in 1844. The only match we have is the 1850 US Census with the family of John Carpenter.  Could Michael have been adopted or taken in and assumed the Carpenter surname?

POSSIBLE MATCHES for this John Carpenter include ...

1) John Carpenter-91018 (b. abt 1785 of Dutchess, NY) son of John Carpenter and Mary Ann Carpenter (both born Carpenters). No spouse or children.
2) John Carpenter-3453 (b. abt 1780 of, Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY) son of Luke Carpenter and Lanah Rhymus
3) John Carpenter-190669 (b. 12 May 1783 NY) son of William David Carpenter and Jane Love. This is an internet genealogy with no documentation. No spouse or children.
4) John Carpenter-26574 (b. abt 1782 NYC, NY, NY) son of Abel Carpenter (b. in Westchester County) and Elizabeth Stillwell. No spouse or children.
5) John Carpenter-25827 (b. 17 Sep 1785 LI, NY) son of Jacob Carpenter and Ruth Bailey. This John Carpenter married a Lettie Burges abt 1803/1805 and had 4 known children.

Ruth Carpenter b. 1813 LI, NY
Abraham Burtish Carpenter b. 1817 LI, NY
Catherine Carpenter b. 1819 LI, NY *
* This one is listed because of the possibility of a daughter Catherine shows in the 1850 and 1855 census records cited below.

Subject: [CARPENTER] Jesse Carpenter of Chemung County, New York
Does anyone on list relate to the following Jesse Carpenter? (I'm beginning to suspect that I may .... or I may not. Sigh.)  Connie

Our County and Its People A History of the Valley and County of Chemung From the Closing Years of the Eighteenth Century, 1892,  by Ausburn Towner
page 507
Jesse Carpenter, Chemung, New York
"In 1804 came Jesse Carpenter, a lineal descendant of William Carpenter who came from Amesbury, Wiltshire, England, with Roger Williams and settled at Providence, R. I., in 1636. Jesse settled on what is now the Jacob Lowman estate half a mile west of Baldwin Creek. He had two sons, Jesse, Jr., and Joseph. The latter never married. The living descendants of Jesse Carpenter, Jr., are Edward S., George e., James, and William S. Edward S. and William s. are well known and prominent residents in the town of Big Flats. George E. is a retired merchant and resides in Elmira. James Carpenter still remains on the old homestead, and the house in which he dwells ocupies a site only a few rods to the west of the spot on which his grandfather erected his primitive abode more that fourscore years ago. His father, Jesse Carpenter, Jr., invented and constructed the first horse-power churn in 1832. The indenture in the ground made for the purpose of erecting this machinery is still to be seen near the present farm-house, although the apparatus itself was discontinued in 1876."

Emma Sayre

Chemung county was created in 1836 from parts of Tioga county, NY.
Tioga county was created in 1791 from part of Montgomery county, NY.

Emma has been noted marrying a Jesse Carpenter.  The Jesse from Orange county or Westchester county, NY?
Current bet is on the one from Westchester county, NY.  JRC 2/2004

Phebe was married and had children with the surname Carpenter. Simple explanation is that Carpenter is her married name. But who was her husband?  Best guess is that Joseph Carpenter was the grandfather, but proof is lacking. More research needed. JRC
